It took a while but Conor McGregor’s return is now basically confirmed.

It was reported by ESPN on Thursday that per UFC president Dana White, the Irishman would headline UFC 246 against Donald Cerrone in a welterweight contest on January 18 in Las Vegas.

McGregor has signed his part of the deal and the parties are just waiting for Cerrone’s side. However, it should be a formality with an official announcement coming soon.

The news naturally went viral as McGregor hasn’t competed since his fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov back at UFC 229 in October last year. The former lightweight champion has spoken of returning to action for a while and recently claimed January 18 would mark his comeback.

But after many weeks with no new developments, uncertainty started to creep in. Luckily in the end, his fight with Cerrone is now going ahead in what will be his first taste of action in 15 months.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to news of the fight announcement:

How did you react to the fight news? And who do you have winning in the main event of UFC 246 on January 18?

UFC middleweight contender Darren Till wants to fight Robert Whittaker in the co-main event of Conor McGregor’s comeback card.

It was reported Thursday by ESPN that McGregor has signed his part of the deal to face Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246 which takes place January 18 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It will be McGregor’s first fight in 15 months with the card likely to be one of the biggest in recent memory. And Till unsurprisingly wants in on all the attention it will get.

“The Gorilla” recently enjoyed a successful middleweight debut against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244 earlier this month. Since then, he has been frequently calling out former middleweight champion Whittaker.

And he made yet another attempt to get a fight happening with “The Reaper” following the McGregor news:

“Surely they need a co-main event ? @robwhittakermma let’s go! #LowTopTing ?” Till wrote on Instagram.

For Whittaker’s part, he was receptive to the idea and called for a showdown in the UFC’s return to London in March. However, not much has moved forward since.

Maybe with the McGregor news, things will start speeding up a bit more.

What do you think of Whittaker vs. Till co-headlining UFC 246?

It is all but official — Conor McGregor will be returning to the Octagon in 2020 to face Donald Cerrone.

The news was confirmed by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto on Thursday as McGregor has signed his part of the deal to face Cerrone. In addition, his representatives add that he has signed a new exclusive deal with the promotion.

The fight will headline UFC 246 which takes place January 18 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. McGregor previously claimed he would be returning to compete on that card.

“Conor has signed and Cowboy is ready to go,” UFC president Dana White told ESPN.

Cerrone has since reacted to the news as well by wishing fans a happy Thanksgiving:

Most interestingly, the fight will take place at welterweight rather than lightweight. McGregor, of course, fought at welterweight twice in 2016 during his bouts with Nate Diaz. Cerrone, on the other hand, recently made the move down from welterweight to lightweight earlier this year.

Regardless, it will be the first time in 15 months that the Irishman will be in action. His last outing was a submission defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 last October.

It will be interesting to see what he plans on doing if he is successful in his comeback.
