Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi put on an epic featherweight clash at last night’s UFC 206 pay-per-view from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in which ‘Killer Cub’ was able to edge out a unanimous decision win over the ‘Korean Superboy’.

Swanson, who has been competing in the UFC’s 145-pound division for five years now, was asked during the post-fight press conference for his thoughts on the now-former featherweight champion Conor McGregor no longer being a part of the division after being stripped of his title; to which Swanson stated that he’s glad ‘The Notorious One’ is no longer associated with 145 pounds:

“No not at all, I’m glad he’s gone,” Swanson said. “Not a fan of the guy. He didn’t want to defend his belt, I don’t think anybody thought he was gonna come back down to 145, it’s obviously a hard cut for him. It was ridiculous, all these guys fighting great fights in the 145-pound division and not having something to shoot for, with a guy that’s not even fighting in our weight-class anymore.

“I think at first people might talk and have negative things to say, but once Aldo and Holloway probably fight and things get cleared up and new guys are coming in, I think it’s gonna be for the better.”

McGregor is currently expected to be out-of-action for ten months to enjoy the birth of his first child, while Swanson is steadily climbing his way back into the title contenders conversation after racking up his third straight win. Some good fights could be awaiting Swanson as fellow featherweights Frankie Edgar and Ricardo Lamas are also coming off of big wins themselves.

Regardless of who Swanson finds himself sharing the Octagon with next, it will certainly be a pivotal bout to shape up the featherweight title picture after the presumable Max Holloway vs. Jose Aldo title unification bout that awaits us.

It was billed as one of the most exciting upcoming fights in the UFC 145-pound division, and last night’s (Sat., December 10, 2016) scintillating slobberknocker between Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi on the main card of UFC 206 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, lived up to that billing and exceeded it by a monumental margin.

In what will most certainly rank as one of the best fights of the year and perhaps of all time, Swanson and Choi threw down in an all-out brawl that saw both men rocked multiple times only to rebound and continue unleashing unbridled offense on their equally strong-willed opponent.

Only heart kept these two warriors fighting on, and it was Swanson who ultimately outlasted “The Korean Superboy” thanks to his pressure and volume striking, but Choi can hardly be considered a loser. Not surprisingly, the fight took home a much-deserved “Fight of the Night” bonus for both men.

UFC 206 went down from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). Fans were treated to a truly unforgettable night of action.

To no one’s surprise, Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi were awarded matching $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their legendary encounter on the pay-per-view main card. While it was officially made Fight of the Night at the post-fight press conference, many are predicting that it stole Fight of the Year honors as well. The two power-punching featherweights bludgeoned each other over fifteen minutes of increasingly dramatic and draw-dropping action. Both men would be rocked during the battle, but both refused to back down, refused to go away. Swanson did just a bit more down the stretch to capture a unanimous verdict from the judges, but the young ‘Korean Superboy’ figures to raise his stock significantly, even in defeat.

Elsewhere in main card action, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone captured one of two Performance of the Night bonuses for his climactic head kick finish of nemesis Matt Brown in the co-headliner. The two welterweights engaged in their own blood-and-guts battle in which each man hit the deck during the first ten minutes. On another night, Cerrone and Brown may have taken home Fight of the Night honors. Cerrone sealed the victory – and his own bonus check – with crushing walk-off head kick knockout a minute into round three. Cerrone has finished four straight opponents since moving up the scales to the welterweight division.

Finally, Lando Vannata banked his own $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus check in the Fight Pass featured prelim. The Jackson-Wink product performed the night’s first walk-off head kick knockout, but this was of the spinning wheel kick variety. His heel met John Makdessi’s chin and separated him from consciousness in the first round of their lightweight tussle. It was the second resounding performance for Vannata in two UFC appearances.

UFC 206 emanated from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). It was an event for the ages.

In the main event, Max Holloway defeated Anthony Pettis via TKO to become the interim featherweight champion, lining up a matchup with Jose Aldo. The two strikers sniped and peppered one another throughout the abbreviated five-round affair. In the end, though, Holloway’s relentless pressure, greater volume, and perhaps Pettis’ compromised gas tank led to a victory for the Hawaiian.

The co-main event featured welterweight action fighters Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Matt ‘The Immortal’ Brown duking it out for just over two rounds. Both men were dropped inside the first ten mintues in a back-and-forth battle. ‘Cowboy’ brought the proceedings to a close about a minute into the third round when he landed a head kick flush to Brown’s jaw, dropping him where he stood. No follow-up punches were necessary. The win marked Cerrone’s fourth straight victory – and fourth straight finish – since moving to welterweight earlier this year.

But the unquestioned fight of the night – and a serious contender for Fight of the Year – came from two other featherweights on the main card in Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi. The two engaged in a slobberknocker of epic proportions, each finding the mark multiple times with seeming fight-ending blows. Despite each being badly hurt at various points, neither man would give an inch. They banged it out until the very end, with Swanson doing just a bit more down the stretch to take a unanimous decision. The violence gods were satisfied.

Following a streak of failed opportunities when Georges St-Pierre couldn’t headline and Daniel Cormier was then forced out of the main event slot, UFC 206 was still able to deliver one of the most exciting cards of the year this evening (Sat., December 10, 2016) from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

In the main, surging featherweight Max Holloway scored his tenth straight victory over former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, battering the star with a relentless onslaught of punches to secure the interim featherweight championship and a future date with champion Jose Aldo. In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone knocked out Matt Brown with a massive head kick in the third round of an exciting back-and-forth brawl, and featherweights Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi threw down in what could easily go down as Fight of the Year.

Cub Swanson: Conor McGregor Made Featherweight Ridiculous

The winner of tonight’s (Dec. 10, 2016) UFC 206 main event between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis will likely go on to meet Jose Aldo, who was recently promoted to undisputed 145-pound champion after the UFC stripped McGregor of his title. The Irishman, who now also holds the promotion’s lightweight strap, hadn’t defended the 145-pound title since winning it last December.

Some have had mixed feelings on the situation, but fellow featherweight contender Cub Swanson, who will also fight tonight, couldn’t be happier:

“I think a lot of people look at it like, oh man, this division sucks now, but I couldn’t be happier,” Cub Swanson said at the Ultimate Media Day on Thursday (Via MMAFighting). “I think what he was doing to the division was ridiculous. I thought the way it was handled was stupid. There’s only one belt, and you hold it hostage for so long. We had a champion in [Jose] Aldo who has been dominant, and amazing, but he hardly fought.

“So if we’re lucky enough to get a fight with him, your next chance would be so far down the road. And then Conor comes in, wins, [you think] okay, this is exciting…and then he fights one time, and leaves the division for two different weight classes.”

At the end of the day, Swanson feels as if what McGregor was doing simply wasn’t fair to the rest of the division:

“It just wasn’t fair to anybody else in the division,” he said. “It was like, why are we fighting? What is our end goal? We have nothing. So it was just, you know, you can look at it in different ways, but honestly, in my opinion, it was ridiculous. I’m glad to see our division rolling again, and I think you’re going to see exciting fights that people will appreciate.”

Do you agree with Swanson’s comments?
