Conor McGregor and Tyson Fury were absolutely shocked to witness Daniel Dubois sleep Anthony Joshua cold Saturday night (Sept. 21, 2024). The Wembley Arena in London, England, exploded with a shocking uproar, and McGregor and Fury can be seen in a video with disbelief in their eyes.

The hype surrounding the event was palpable despite the fact that the super fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk was not on the card. An attendance record was set at the Wembley Arena that night, with 96,000 fans lining the stands. Some big stars came to see the fireworks as well, and they were not to be disappointed.

Many believed it would be a gritty fight, but Joshua would walk away as the victor. In fact, the betting lines supported that view as well, with Dubois being a moderate underdog with odds that fluctuated around +360.

Daniel Dubois shocks Conor McGregor, Tyson Fury, and the entire world

Daniel Dubois looked sharp and was unafraid of his opponent on Saturday night. He lived up to his nickname of ‘Dynamite’, and fans worldwide could tell Anthony Joshua struggled to withstand the pure power behind Dubois’ shots.

Early clips from the night captured Conor McGregor freaking out on the sidelines as Joshua was battered by his opponent.

Dubois landed a few knockdowns in the early rounds and looked to be having his way with Joshua. Then, in the fifth, it was time for the kill. Joshua landed a few good shots and had Dubois backed up into the corner of the ring. Joshua came forward and threw a single overhand right that landed but didn’t do significant damage. Dubois fired back with a right hook that also landed clean but didn’t do any real damage. Then, the moment of truth.

Joshua had allowed his hands to drop in the fray, and his head was wide open. Even worse, he began to wind up and telegraph an uppercut. Dubois simply just put everything he had into an overhand right, and it landed with stunning authority. Joshua was sent to the canvas, almost lifeless, and the arena erupted.

In what has to go down as one of the most one-sided and jaw-dropping upsets in recent professional boxing history, Daniel Dubois retained the IBF heavyweight championship with a fifth-round knockout of Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in London.

Dubois became just the second man to knock out Joshua — and only the third to beat him — in his professional career. The defending champion put on a display that was flat-out dominant and one of the most brutal beatings Joshua received in the ring.

“Dynamite” brought this pace right from the get-go, rocking the former two-time unified heavyweight champion in the first round and dropping him before the frame’s conclusion.

The pace did not stop, and Dubois appeared three steps ahead of Joshua. In fact, he rocked “AJ” again in the closing seconds of the third round, knocking him down before the bell sounded.

Dubois knocked Joshua down again in the fourth stanza, and he appeared to do so for a second time before it was ultimately ruled a slip.

Things ultimately ended in the fifth, just as Joshua finally seemed to buckle Dubois with a right hand, putting him on the back foot. The fan favorite charged in an attempt to attack but was cracked and dropped by a counter right hook that landed on the button.

Joshua was unable to answer the 10 count, giving Dubois the win and ensuring the championship wouldn’t change hands.

Daniel Dubois Puts On Beating, Retains IBF Heavyweight Title With KO Of Anthony Joshua

Dubois has now won three straight since his unsuccessful challenge of Oleksandr Usyk in August 2023. He became interim IBF heavyweight champion with a finish of Filip Hrgovi? in June and was promoted to full-time champion when Usyk — then-undisputed heavyweight champion — was stripped of the IBF title.

Meanwhile, this loss snaps a four-fight win streak that Joshua was on since dropping back-to-back WBA/IBF/WBO heavyweight championship decisions to Usyk.

Joshua had previously held the IBF title from his win over Charles Martin in April 2016 (and going on to pick up the WBA and WBO titles in the process) until his infamous June 1, 2019 loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. Joshua regained the titles in a rematch with Ruiz that December.

Israel Adesanya bets on Anthony Joshua

Though he came up short in back-to-back bouts against Oleksandr Usyk, Joshua remains one of the division’s biggest names. Much of that has to do with his penchant for highlight-reel knockouts, like the one he handed former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in February.

Israel Adesanya bets on Anthony Joshua

The Watford, England native has bagged four straight victories since his last loss to Usyk, but a win over Dubois would undoubtedly be his biggest victory yet, assuming he can pull it off.

Adesanya drops 10k on Anthony Joshua to get the job done

One man who’s more than confident that Joshua will come out on top is two-time UFC middleweight titleholder Israel Adesanya who placed a $10,000 bet on ‘AJ’ to score a finish somewhere between the 10th and 12th rounds. If Joshua gets the job done, ‘The Last Stylebender’ will be 50k richer.

“This fight got beef…grab the @Stake sauce,” Adesanya wrote on X.

Anthony Joshua feeling blessed to be back in the boxing spotlight

He’ll look to extend that streak to five and become a world titleholder for the third time in his illustrious career. But beyond that, Joshua aims to bring the once-celebrated division out of the dark ages and make it the sport’s premiere weight class

“It can happen in a variety of ways,” Joshua told ESPN. “I’m not depending on punch power; it takes a lot more to be a great fighter. I’ll break him down with my spirit. I showed Daniel and his whole team the respect they deserve through my training camp and that’s going to put me in good stead. I’m tough, so is he. May the best man win. Good luck to him and his team.

“One thing when first I started boxing is, I wanted to bring the heavyweight division back alive in the U.K. So well done to everyone here as well. What a blessing to be back again… we’re ready to rock and roll. I’m in supreme condition physically and mentally. I’ve been watching some of the old fights as well to remind myself what I’m capable of” (h/t MMA Mania).

Daniel Dubois slams table in frustration, Anthony Joshua face off at press conference: 'Move on'

Ahead of his undisputed IBF heavyweight title defense against former world champion, Anthony Joshua this weekend in London, Daniel Dubois let his emotions get the better of him during a pre-fight press conference this week, slamming a table with a clenched fist before a toned face-off.

Dubois, who won the interim IBF heavyweight crown back in June with an eighth round knockout win over Filip Hrgovic in Riyadh, saw his interim status upgraded to undisputed upon the vacating of Ukrainian star and common-foe, Oleksandr Usyk.

Discussing his prior sparring session with former two-time world heavyweight champion, Joshua ahead of the pairing — Dubios slammed the table with his fist after pointing to the fact that come this weekend they will be competing for real.

“It was sparring, now we’re fighting, this is different,” Daniel Dubois explained. “Move on.”

For Joshua, the 34-year-old most recently took on former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou earlier this year in Saudi Arabia, stopping the mixed martial arts fighter with a devastating second round knockout win.

The victory came as part of a four-fight winning run for Watford puncher, Joshua, who has previously bested the trio of Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, and Otto Wallin.
