Love Her or Hate Her, Ronda Rousey Shattered the Ultimate Glass Ceiling

“How was your New Year’s Eve party?”

“Pretty good.”

“That’s good, did you have fun?”

“I did, yeah.”

“That’s good too. Did you like everyone there?”

“No, the host is the worst.”

“Oh, yeah that’s unfortunate. Why are they the worst?”

“He’s a loudmouth who believes his own hype and isn’t shy about pulling rank or big-timing people.”

“Oh man, that’s a bummer. Nobody likes a loudmouth who believes their own hype and isn’t shy about pulling rank or big-timing people.”

“Right?”

“For sure. Too bad too, because without him the whole party doesn’t even happen and you wouldn’t have had a good time at all, even if his irritating qualities might have rubbed you the wrong way a few times throughout the night.”

Imagine for a moment, if you will, that you just had this conversation or one reasonably close to it with the guy in the cubicle next to you. He had fun on New Year’s but didn’t like the person hosting because said host was a little bit arrogant, a little bit full of himself and could be utterly grating sometimes.

Still though, that host was the only reason your coworker had a party to go to, and he had enough fun that maybe it’s not the most appropriate thing for him to complain about.

That situation is very much an analogy for where MMA sits today as a result of Ronda Rousey. People don’t have to like the way she carries herself, her attitude or the general hoopla that’s accompanied her for the past few years, but without her this whole “women in the UFC” party we’re all having so much fun at wouldn’t have happened.

Yet following her most recent setback at the hands of Amanda Nunes at UFC 207—the second such thrashing she’s taken in as many fights—it became vogue to opine, for better or worse, on Rousey.

Lebron James and Kobe Bryant came to her defense. Still others chose to get their digs in.

She was the hottest topic in the sport and one of the hottest in sports, once again, as she has been so many times in the past.

It’s all suggestive of something obvious, something that went without saying before Holly Holm exposed the myth, but that has receded to the shadows in the time since: Like it or not, Rousey broke the ultimate glass ceiling.

Consider these universal, categorical, undeniable truths about her run since 2012:

  1. She was openly noted as being the sole reason Dana White changed his stance on women in the UFC.
  2. She was the first ever UFC women’s bantamweight champion, but also the first in any form whatsoever.
  3. She defended her title six times, good for fifth all time in UFC history.
  4. Only one of those defenses lasted more than a round, and four were over in 1:06 or less.

That’s a sterling resume by any metric.

And yes, there are holes one can poke in her run if they want, but aside from the notion that the division was developing while she was on top and that made for a wide competitive gap between her and most challengers, most are of little merit.

She fought Miesha Tate, who beat Holm in Holm’s first title defense, and beat her on two occasions.

She finished fellow Olympian Sara McMann, jiu-jitsu black belt Alexis Davis and elite contender Cat Zingano in succession and stopped all three in seconds.

She once fought on a 56-day turnaround, a UFC record for shortest duration between title defenses that’s sure to hold up for a while.

She nearly became a million-seller pay-per-view draw in the blow-off of her feud with Bethe Correia, then broke that barrier in the loss against Holm and may do it again with the Nunes fight.

She’s mentioned ahead of every name in the company save for Conor McGregor in terms of starpower, and many would tell you she’s a bigger mainstream star than the Irishman thanks to time spent schmoozing with names like Ellen and Conan.

That’s the resume and reputation of a pioneer. It’s the resume and reputation of an icon, a person who grabbed on to what guys did to push the sport forward in the public conscience before her and push it forward that much further.

Sure, nobody is wildly fond of a person who can’t decide if they want to tell everyone what they think about everything or if they want to hide in a bunker until it’s time to hit the scales, but the objective criteria of that person’s impact remain unimpeachable either way. All the FTAs in the world don’t change that.

In the case of Rousey, it’s not relevant whether she talks or doesn’t talk, promotes or doesn’t promote or even wins or doesn’t win—it’s about the impact she’s already made on the sport. Sure, a person’s character counts. And if you think Rousey has serious character flaws, so be it. But don’t use that as a distraction to take away from what she accomplished.

If Rousey never throws another punch, never talks another word of trash, never shows her face in public again, the fact remains: Ronda Rousey did break through the ultimate glass ceiling and her legacy, for all its complexity, should be respected as such.

For quite some time now Invicta FC featherweight champ Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino has been campaigning for the UFC to implement a female 145-pound division, and UFC President Dana White finally budged.

Sadly Justino could not make-weight in time to participate in the inaugural championship bout, and the match-up was made between former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie to collide for the historical feat. It was later revealed that ‘Cyborg’ failed an out-of-competition United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) test, and much speculation arose as to why she couldn’t make the 145-pound weight limit.

Dana White recently participated in a media scrum in Las Vegas this past weekend (Friday December 30, 2016) for the UFC 207 pay-per-view (PPV) event, courtesy of MMA Junkie, stated that deciding to make the female featherweight division has subsequently blown up in his face:

“Obviously, the plans that I had for 145 were just all – they didn’t go the way I thought it was going to go,” White said. “Both those girls wanted to fight Cyborg, right? And stylistically, they’re both great matchups for Cyborg. I actually like both of those fights. Germaine and Holly are both great fights for Cyborg.

