It was a massive day earlier this afternoon (Sat. September 7, 2019) for Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“The Eagle” successfully retained and unified his lightweight title with then-interim champion Dustin Poirier. Khabib dominated the fight for the most part, overcoming a bit of adversity in the second round. After escaping a deep guillotine attempt from Poirier, Nurmagomedov took control on the ground and locked in a rear-naked choke, forcing Poirier to tap out.

Now, Khabib is likely to face Tony Ferguson for his next title defense. However, UFC President Dana White noted, if Ferguson doesn’t accept the fight, a Conor McGregor rematch does make sense. Now, McGregor has offered his reaction to Khabib’s big win in Abu Dhabi. “The Notorious” called for a rematch in Nurmagomedov’s own backyard of Moscow, Russia.

Khabib and McGregor initially fought back in October, where McGregor ended a lengthy layoff to return to the Octagon. Nurmagomedov dominated the fight, submitting the Irishman in the fourth round via neck crank. Now, McGregor is itching to get back to action and hopes to secure an immediate rematch with his Russian foe.

What do you think about a potential rematch between Khabib and McGregor? Who do you think Nurmagomedov will ultimately face next?

Dana White has confirmed Tony Ferguson will be next for Khabib Nurmagomedov, but if he turns it down, a Conor McGregor rematch also makes sense.

Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title for a second time when he submitted Dustin Poirier in the third round of their UFC 242 headliner earlier today. The question then turned to who should face “The Eagle” next.

Ferguson is the obvious choice as he’s on a 12-fight win streak and never lost his interim title in the Octagon. However, there was also a chance McGregor could skip the line because of how big a star he is.

For now, “El Cucuy” seems to be next in line according to the UFC head honcho:

“Yeah, he’s next,” White confirmed at the post-fight press conference. “Tony Ferguson is next in line for the fight, if he accepts the fight. We’ll see how this thing plays out, when Khabib will fight again and if Tony wants to fight.”

Ferguson could have fought Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 if he accepted an interim title fight with Max Holloway and went on to defeat him. However, he had personal issues at the time and was advised against taking that fight.

If something were to happen where Ferguson doesn’t accept a Nurmagomedov fight again, then a McGregor rematch makes sense according to White:

“Tony Ferguson gets the next shot,” he added. “If for whatever reason, Tony Ferguson can’t take the fight [against Nurmagomedov] or doesn’t want the fight at that time, then we would figure out what was next.

But yeah, Conor would make a lot of sense. Conor McGregor wants that fight really badly and I’m sure the fans would want to see it. So we’ll see how this whole thing plays out.”

Who do you want to see Nurmagomedov face next?

UFC president Dana White has revealed that Conor McGregor will not be attending UFC 242 this weekend.

UFC 242 takes place Saturday in Abu Dhabi and will be headlined by a title unification fight between lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier. McGregor, of course, last lost to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 last year and has been campaigning for a rematch.

White also previously teased the possibility of the Irishman showing up at UFC 242, stating that he believed there would be no cultural problems. However, that is no longer the case according to him:

“He won’t be here,” White told ESPN in a recent interview. “I talk to Conor, normally, twice a month. I talked to Conor last night, this morning. No, he won’t be here. But he’ll be watching.”

As for when McGregor could potentially return to action, White is unsure as of now:

“I don’t know,” White added. “I honestly don’t know. It’s all going to depend on his hand [injury] and how fast it recovers.”

If McGregor does return, however, it won’t be against Nurmagomedov or Poirier. That’s because the UFC head honcho says Tony Ferguson will get the next shot:

“Listen, again, If Tony Ferguson’s ready,” White explained. “Tony Ferguson has been offered opportunities before that he hasn’t taken. If Tony’s ready, then yeah.”

What do you make of White’s comments?
