Ige: Give Me Eight Weeks For Barboza Rematch

Dan Ige is willing to give Edson Barboza a rematch.

Barboza made his featherweight debut last week at UFC Florida when he took on Ige in a three-round fight. Both fighters had their moments, but many observers felt Barboza had done enough to come away with the decision victory.

In the end, two of the three judges saw it differently as Ige earned the split decision verdict to make it six wins in a row. The Brazilian, on the other hand, has now lost three in a row, with his last two being highly-debatable decision losses.

Barboza was naturally not happy. He claimed he won the fight and has even asked for the UFC to make things right by awarding him his win bonus. While Ige feels sorry for him, he also feels it’s wrong for the veteran to just state that he won the fight.

That said, he is willing to throw down with Barboza again.

“It’s kind of sad, you know, I feel kind of bad for him,” Ige told TMZ (via BJ Penn). “But I kind of think he’s doing the wrong thing to say, ‘I won this fight, I won the fight, I won the fight.’ You know, it is what it is man, it sucks, you know, sometimes we lose in the sport. But clearly he has to go back and watch the fight because I hit the dude with 95 right hands. I won rounds two and three. That’s it. He hurt me, yes he did hurt with me a body shot, the last 30 seconds of round two. But that doesn’t win you the round.

“I just feel kind of bad for him. That guy’s a legend, that guy’s been around, he’s been in the top-10, top-5 of the world for the last 10 years. I understand how bad he wants to win, but you know what, the guy for how much he’s saying he won the fight, not one person from his team has asked for a rematch. Hey, I’ll give him a rematch dude, I beat him on two weeks’ notice. Give me eight weeks and I’ll see what I can do to him.”

Would you like to see an Ige vs. Barboza rematch? Does it go differently?

Edson Barboza Wants Win Bonus For Dan Ige Loss, Ready To Fight In July

Edson Barboza clearly believes he won his featherweight debut.

Barboza dropped down to 145 to take on Dan Ige on the main card of UFC Florida this past weekend. The Brazilian enjoyed a promising overall debut as he dropped and dominated Ige in the first round and ended the second round with effective ground and pound.

Ige convincingly won the third round and although he did have overall control in the second round, many felt Barboza landed the more significant strikes and should have come away with the victory.

Of course, that wasn’t the case as Ige would win a split decision putting Barboza on a three-fight losing streak with his last two losses now being highly-debatable verdicts. To make matters worse, Barboza can’t even appeal the decision as that would require accusing Ige of fraud or using illegal substances.

Barboza Ready To Fight Anyone, Anywhere, Any Time

One way things can be made better according to him is if he gets his win bonus. The former lightweight contender also stated that he’s ready to compete in July.

“Hey @danawhite @seanshelby the whole word knows that I won that fight! Send me the win bonus and the contract for July, anyone, anywhere, anytime. I will be ready.”

It remains to be seen if Barboza will be given his win bonus.

Although it’s something that has happened in the past when fighters have lost fights they clearly won, this particular contest was still close. And given the amount of poor judging these last few events, Dana White may have to end up shelling out more than one win bonus.

Not that he can’t afford it though.

What do you think of Barboza asking for his win bonus?

Featherweight contender
Dan Ige picked up the biggest win of his career this weekend at UFC 247. The
28-year-old beat Mirsad Bektic by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) after
three hard fought and highly contested rounds.

This win makes it five in a row for Ige who holds a record of 13-2. He is now keen to push on to bigger and better things. Competing in the 145lb division he’s definitely not short of potential opponents. Despite insisting he’s not one for post-fight call outs, Ige did have someone in mind when speaking to MMA Fighting at UFC 247, he said.

“To be honest it’s
whatever the UFC gives me. At this point, that’s five in a row – that’s tough
to do in this division. I’m in deep water because I’m swimming with sharks. But
I am a shark and I can hang with in there with anybody.”

“I’m not the call out type but I’ve been fighting all these guys and I feel like I go in there and take their soul. I want to fight a guy. I was joking saying let’s make a fight with ‘Korean Zombie’ I don’t think that dude has a soul. That’d be a tough fight. I’d like to test his will.”

You’ve got to respect the man for calling for a shot against one of the most dangerous fighters in the division. However, it’s highly unlikely to be his next fight. ‘Korean Zombie’ is currently ranked #4 and on the verge of a title shot. In contrast despite being on an impressive winning run Ige, is yet to be ranked. So, whilst it would be a really fun fight on paper, fans of both men can hang fire on this one – at least for now.

Who should UFC featherweight
Dan Ige fight next?
