Former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor had plenty of opportunities to fight Frankie Edgar before according to the latter’s coach Mark Henry.

McGregor recently mentioned in an interview how he would have loved to face Edgar and that “The Answer” was still at the top of his list. Edgar would respond soon after, stating that he’s ready to fight the Irishman in any weight class.

However, according to Henry, McGregor had his fair share of opportunities to fight Edgar, particularly at UFC 189 back in 2015:

He didn’t want to fight Frankie before and he had opportunities too,” Henry told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “It’s like he didn’t want to fight him, he had a couple of chances. [When Jose Aldo was forced out of UFC 189] he knew Mendes wasn’t in a camp, that he was filming a hunting show and he hadn’t trained in a long time. He knows that Frankie trains all year round and it would’ve been perfect timing. Mendes had just lost the fight before to Aldo.

That week, Frankie was ranked ahead of Chad too and they switched it fast after Chad got the fight…Frankie was ranked ahead of him, he had more wins than him. Chad had just lost within two fights prior to the title fight.”

Henry added how McGregor even promised to face Edgar if he defeated Chad Mendes. Edgar knocked Mendes out, but never got to face the then featherweight champion. But still, it’s a fight that Edgar would love even if it happens a couple of years after:

“Frankie would love to fight him, he’s always wanted to fight him; Frankie always wants to fight the best guys,” Henry added. “I think Conor’s that way too. I know Conor didn’t fight Frankie, but he’s taken fights at the last second and he’s not afraid of anything. I give him a lot of credit, so many guys don’t wanna fight when their opponents get hurt.

Look at Frankie, he loses a match and he takes a fight with [Brian] Ortega in two seconds. I believe Conor is the same; Conor is a guy that will fight, so they’re perfect for each other.”

Do you think we’ll see McGregor vs. Edgar?

The chances of Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather rematching each other in boxing competition, or any form of combat sports for that matter, are slim. However, McGregor might get the opportunity to avenge his loss to Mayweather in athletic competition.

Mayweather finished McGregor in the 10th round of their August 2017 boxing contest. Now, according to a report from talkSPORT, McGregor and Mayweather will face off again. This time, it will be in the form of a decathlon of sorts in a revamped version of the famous 1970s BBC TV show “Superstars.”

McGregor has reportedly been offered $10 million to participate in the New Years Eve show in Japan. A source in the report notes, “Conor is on the edge of signing. There is no direct combat involved so it doesn’t breach his UFC contract and he should be fine to take part.”

“Superstars” featured athletes competing in an assortment of challenges against one another; including running, rowing, tennis, basketball, shooting, and swimming. Competitors are awarded points based on their position, with the overall winner being declared the champion.

If this comes to fruition, it will be Mayweather’s second New Years Eve in Japan. Last year, Mayweather participated in an exhibition boxing bout with Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa for $9 million. Mayweather walked through Nasukawa with ease, finishing the Japanese star.

What do you think about McGregor meeting Mayweather in the athletic competition?

Conor McGregor has been the talk of the mixed martial arts (MMA) community as of late.

“The Notorious” caught a ton of heat after a video was leaked from an April incident in which McGregor punched a 50-year-old man inside an Irish pub. McGregor soon did an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani to apologize for the incident and discuss his fighting future. During the interview, McGregor revealed he almost had a fight with Justin Gaethje lined up for MSG in July.

However, that fight fell through after McGregor injured his hand. That was news to Gaethje, who responded to McGregor’s comments during a recent interview with TMZ Sports (H/T MMA Mania):

”That was the first time I heard that,” Gaethje admitted. “I was training for a fight, he broke his hand early. So I think even before it would have gotten to me he broke his hand and it didn’t come together. But yeah, it makes me happy. Cowboy’s number 4 and he’s number 3 so after I get through Cowboy it’s onto the next, and that’s him.

”All he has to do is fart and we all talk about it so he makes the final decision right now, which you have to give him props for. I’m sure he’s not lying, but he did name a lot of names so it looks like he’s trying to get back into the mix of things so I’m happy about that.”

McGregor currently awaits the result of next month’s lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier before making his next move. When asked if he believes a fight with McGregor is still possible in the future, “The Highlight” remained optimistic.

”I feel like I’ll fight him one day,” he said. “Probably after Cowboy. The winner of this fight, so long as it’s impressive. If he’s coming back, it has to be someone like me, like Cowboy. It ain’t gonna be a Tony. It could be the loser of Khabib vs. Poirier, but I doubt he wants to do that. So the next option is the winner of me vs. Cowboy if he wants back into the mix. He’s ranked number 3 right now, that’s crazy to me. But he’s got a lot of power.

”He hasn’t fought in two and a half years, but he just has to fight and we’re talking about it. He brings the most attention, he’s the biggest superstar in this sport, he’s not even fighting and he’s still the biggest superstar. So of course I want to f**k him up. I see him punch an old man, do I want to punch him for that? F**k yeah, I want to f**k that dude up for s**t like that. He looks like a crackhead on your video.”

Who do you think takes a potential fight between Gaethje and McGregor?
