LowKickMMA will be bringing you UFC Fight Night: Eye vs. Calvillo results throughout tonight (Sat. 13th June, 2020) from the UFC Apex, Las Vegas.

In the main event of the evening, we will see a matchup between #1 ranked women’s Flyweight contender Jessica Eye and former women’s strawweight #10 Cynthia Calvillo. Maying the shift in weight, Calvillo will attempt to scale the Women’s Flyweight rankings by getting a win over the former title challenger Jessica Eye. Fighting to keep her position in the rankings and find another shot at the title, Eye has faced some early adversity just barely missing the weight limit forcing her to give some of her pay to Calvillo. In the co-main event, we will see a rebooked matchup between Karl Roberson and Marvin Vettori. The two had some animosity during there stay at the fighter hotel for UFC Jacksonville after Roberson was forced to withdraw from the scheduled bout due to becoming ill after his weight cut. Vettori, eager to get a fight was immediately looking for a new opponent. The two would be scheduled to face off again on tonight’s event with Roberson missing weight and having to share some of his pay with Vettori.

In tonight’s UFC main event Jessica Eye faces off against Cynthia Calvillo. Eye is hoping to make it two wins in a row since her devastating KO loss to Valentina Shevchenko. Calvillo will be making her flyweight debut after moving up from strawweight. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: I have to give the edge to Jessica Eye in this fight. On paper, it seems pretty even in terms of skill but Eye is much bigger than her opponent. The former flyweight title challenger seems destined for a step up in weight after back-to-back weight misses, whereas Cynthia Calvillo is making her flyweight debut after stepping up. She will be the smaller fighter tonight and may struggle to impose her will on Eye who should dictate the fight.

Prediction: Jessica Eye

Abhinav Kini: I’m going to have to give the edge to Cynthia Calvillo on this one. While this could easily end up going the distance and resulting in a split or close decision verdict with either fighter winning, I just think Calvillo is the better overall martial artist who may even pull off a submission win. Jessica Eye also missed weight and while that can be an advantage for most, I think she also did more harm to her body given how she looked at the weigh-ins.

Prediction: Cynthia Calvillo

Ryan Galloway: In the main event of this weekend’s card, we will see the Cynthia Calvillo move up in weight to take on former title challenger Jessica Eye. This is a pretty simple matchup in my opinion. For Calvillo to get the win she is going to need to get it to the ground and find a submission. On the feet I believe Eye is the better striker and she is also the bigger girl. Her reach is going to allow her to keep distance and control the fight. I’m taking Eye to get the win by decision.

Prediction: Jessica Eye

Ryan Maccarthy: I have Cynthia Cavillo taking this by decision. I think she uses her wrestling background to her advantage to neutralize Eye. The pressure will be too much.

Prediction: Cynthia Calvillo

Featherweight contender Jessica Eye is set to welcome Cynthia Calvillo to the division on June 13. Surprisingly, the fight will serve as the main event for the card that is set to take place in Las Vegas Nevada. The UFC officially announced the full card for next weeks event yesterday while confirming Eye vs. Calvillo would serve as the main event. However, it has been common knowledge that the featherweight fight would top the bill for some time.

Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Eye admitted she was surprised to get the call to compete in the main event but more than happy to accept the offer as it’s a dream come true for her and would be for many fighters.

“The call came through. I was taking a nap,” Eye said. “I woke up from my nap, we talked it over and we decided to do it. It’s a great opportunity regardless of who the opponent is. To fight on a UFC main event is a dream coming true for a lot of fighters so regardless of the situation if it’s on ESPN+, ESPN, or even a pay-per-view I’m taking the opportunity for myself because I want it.”

While Eye is understandably delighted to be the main attraction next week the honour hasn’t come without some drawbacks, namely fans criticizing her fight as not main event worthy. The former featherweight title challenger isn’t too worried about the “meaningless” critics whose opinions really don’t matter, she explained.

“Who’s criticism matters? It clearly doesn’t matter because the fight is already made. The best fight league in the world made us the main event. If five losers that don’t respect us or respect the sport just because it’s not what they want, they have an opinion but it doesn’t really matter to me – they’re meaningless. They mean nothing to me and I’m sure they mean nothing to her (Cynthia Calvillo) and they truly mean nothing to the UFC or they wouldn’t make the fight to begin with.”
