Dana White declares Power Slap will be 'Bigger than the UFC' in just a few years: 'Remember I said that'

Dana White believes Power Slap will be bigger than the UFC.

Seriously…

After another lucrative night of seeing people slap the sh*t out of each other, the UFC CEO once again touted his maligned pet project as the next big thing in combat sports. Whether or not Power Slap is a legitimate sport varies depending on who you’re talking to, but whatever it is, White believes it’ll be even bigger than the $12 billion promotion he helped build with the Fertittas and a few others.

“I said this will be the biggest sport in the world,” White said during the Power Slap 8 post-fight press conference. “This will be bigger than the UFC. This will be bigger than the UFC. Now you can remember I said that. I’ll see you in a few years and we’ll talk again.”

Paige VanZant makes a memorable power slap debut

White may be a bit overzealous in his comments, but you can’t deny that Power Slap 8 was a banner event for the promotion, namely due to the debut of UFC and BKFC veteran Paige VanZant.

After testing out her skills inside the Octagon, the squared circle, and the boxing ring, ’12 Gauge’ stepped up to the podium inside Fontainebleau Las Vegas and scored her first win in more than five years, dominating South African standout Christine ‘The Edge’ Wolmarans en route to a decisive unanimous decision victory.

During the contest, ‘PVZ’ knocked down her opponent twice while Wolmarans failed to offer anything substantial in return. You can check out all the highlights from VanZant’s Power Slap debut right here.

“Honestly, it was absolutely incredible,” VanZant said in a post-match interview with Charly Arnolt. “Of course, I wanted to knock her out with the first slap, but I’m so happy that it went the way that it did. I knew I could take a punch, I knew I could take a slap. That was really fun.”

Dana White offers bleak update on Conor McGregor's return to the Octagon: 'None of the above'

If you planned on seeing Conor McGregor return to the Octagon at some point over the next few months, I’m afraid we’ve got some bad news.

McGregor’s quote-unquote “greatest comeback in combat sports history” feels like a phrase that was coined a century ago. In reality, it’s only been about a year, but it seems like there’s a new piece of information to report on an almost daily basis.

Sometimes it’s McGregor himself announcing when and where he’ll return. Other times, it’s UFC CEO Dana White completely contradicting whatever ‘Mystic Mac’ said the week before.

Today, we’ve got the latter.

After withdrawing from his main event slot at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler due to a broken pinky toe, McGregor revealed in an interview with Severe MMA that a return in August or September would be optimal.

Like clockwork, White debunked everything the former two-division titleholder just said, telling Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports that McGregor’s return won’t be happening anytime this summer, nor is it on the docket for Fall 2024.

“None of the above,” White said when asked about McGregor’s comeback in August, September, or October.

And just like that, we’re back to the drawing board.

Dana White is staying tight-lipped about all things conor mcGregor

To be fair, Dana White was pretty tight-lipped about McGregor’s original return date of June 29, even after the Irishman and his opponent had already broken the news to the rest of the world.

“I don’t know right now. Our schedule is laid out. We’ll see,” White said at the UFC Saudi Arabia post-fight press conference when asked about McGregor’s next fight. “I’m not doing anything until I know that Conor is healthy. It’s not even worth talking about. What about September? What about October? He’s not ready. So why even talk about that?”

Instead of seeing McGregor vs. Chandler on Saturday night, fight fans will be treated to a light heavyweight champion rematch as Alex Pereira puts his 205-pound title on the line against Jiri Prochazka in the UFC 303 main event at T-Mobile Arena.

The fight will serve as a rematch of their November 2023 clash in Madison Square Garden. There, ‘Poatan’ secured a second-round KO of Prochazka to take the vacant light heavyweight title back home to Brazil. He’ll look to go two-up on the Czech as the pair of prolific knockout artists close out this year’s International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

Dana White unsure Conor McGregor can fight his year after UFC 303 injury our schedule is laid out

Despite revealing plans to compete as soon as August amid his exit from next weekend’s UFC 303 card during International Fight Week, Conor McGregor’s plans to come back this year may have already been quashed by Dana White, who confirmed the promotion’s schedule for the annum is already in effect.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight gold holder, was forced to withdraw from next weekend’s scheduled welterweight fight with Michael Chandler, revealing he suffered a fractured toe just three weeks before the bout in Las Vegas.

