Cub Swanson Feels He Would’ve ‘100 Percent’ Gotten Title Shot If Jose Aldo Won

Cub Swanson feels there would’ve been no question that he’s up next for a featherweight title opportunity had Jose Aldo emerged victorious at UFC 212 this past weekend.

Aldo suffered a third round TKO loss to Max Holloway in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Saturday (June 3, 2017) and dropped his undisputed featherweight title to the Hawaiian. It marked only the second loss of “Scarface’s” UFC career, his first being a 13-second knockout loss to Conor McGregor back in December of 2015.

As it currently stands, Cub Swanson is the No. 4-ranked featherweight in the UFC while Frankie Edgar sits at the No. 2-ranked position. There has been much debate as to who will earn the nod to challenge “Blessed” for the title first, but Swanson doesn’t believe this would even be a topic of discussion had Aldo won in Brazil (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“We both knew going in that if Aldo won, I 100 percent was going to get (the next title shot),” he said. “And then if Max won, it was going to be a tossup between the two of us. That’s just because Frankie never fought Holloway.

“The reason I was going to get it over him either way was just because Frankie has fought for the title a bunch of times. And when you fight for the title a bunch of times and you don’t win, it’s hard to sell that.”

Swanson is currently on a four fight win streak, winning all of those bouts via unanimous decision, over names such as Hacran Dias, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Doo Ho Choi, and Artem Lobov. His last loss (interestingly enough) came to the newly-crowned champ Holloway via guillotine choke back in April of 2015.

Edgar is on a two fight win streak after defeating Jeremy Stephens and Yair Rodriguez over a span of six months. “The Answer” has challenged for the featherweight throne twice before, but was unsuccessful both times. Due to the fact that Edgar is 0-4 in his last UFC title fights, however, “Killer Cub” doesn’t think it’s the New Jersey native’s time to challenge for the gold at the moment:

“I’m not taking anything away from him,” Swanson said. “I respect the guy. I think he’s an amazing fighter. He has a win over me. But since then, I’ve been on a tear. And the fact is he’s 0-4 in his last four title fights.

“That fact you can get that many title fights is crazy. I’m just looking for one. I’ve never had the opportunity, and I’ve been promised multiple times and had it taken away. … All I’m asking for is the opportunity.”

Max Holloway became the undisputed UFC featherweight champion this past weekend (June 3, 2017) after knocking out Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 212 from Rio de Janeiro. Now just days removed from his title winning performance, “Blessed” already has a few challengers chomping at the bit to face him, most notably Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson.

Swanson, who was submitted by both Holloway and Edgar in 2014 and 2015, has compiled four consecutive victories and recently campaigned for a title shot that has eluded him throughout his career.

Edgar, however, has won back-to-back fights over Jeremy Stepehens and Yair Rodriguez after losing to Aldo for a second time last summer and feels as if the fight to make is him vs. Holloway:

“The cards fell in my favor, so here we go, let’s set up Holloway vs. Edgar,” Edgar said on a recent appearance on “The MMA Hour.”

Edgar admitted that nothing is official as of yet, although he feels as if there’s ‘no one that makes more sense’ than himself to be the next 145-pound title challenger:

“Not officially, you see everything is trending that way it seems like, but nothing official,” Edgar said. “There’s no one that makes more sense than me and no one that’s done what they’ve done like what I’ve done to get it.”

As far as Swanson, who’s currently ranked No. 4 in the division, goes, Edgar simply doesn’t see how he’s in contention for a title shot:

“I just don’t see how he’s in consideration,” Edgar said. “Since me and Cub fought, I’ve fought nothing but Top 10, Top 5 guys and I don’t think he’s fought anybody in the Top 10 … and he’s also lost to Max. So I don’t see how that’s even a thing to even compare to. Cub’s a great fighter, but this is how it goes and you have to put yourself on the line every time … and I do that.”

Who would you like to see Holloway make the first defense of his title against?

Cub Swanson Feels Frankie Edgar Has Had Too Many Chances at Featherweight Title

Now that Max Holloway is the UFC’s undisputed, featherweight champ, there’s already buzz about how a fight with Frankie Edgar would unfold. But, it’s clear that Cub Swanson isn’t going to sit on the sidelines, and not make a case for why he should battle the champ next.

Holloway unified the 145 titles on Saturday night at UFC 212, by stopping the legendary Jose Aldo in round three. Since Edgar is currently ranked #2 in the division, and because he and Holloway have never scrapped, the consensus seems to be that the former lightweight champ will get a title shot. Holloway holds a submission win over Swanson, which went down in 2015.

Well, during the post-UFC 212 show on FOX Sports 1, Swanson argued that he should be next in line for a title shot. Here is some of what the perennial contender had to say (quote via MMA Junkie):

“The only thing is (Edgar has) had how many title fights? How many chances?” Swanson said. “My whole career – I’ve been with the company 11 years now – I’ve never fought for a title. I’ve been right there. I’ve had it promised. I’ve had it taken away. I think it’s the most exciting fight and it makes the most sense.”

I don’t think I fought very good; he was the better man that night,” Swanson added, while reflecting on his loss to Holloway. “I had a couple injuries in the fight that just made me tank. He beat me up good. I went back to the drawing board. I’ve come back stronger. I’ve proved that. I think I deserve another shot, and I think it’s the most exciting fight you can make right now.”

Now, there’s no doubt that it would be nice to see Swanson fight for the title. After all, the 33 year-old has been in the title shot mix for years, and the only men who have defeated him since 2011 are Holloway and Edgar. There’s also no denying that a rematch with Holloway would likely offer a ton of entertaining action.

But, although Edgar has two losses to Aldo, he is coming off a ridiculously, impressive win over Yair Rodriguez. In addition, since he’s the former lightweight champ, the possibility of him winning a second title is a storyline the UFC can run with. At the end of the day, that storyline could very well win out for Edgar.

What do you think? Should the next title shot at 145 go to Edgar or Swanson?
