Conor McGregor is rumored to be nearing his Octagon return in early 2020.

Despite rumors about McGregor having issues with his coaching staff, the Irishman’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, confirmed to MMA Junkie that he and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh will be in McGregor’s corner.

“Yup, yup, yup – yeah definitely, yeah,” Roddy said.

Initial reports suggest that McGregor could fight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January. During a recent press tour in Russia, McGregor announced his return date is set for January 18, however, the UFC has not officially confirmed this.

McGregor would not confirm who his opponent was, but UFC president Dana White has since admitted that the promotion is working on a fight between McGregor and Cerrone. In regards to a fight between McGregor and “Cowboy,” Roddy offered his take.

“If it is ‘Cowboy,’ it would be an exciting fight, yeah,” Roddy said. “I said this a couple of months ago: ‘Cowboy’ and Conor is a great fight for the fans.

“Two guys that are exciting strikers – although ‘Cowboy’ is phenomenal on the ground, as well, but I think if it was a fight between them, it would be a striking battle, and I think it would be one for the fans, so if it is that, it’ll be an exciting one.”

How do you think a potential fight between McGregor and “Cowboy” plays out?

It’s fair to say that Bellator double champion Patricio Freire isn’t a fan of Conor McGregor.

Tuesday marked the three-year anniversary of UFC 205 where McGregor made history by becoming first-ever two-weight champion in promotional history following his TKO win over Eddie Alvarez.

To celebrate the occasion, the Irishman dubbed November 12 as “World Champ Champ day” and went on to promote it further on his Instagram.

However, another champ champ in Bellator featherweight and lightweight title-holder Freire wasn’t too pleased by the comment as he responded later in the day:

“Says the sh*tty champ champ who didn’t have the balls to defend either title after years of criticizing fighters for not doing so, then made an embarrassment of himself and the sport every day since,” Pitbull wrote on Twitter.

Of course, everything “Pitbull” said is virtually true.

McGregor won the featherweight title in December 2015 before getting stripped of it in November the following year. He won the lightweight title in November 2016 but was stripped in April 2018 with not a single title defense.

And ever since last year, the Irishman has been in the headlines repeatedly for all the wrong reasons.

Hopefully, things come to an end and McGregor becomes an active fighter when he plans to return in January.

What do you think of Freire’s remarks towards McGregor?

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s goal is to never hurt his opponent — however, he did enjoy putting a beating on one particular foe.

Nurmagomedov was recently speaking to schoolchildren in Russia and was asked which victory he was most proud of. Despite getting pleasure from his early wins in his mixed martial arts career, it’s not been the same in recent times for the Dagestan native:

“At the beginning, when you’re just starting out and winning fights, it brings you some sort of pleasure. You enjoy it,” Khabib said (via RT). “Recently I haven’t had that. In the last couple of years I’ve gone out there and won and it doesn’t bring me any real joy to be honest.

“Well, with the exception of one fight, let’s say. In that fight I beat that guy [Conor McGregor] with pleasure, I’ll tell you.”

“The Eagle” received a round of applause following that answer and it’s easy to see why he enjoyed beating McGregor. The Irishman said plenty of ill-advised things about Nurmagomedov, his family as well as his culture in the buildup to their UFC 229 fight last year.

But outside of McGregor, Nurmagomedov never wants to hurt his opponents and even goes easy on them at times:

“I had fights in my career where I understood that I could hurt my opponent more, but I’d talk to him, tell him to give up so that I don’t beat him too hard,” he added. “For example, if I had a painful hold where I could break something, I wouldn’t tighten it all the way, it’d just fix it so that the opponent would tap out.

“Because I have no aim to hurt anyone in this sport. Yes, we compete in a very brutal combat sport, but it’s never my goal to inflict a lot of pain on my opponent. If I understand that I’m winning, I don’t aim to hurt someone bad. Well, except for one fight.”

What do you make of Nurmagomedov’s comments?

Although he acknowledges it is unlikely, Kevin Lee wants to be Conor McGregor’s comeback opponent for January.

Lee got back to winning ways with an emphatic head kick knockout of the formerly unbeaten Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244 earlier this month. It ended a two-fight losing run for the Detroit native. His next opponent seems likely to be Islam Makhachev — with the pair having gone back-and-forth for a while now.

However, one opponent “The Motown Phenom” would really like is McGregor, who is set to return to action on the January 18 card. The problem is Lee is a bad matchup for the Irishman which is why he feels it’ll never happen:

“They’re still trying to find an opponent for Conor McGregor on Jan. 18,” Lee told MMA Fighting. “I know they’re talking about “Cowboy” [Donald Cerrone], but there’s no contract signed there. If he’s a little bit like me, if he’s a competitor at his heart, then he’s going to want to take on the tough wrestler. He should if he wants to get back to Khabib [Nurmagomedov] and really wants to get back into title contention. That fight would make sense.

“It’s not going to happen. I’ll be real. It’s not going to happen. They’re not going to let me within 10 feet of that man, but these are the things that I kind of see. … I think a lot of real fans will see that and know that. I don’t think he’s willing to do what I’ll do. I don’t think he’s willing to take on the guy who’s on the up and up. You’ve got your back up against the wall, and he’s trying to make a name off of you. I think they’re going to avoid those types of fights. I think they’ll avoid me, they’ll avoid [Justin] Gaethje, (and) they’re going to avoid some of these other guys who can really give him a challenge.”

Lee actually has one fight left on his deal and to have it be against McGregor would be a very lucrative option. But again, it’s not up to him, but rather the UFC and McGregor:

“I’ve got one fight left on my contract,” he added. “If that’s the fight, I’ll take it at the money I’m at right now, to be honest with you. I think it would be way bigger than him versus ‘Cowboy.’ But that ain’t for me to say. If they call me, I’m all ears.”
