Curtis Blaydes Questions Ngannou’s Mental State Heading Into Rematch

Curtis Blaydes thinks former title challenger Francis Ngannou is in a ‘dark place’ heading into their main event rematch at UFC Beijing. Curtis Blaydes thinks former title challenger Francis Ngannou is in a ‘dark place’ heading into their main event rematch at UFC Beijing.

Blaydes will get his chance at redemption as Ngannou defeated “Razor” via second-round TKO (via doctor stoppage) in April 2016. That remains the only loss on Blaydes’ record.

Their first meeting, however, served as a bit of a launching point for both fighters. “The Predator” went on a run that took him straight to a title shot. As for Blaydes, he is still peaking and has won five straight since losing to Ngannou.

Blaydes said he always thought he and Ngannou would cross paths again. It just made too much sense to “Razor.”

“I wouldn’t say it kept me up at night, but I knew it would happen eventually,” Blaydes told reporters, including LowkickMMA, during a recent media scrum. “It was inevitable. I knew he’d be around, I’d be around. The UFC likes natural stories like this. We already have a natural storyline. It’s not fake. We had a fight, he won, but I didn’t get to finish it. So I do have a bit of redemption I want to get.”

Blaydes will headline UFC Fight Night 141 takes place Nov. 24 at Cadillac Arena in Beijing. The event will stream entirely on UFC Fight Pass.

When asked about Ngannou’s mental state after his last two losses, Blaydes doesn’t see how the Cameroonian can be in a good place. However, he still sees Ngannou as a dangerous opponent.

“He’s probably in a hole right now,” Blaydes said. “0-2 after being the hotshot? That’s got to be a dark, dark place. I want him to be his best, I don’t want any excuses out of his camp or the fans or the company. I want him at his best. I’ll beat him 10 out of 10 times.”

If Blaydes beats Ngannou he would seem like the next logical title challenger in the heavyweight division. He launched a social media campaign in an effort to fight for the belt after his last victory.

The UFC instead offered up a former foe for Blaydes. Although it’s far from what he wanted, a chance at redemption is a nice consolation. And either way, the first loss doesn’t get to him due to its result.

“It is a loss,” Blaydes said. “On my record, it’s a loss, but any loss that you don’t lose any sleep over is that one. It wasn’t the referee’s decision, it wasn’t the judge’s decision, it was the doctor.”

Alistair Overeem Ponders Retirement

All good things must come to an end.

Alistair Overeem has been competing in combat sports for over two decades. Many of those years were spent at the highest level, competing in promotions like Strikeforce, Dream, and K-1. “The Reem” would earn championships in each of those organizations.

More recently, Overeem has fallen on harder times. He was brutally knocked out by Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes in his last two fights.

Given Overeem’s recent setbacks fans have begun to call for “The Reem” to hang em’ up. Although he hears the fans concerns, Overeem still believes he can make one more run at UFC gold.

“I’m 38 years old, and that’s important to note,” Alistair Overeem told ESPN. “I fully realize the end of my career is coming. It’s just coming. You can’t fight forever. I’ve had a beautiful career. Twenty-one years … crazy. Twenty-one years of fighting.”

“The end is coming, but I can still do this right now. And I can still go all in.”

“We’re not there yet, but I could see myself in one or two years, three maximum, walking away with a big smile on my face. I feel very content. I love the sport. My life is designed and dedicated to the sport. It’s been one gigantic, beautiful adventure — and I’m enjoying it still.”

Overeem decided to change things up after his last loss. He now calls Elevation MMA home after departing from his longtime team at JacksonWink MMA. Overeem explained he would’ve changed camps sooner had he not been training for Elevation heavyweight Blaydes.

“I’ve noticed some things were missing [in my previous training camps],” Overeem said. “I started to look around at different camps, and I had plans to train in Denver. When the Curtis fight was booked, I put that to the side and trained with what I had at the time. The results weren’t good, and that was a wakeup call for me.”

“I had seen Curtis early this year, and we were talking about me coming to the gym. After our fight happened, I sent him a message, and he said I should still come out. I like the vibe of the gym and the city. I still feel, clearly, as if I can make that next jump.”

Quote: Brock Lesnar Has No Chance Against Daniel Cormier

Brock Lesnar’s heavyweight title shot seems to be an unpopular decision.

Fighters aren’t happy with Brock Lesnar right now.

This summer it was announced that “The Beast” will challenge Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight title next year. Before that can happen, however, he’ll need to deliver six months of clean United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) drug tests.

In his last bout against Mark Hunt a few years ago at UFC 200, Lesnar tested positive for a banned substance. He subsequently retired from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, freezing his suspension.

Once Lesnar’s suspension is served, he will be eligible to fight Cormier. One man who has felt disrespected by this decision is Curtis Blaydes. The No. 3-ranked heavyweight told Submission Radio he feels disrespected by the UFC allowing Lesnar to jump him in line:

“I still feel disrespected that Brock Lesnar gets to jump in out of the blue. He’s not even ranked. He’s not even officially on the roster and he gets to have a title fight scheduled and he hasn’t proven himself. So yeah, that’s what makes me feel disrespected.”

Blaydes confirmed he has yet to speak to the UFC on the matter. He realizes that the promotion is interested in money fights at the moment, and Lesnar vs. Cormier is exactly that:

“No. But I mean, it’s obvious. We’re all adults. They want money. I get it. They want money. I’m not money yet, so it is what it is.”

When asked to give his thoughts on the match-up, Blaydes said he isn’t giving Lesnar any chance at defeating “DC”:

“No. None whatsoever. I don’t even view Brock as a legitimate MMA fighter. He was juiced to the gills when he fought in the early to mid-2000’s. So I don’t respect juice heads.”
