There is no question about it for City Kickboxing head coach Eugene Bareman — Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker deserve more money. There is no question about it for City Kickboxing head coach Eugene Bareman — Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker deserve more money.
Both fighters took part in a back-and-forth war in the UFC Vegas 4 headliner this past weekend that saw Poirier come out on top with the unanimous decision victory.
For his efforts, “The Diamond” took home $300,000 while Hooker came away with $110,000. Both fighters also earned an additional $50,000 after earning Fight of the Night honors.
Poirier’s coach Mike Brown recently claimed Poirier should be earning million dollar paydays for his fights, especially given the amount damage he has been taking in them. It’s something fans agree with as well amid the recent fighter pay disputes some are currently having with the UFC.
UFC Fighters Need To Be Paid More
And for Bareman, there isn’t one person who can disagree that UFC fighters need to be paid more — even the people in charge.
“Who’s gonna look at that fight and say that those guys don’t deserve more money? Like, there’s not a person on earth, and that includes the people in charge of the UFC,” Bareman told Submission Radio. “If they look at that fight and think that those guys get paid enough to leave that much of their life in the cage, then they’re insane. Of course they deserve more money. In Vegas, the amount of money you get paid gets published after the fight. So, it’s out there, it’s on record for everybody to see. And after a fight like that, like, you’ve damaged yourself for life. That’s a fact. Like, there’s more and more studies coming out now, and there will be more conclusive studies in the future, that when you inflict that sort of damage on each other, you’re causing permanent injury. And no amount of money can pay for that.
“But, you gotta remember that this is a sport that we choose to do, and we, definitely most fighters feel, and most of the public out there feel that the fighters should be rewarded more for that level of commitment to each other and to the fans and to the company. I think everybody, I think most fighters are… just, the general consciousness is right. And that is, that the fighters need a greater revenue share of what the company makes. And you can’t, you can’t argue with that.”
Of course, when the question of fighter pay is posed to UFC president Dana White, his rebuttal is he is still paying his fighters their full purses unlike other leagues despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
What he fails to address, however, is the fact that the UFC can afford to do so because they were never paying enough to begin with.
“I’ve see in the media, well, mainly Dana actually, talk about that the NFL and the MLB and the NHL, they’re all trying to cut the fighters salaries in half and stuff, but he’s saying that he’s not doing it. Well, they’re getting 50 percent revenue share with their company,” Bareman added. “You can cut their salary in half when they’re getting 50 percent. Our guys over here are getting $10,000 and $10,000. In the NFL and stuff, the guys collecting the helmet and the towels in the changing room, they’re getting paid more than our guys (laughs).
“Think about it. They’re probably on the average salary. Are they getting 10 and 10 for picking up the helmets and towels and dirty sweatshirts? They’re probably getting paid more than what some of the fighters getting paid, given that obviously the fighters fight more than once, but you understand the ridiculousness of it. I think more the question is, what are the fighters asking for? Is it like, out of this world? Is it too farfetched to grant them that? And the consensus amongst the fighters and stuff, is that it’s not. Just share a bigger slice of the pie is all they really want.”

Paul Felder is not retired. However, he is benching himself at the moment.
Felder’s fighting future has been uncertain ever since he hinted at retirement following his split decision loss to Dan Hooker back in February.
Although he would have a change of heart later on, last month, “The Irish Dragon” reflected on some of the injuries he had sustained in his mixed martial arts career as he detailed why he loved his gig as a commentator.
But as has been the case, it looks like Felder has changed his mind once again as he appears to be leaning towards fighting.
“I’m benching myself for a second,” Felder told MMA Junkie. “I think that’s the way I would really consider it. I just needed a little break, man. That fight in New Zealand was a tough one. I pour my soul into these fight camps, man. I really don’t hold back. It’s not like I casually take a fight because I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, I think I can beat that guy. How many weeks do we have?’ I really try to make sure I check all the boxes. I did that for that one.
“It was so close, and your heart gets broken with a decision. It’s not like I’m crying about it. I just needed time. That was a lot. I was gone for a long time. … I just wanted to be home for a little bit.”
Felder Wants Fight That Motivates Him
However, Felder needs a fight that truly motivates him if he is to return to the Octagon.
After UFC Vegas 4 this past weekend, a fight with either Hooker or Poirier certainly counts. As does a fight with former interim champion Tony Ferguson.
“Look at those guys on Saturday night: Hooker and Poirier. Those guys are going to be hurting for a while,” Felder said. “This is a savage sport. If your head is not quite in it, I’m not going to rush back to get into the cage unless it’s something super exciting.
“… That is what would bring me back – a rematch with Dan. Now, it’d just be, ‘Let’s just run it back.’ Listen, I’ve never really sat and whined and complained about the decision. But it was close enough where you could warrant a rematch between us. … So, yeah, (Hooker), Tony Ferguson, Dustin (Poirier). The chances of Conor are probably zero, so I won’t even mention that. That’s just not going to happen. So, yeah, those are the fights that I want.”

Dan Hooker is determined to get straight back to fighting top lightweight contenders after suffering a unanimous decision loss against Dustin Poirier at UFC on ESPN 12 this past weekend. Hooker and Poirier threw down for five rounds in one of the best fights 2020 has had to offer. Ultimately ‘The Diamond’ began to dominate the bout in the later rounds and the judges scored the fight unanimously in his favour.
Speaking to Submission Radio post-fight Hooker expressed his belief that the only two logical opponents for his next fight are Charles Oliveira and Tony Ferguson, he said.
“They shuffled the rankings around a little bit. Felder dropped below Oliveira, and Dustin moved above Tony. So, it’s interesting times. So, obviously the two fights that make the most sense is Dustin verses Tony, and then me verses Oliveira. Those two fights make the most sense, right? But then, yeah, if Dustin wants to sit the rest of the year out and Tony wants to fight, well then I’m the next logical fight for Tony. So, I want to get back in there before the end of the year for sure. One hundred percent I’m gonna fight again before this year closes out. And if Tony wants to get back in there, then I think that fight makes a lot of sense, if I’m being honest.”
Hooker admits Ferguson is his preferred next opponent and believes he’ll be successful in his second shot at a top-five fighter in as many fights, he said.
“That’s best-case scenario for me, obviously is fighting Tony Ferguson. That’s number three, and I get another crack at number three. My first crack at number six was Barboza, and that went like shit. And then my second crack t number six was Al Iaquinta, and then I whooped him. So, I think I do better on my second time around the roundabout.”
The New Zealander also has a message for potential opponent Oliveira who he believes is getting carried away with recent call-outs of Poirier and Conor Mcgregor.
“I’ve got my eyes on who I want to fight next, and I think it’s either gonna be Tony or it’s gonna be Oliveira, and I think either one of those fights is another main event,” Hooker said. “But then, Oliveira, he’s getting carried away calling out Poirier and calling out Conor, and he’s beating around the bush, trying to say anyone expect me or Tony. He’s a funny guy. But yeah, I’ll have to wait and see, because obviously Tony makes way more sense for me. But if I have to go back and then solidify my place in the top five, I’m happy to do that. I just want to fight and I want to fight before the end of the year, and either of those two names makes sense for me.”