And appearing at Bellator Champions Series 3 tonight in his native Dublin, former duel-weight champion, McGregor revealed he was already working toward a “new date” for his comeback.

“You know, I’m still here rocking away,” Conor McGregor said. “I had a little lapse of concentration and I had to reschedule the bout, so I’m a little upset about that. But it’s keeping me dialed in, it’s keeping me focused. I can’t rock around like I’m out there showing up, like I’m out there doing my job. The job is not done, so that’s not bad for someone like me.”

“I’m onwards towards the new date, and take my lessons learned, it was a lapse in concentration,” Conor McGregor continued. If I was any of these other little bums that can’t move, that have no footwork they don’t rely on their skills… then I would be ok. And I’ve done it before, I’ve made the walk on a multitude of times under those circumstances and given these byums an advantage over me that they don’t even deserve.”

Dana White unsure if Conor McGregor can fight this year

However, speaking with assembled media following UFC Saudi Arabia tonight, the aforenoted, White claimed that the schedule for the remainder of 2024 was already planned, calling into question whether McGregor could compete as soon as he desired.

“I don’t know right now,” Dana White said. “Yeah, our [the UFC’s] schedule is laid out so, we’ll see. I’m not doing anything until I know that Conor (McGregor) is healthy. It’s not even worth talking about until – you know, ‘What about September, what about October?’ He’s not ready so why even talk about that?”

Do you think Conor McGregor can compete this year in the UFC?

Paige VanZant is headed to Power Slap!

During the UFC Saudi Arabia broadcast on Saturday, CEO Dana White revealed that ’12 Gauge’ would be making her Power Slap debut at the Power Slap 8 event on June 28 against South Africa’s Christine Wolmarans.

It’s just the latest in a series of combat sports endeavors for the UFC fighter turned BKFC brawler. After seven years of competing inside the Octagon, going 5-4 in the process, ’12 Gauge’ signed a lucrative deal with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.

Unfortunately, ‘PVZ’ failed to live up to the hype, losing back-to-back bouts against Britain Hart and Rachael Ostovich inside the squared circle.

Paige VanZant makes power slap debut on the heels of her first pro boxing boxing

In May, she made her pro boxing debut, challenging Elle Brooke for the Misfits Boxing middleweight title. Though she didn’t lose, she didn’t take home the gold either as the judges scored the fight a split draw. VanZant is expected to rematch Brooke later this year.

But not before she tests out her open-handed slapping skills as a part of Dana White’s latest pet project.

Though Paige VanZant has struggled to find the win column in recent years, her toughness and durability are undeniable. In 16 career fights, she’s never been KO’d—a stat that could serve her well in this new venture.

Impossible for Ronda Rousey to grow as fighter during UFC career Dana White

UFC CEO Dana White says it was impossible for Ronda Rousey to grow as a fighter while she was competing in the promotion.

Rousey was the first-ever woman the UFC signed and was the inaugural UFC bantamweight champion. She became a massive star in and outside of combat sports as she was finishing she fought quickly.

However, White says that ended up hindering her, as he says Rousey couldn’t grow as a fighter which ultimately led to her downfall.

Ronda Rousey reveals original plan to beat Holly Holm before KO I was out on my feet from the beginning

“What happened with Ronda was — Ronda was very unique in that she came in and put this thing on the world stage,” White explained on The Club Shay Shay podcast. “This thing being women fighting. She put it on the world stage at a level that nobody else could have done it. While she was doing what she was doing, building the sport and the UFC and women, all these other women were training to beat her. She had taken so much on her shoulders at the time, it was literally impossible for her to keep growing as a fighter during that period.”

After starting her career out 12-0 she lost her title to Holly Holm by KO in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. She then returned a year later but suffered a 48-second knockout loss to Amanda Nunes and never fought again.

Dana White Says Ronda Rousey Did ‘Everything She Set Out To Do’

Even though Dana White says Ronda Rousey couldn’t grow in the UFC, the UFC CEO says she still was incredible for the promotion.

Rousey is still one of the top women fighters ever as she had defended the UFC title six times. With that, White says Rousey accomplished everything she wanted.

“I was sad that I wouldn’t work with her on a daily basis like we did but I felt like the timing was right,” White said about Rousey’s exit from the UFC. “She had done everything she set out to do. Not just for her and her career but what she did for women in fighting in general.”
