Corey Anderson has endured a rough couple of months.

Anderson last competed in February when he suffered a first-round knockout at the hands of Jan Blachowicz at UFC Rio Rancho.

However, there would be even more struggles afterward as “Overtime” revealed he collapsed face-first on a gravel road after blacking out nearly a week following the event.

As a result, he suffered significant facial injuries with a number of doctors assessing the reason for his collapsing being due to him suffering a major concussion in his knockout defeat in addition to being dehydrated. One doctor even assessed the reason being due to Anderson’s heart stopping. In the end, he was cleared to fight after undergoing a number of tests.

Anderson went on to add that the commission failed to do a proper checkup on him after the fight as he advised his fellow fighters to care of their health in a lengthy Instagram post.

“Its been a long road back.. BUT never the less we are back! Feb 21st following my last fight I blacked out and collapsed smashing my face on a gravel road after scouting some land for hrs. Ended up in the ER for 5 days running numerous of test and blood work to figure out what happened. I seen a long list of different doctors, all but one said it was do to major concussion and lack of water and food after hiking through the woods for hrs. 1 doctor would tell me it was my heart… that my heart had stopped beating and it could happen again but next time in a fight!! Instantly my wifes face change and my emotions as well. I become angry with doctors bc i was scared internally. I would take many trips to NYU hospital meeting several different specialist during many more test and undergoing 2 very painful outpatient heart procedures to find more evidence to go along with that ONE doctors notes He had put a complete halt to my career as a fighter until it was clear my heart was safe to compete. And as of last monday night, I left hospital for the final time after my last procedure, with clearance note in hand, and the doctor telling me “Congrats Mr. Anderson, I can let you go back to beating people up!”

“After my fight the commission/medics failed to do the proper after fight check up and I went back to living life as normal. And I paid a hefty price!! This world wind 5 months have put ALOT of things into perspective and as a veteran fighter who in the past has just fought with reckless abandoned with no care for rest and mental health long as I can keep fighting. I advise you other fighters to look after your health if you took some big shots to your head in a fight or practice, take the proper time to recover. It took me having my son sitting there looking at me in a hospital bed to realize there is real life after fighting and I want to be here to enjoy it. Fight smart, train smart, but recover and rest SMARTER!! Use your head while you still have the brains to do so.”

Johnny Walker

Dynamic Brazillian standout Johnny Walker is confident of working his way back into title contention despite suffering his first UFC defeat against Corey Anderson last time out.

Speaking about his comeback fight agianst Nikita Krylov at UFC Brasilia this weekend to MMA Junkie Walker said. “It’s a very important fight for me. My goal is to resume my journey towards the top of the division. I’m much more focused and prepared this time. Regardless of what Nikita Krylov brings on fight night, I’ll be ready for him. If he wants to bang it out, which is his preference, that’s fine. In the end, I see my hand raised.

“I don’t care if I have
to knock him out or submit him to do it. It’s going to happen in the first
round. My errors won’t be repeated. Each day is a new learning experience. I’ll
use that knowledge in my future fights. I’m striving for perfection.”

The Brazilian is treating his first UFC loss against Corey Anderson as a wake up call after letting issues outside of fighting negatively impact his performance in the octagon.

“That fight was a big learning
experience for me,” Walker said. “My mistake was bringing personal problems
into the octagon. It’s something I’ll never do again. There are some stresses
during fight week – things that had been bothering me for months. I fought
without any focus. I don’t want to take anything away from Corey Anderson, of
course. He’s a great fighter. I’m confident I could have had a much better
performance. I know I’ll keep climbing the rankings, so I expect we’ll run into
each other again. Things will be very different.”

Before his loss to Anderson, Walker was on the verge of earning a shot at champion Jon Jones. Despite defeat he remains confident a title shot is in his not too distant future and he will earn it over the next year.

“I want to keep climbing the
rankings until I’m No. 1. I’m glad to be No. 11 in the (official UFC rankings).
But I’m not about to stop. I’m going to make my country proud.”

“With another win, I might consider moving to Las Vegas, so I can have access to the UFC Performance Institute,” Walker said. “Everything I need is there. Plus, the cost of living isn’t too high. I will work very hard to hopefully get a title shot no later than next year. The entirety of my focus is on this. I know fighting careers are short. So I’m 100 percent dedicated and invested in becoming the best in the sport.”

Will Johnny Walker be able to earn a 205lb title shot in by 2021?

Corey Anderson had his quest for a shot at the 205-pound championship set back last night (Sat. February 15, 2020) in the UFC Rio Rancho main event.

Anderson was knocked out in one round by Jan Blachowicz on a beautiful overhand shot. The loss ended Anderson’s impressive win streak and allowed Blachowicz to call out a cageside UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Now, Blachowicz has made a solid case for the next crack at the 205-pound throne, while Anderson will need to get back to the drawing board.

Hours after the loss, Anderson has taken to his official Instagram page to release a statement. He captioned the post with, “The funk don’t quit!” Here’s what Anderson had to say.

“A great coach once told me “you have 5 minutes to sulk and then it’s on to the next one!” We live and we learn. Back to the drawing board. I appreciate each and every fan and hater! A lose has never stopped me and it ain’t stopping me now. See yall at the top!”

Although Blachowicz’s win was an impressive one, there is still a demand for Dominick Reyes to receive the next shot at the championship. He and Jones fought to a controversial unanimous decision win for the latter, in a fight many believe Reyes should’ve won, but was held back by the questionable Texas judging.

It will be interesting to see what’s next for Jones and the light heavyweight title after Blachowicz’s performance.

Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was in attendance at UFC Rio Rancho last night. The 205lb great was front and centre to watch Jan Blachowicz and Corey Anderson thrown down to earn decide who’s the next top contender.

Jones is fresh off a controversial unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. Many expect the pair to rematch next but ‘Bones’ might have other ideas after seeing a new challange emerge at UFC Rio Rancho.

The 36-year-old Polish fighter Blachowicz propelled himself into title contention in emphatic fashion, picking up a one punch first round knockout win. He then proceeded to call out Jones during his post-fight celebrations.

Speaking to MMA Junkie after the event Jones was quick to praise the new number one contender, he said. “That was an awesome fight. I thought Jan Blachowicz did a hell of a job. His boxing looked great.”

However, the champion was more interested in rubbing salt into the wounds of Anderson, who has relentlessly pursued a fight with Jones for some time.

“Corey seemed slow tonight,” Jones said. “It seemed like something wasn’t clicking in there. He looked slower and more hesitant on his takedowns.”

“Honestly, I think he was more worried about fighting me than fighting Jan Blachowicz,” Jones said. “It showed a valuable lesson of what happens when you look past opponents. I think Corey Anderson tasted humble pie tonight.”

On
the UFC post-fight show he continued to go after Anderson after his loss, speaking
about his rival Jones said. “I was happy to see Corey Anderson eat his words.”

Once all the cameras were gone Jones continued to troll Anderson by posting comments the UFC Rio Rancho headliner had previously made about fighting him to social media.

Should Jon Jones face Dominck Reyes or Jan Blachowicz next?