“Cyborg got her 145-pound title in her division and that all blew up on me.”

While Justino’s first two UFC victories came at the catchweight of 140 pounds, White revealed that ‘Cyborg’ claimed she was open to cutting to 135 pounds to compete in the women’s bantamweight division when negotiation with former UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta:

“If you were in the discussions when she came on board,” White said, “she was 100 percent into cutting down to 135. And she met with Lorenzo (Fertitta) – her and Lorenzo met and they had conversations and her plan was to get to 135. Obviously, that’s the money division.

“Even at 145 pounds, it’s not really the money division. But maybe she could have turned it into something. But that was never the original plan.”

Although the plan was to build the featherweight division around ‘Cyborg’, White is till excited about the upcoming battle between Holm and Germaine, and will see how the division stacks up from here on out:

“Listen, Holly and Germaine will be a good fight,” White said. “It’s a good fight. I don’t know, I’ve got to see – the wheels are already in motion, so I’ve just got to see how this thing plays out and go from there.”

“That was never the plan, to do (women’s featherweight) either, but now we’re in,” White said. “We’ll see how that one goes, who knows, maybe one of these two will win the belt and we’ll find a contender. I don’t know, we’ll see how this whole thing plays out.”

What do you think will be the repercussions of ‘Cyborg’ most likely not being able to compete in the UFC’s new featherweight division? Will the division be able to survive?

Aside from being one of his biggest stars of all time, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is also very good friends with promotion President Dana White, who took the time to console Rousey after her devastating loss to Amanda Nunes this past Friday (December 30, 2016).

White recently told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne his emotional interaction with Rousey backstage at the T-Mobile Arena, in which he stated he hugged ‘Rowdy’ for almost an hour:

“I must have tears, blood and boogers all over my f—ing jacket. I went in there and hugged her for 45 minutes,” White said. “I told her, ‘I love you so much, and whatever you want to do next, I got your back. You built this. This doesn’t exist without you. You’re the best decision I ever made.’”

Rousey suffered a 48 second knockout loss to Amanda Nunes in the main event of the UFC 207 pay-per-view (PPV) last weekend, marking the second consecutive loss of her professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career. After having suffered yet another crushing defeat, and given the way she handled the first one to Holm, Rousey’s future inside the Octagon is now in a state of uncertainty.

If the Glendale Fight Club product does decide to return to fighting action, however, what match-ups are left for ‘Rowdy’ to pursue?

With UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor appearing to be taking a break after winning the title at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 from New York, No. 1-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov and No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson have expressed interest in fighting each other. In fact, the idea of pairing the two against each other with an interim title on the line has even been tossed around.

Despite the bout obviously making sense from a rankings standpoint, it has yet to be made mainly due to the fact that Ferguson is in contract disputes with the promotion. ‘El Cucuy” has said that he would like to be paid the same as Nurmagomedov, a request that UFC President Dana White doesn’t seem to fond of.

“The Eagle”, on the other hand, simply wants the fight signed and he recently offered to pay Ferguson to make the fight happen:

Nurmagomedov currently boasts an incredible 24-0 professional record and is coming off of a dominant decision victory over Michael Johnson. “The Eagle” is also riding an eight fight UFC win streak.

Ferguson, on the other hand, has been red hot as of late, compiling nine straight victories inside the Octagon. “El Cucuy” is coming off of a decision victory over former champion Rafael dos Anjos.

What do you make of Nurmagomedov’s offer and would you like to see this fight?

A few days ago, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) released a teaser for the new season of ‘Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight.’ Today, the first episode of the new season was uploaded on the UFC’s official YouTube channel. Former UFC fighters Din Thomas and Matt Serra once again join Dana White on the road to finding the stars of tomorrow.

Season one saw a couple of unforgettable moments including the crew’s discovery of Sage Northcutt and Mickey Gall grabbing a microphone and calling out CM Punk. Northcutt and Gall not only made the UFC roster, but they even competed against each other last month.

Gall’s UFC debut only lasted 45 seconds as the 24-year old submitted Mike Jackson. The win earned Gall a bout with Punk at UFC 203. The Miller Brothers MMA fighter finished Punk in the first round.

When Northcutt debuted, he had a ton of hype behind him. “Super” was just a 19-year old who looked like a model. He earned a UFC contract after his appearance on “Lookin’ for a Fight.” Northcutt pummeled Francisco Trevino in 57 seconds. He then submitted Cody Pfister in the second round.

Northcutt was heavily criticized for his performance against Bryan Barberena. He tapped due to an arm triangle choke from half guard. Many fans and even fellow fighters believed the choke wasn’t tight enough and “Super” had simply given up. Northcutt moved back down to lightweight to defeat Enrique Marin at UFC 200.

Gall and Northcutt went toe-to-toe at UFC on FOX: VanZant vs. Waterson. Northcutt was able to open up a cut on Gall in the opening round. Disaster struck for “Super” in the second stanza when he was dropped and Gall took his back. The New Jersey fighter finished the bout with a rear-naked choke.

It’ll be interesting to see who can make a name for themselves on season two of “Lookin’ for a fight.”
