Dan Hooker: Islam Can’t Be Compared To Khabib ‘He’s Been Knocked Out’

Dan Hooker is finding it hard to buy into the hype surrounding Islam Makhachev who many believe is the next Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Dagestani fighter improved his record to 20-1 this past weekend and looked impressive doing so at UFC Vegas 31. Makhachev dominated Thiago Moises through four rounds before becoming the first man to stop the Brazilian submission specialist.

Hooker had said ahead of UFC Vegas 31 that he was interested in fighting Makhachev next but Khabib’s protégé didn’t seem to keen due to the New Zealander’s recent dip in form.

‘The Hangman’ didn’t take the comments from Makhachev too seriously.

“Oh, it’s just funny. Like, I don’t really care. I don’t really take it too seriously,” Hooker told Submission Radio. “Like, it’s just a bunch of banter to me. But if you dish it out, you better be able to take it. So, his reason [for not fighting me is] that I’m like three losses in my last six fights. And then in the same breath he calls out Tony Ferguson who’s lost three in a row. So, that makes about as much sense as shitting in a swimming pool. So, I don’t know what he’s on about.”

Makhachev has one blip on his impressive record. The 29-year-old was knocked out in his second UFC fight which came against Adriano Martins in 2015.

That one blemish is what is stopping Hooker from buying into the hype surrounding Makhachev who is being pushed as the heir to Khabib’s lightweight throne.

“You see scrolling past and seeing on like build-up videos of him saying everyone’s scared, everyone’s scared to fight him, oh, the whole division’s shook. Bro, you’re just copying your mate’s homework. Give your mate’s homework back and come up with something for yourself, son,” Hooker said.

“He’s on a good streak at the moment, but I believe he’s been knocked out in the UFC before. So then him copying Khabib’s homework and saying all this wild stuff when you’ve been laid flat in the octagon, it doesn’t really have the same ring to it as an undefeated fighter.”

Do you agree with Dan Hooker? Does Islam Makhachev’s knockout loss make it harder to buy into his hype?

Top lightweight contender Dan Hooker is officially calling out of Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson, particularly for UFC 266 in September.

UFC 266 is set to take place on September 25 and will see a main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz and No. 1 contender Glover Teixeira. Also being targeted for this event is UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega. Hooker, a longtime teammate of Volkanovski at City Kickboxing, has long been calling wanting a fight with the Diaz bro. He is now also turning his attention to another brawler and fellow lightweight contender, Tony Ferguson

Speaking to Farah Hannoun of MMAjunkie.com, Hooker explained why Diaz and Ferguson are at the top of his list for potential fights.

“Definitely, that fight (against Diaz) has my interest. I had just seen the video of him saying he wants to get back in there in three or four months, and if you want to fight put your hand up, and that’s something I’m quite well known for – is putting my hands up for fights and taking opportunities and not staying silent in moments like that. I’m not afraid to ask for things that I want. I just see a good fight. I just feel I’ll bring the kind of fight that would do a Diaz brother justice, and it works in the timeline,” Hooker explained about Diaz, before turning his attention to Ferguson.

“That’s just a fight that gets me excited, and that’s what the fans want to see,” Hooker said of Ferguson. “They want to see you in fights that you’re excited to be in. That Tony Ferguson-Dan Hooker fight, I feel like that’s a bloodbath. I feel like that’s an absolute war, and that’s a fight that definitely gets me up and gets me excited – so it’s on my list.”

Either matchup for Hooker would be set for fireworks and a likely fight of the night contender and would be a great addition to a stacked card for September.

Do you think we see either of these matchups go down in September? How do you see them playing out?
