In 2018, the Octagon headed to Liverpool, England for one reason, Darren Till. When Till was announced as the headliner, many pegged it as the same as Conor McGregor fighting in Dublin. But, the Englishman had a much harder fight in fighting the number one contender at the time, Stephen Thompson. Ultimately, it was a […]

Darren Till Insists He Can Still Make Welterweight Despite Liverpool Mishap

Darren Till says he can still make welterweight despite UFC Liverpool:

Darren Till badly missed the welterweight limit for his most recent fight against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, and with his history of missing weight, fight fans have a serious question about Till’s championship ability at 170 pounds.

Can he make weight and make weight consistently?

According to Till himself, making welterweight isn’t a problem:

“I can still make welterweight, that’s for certain. Yeah, it’s put a little dampener on my win, but it doesn’t change the fact that I beat the No. 1 in the world. If anything, I was worse off in the fight. I was at 60 percent because I cut weight wrong that night. I was dehydrated, I was weak, so I wasn’t my full self, but I just feel like a bit too much of a big deal has been made out of it.”

Rumors and speculation about Till’s last weight cut ranged from “he went blind” to “he was passing out,” and all of that is actually pretty scary if it’s true. But Till says the whole thing has been blown out of proportion, and only suffered dizziness, Till said to ESPN:

“I didn’t lose sight, I was just feeling dizzy. It was five o’clock in the morning and I was up all night and I’d been back and forth to the hospital and then in the sauna. Obviously, the video makes it look a little bit worse but it wasn’t in any way bad.”

Till must not have been too badly compromised by the weight cut, as he went on to defeat perennial number two welterweight ‘Wonderboy’ by decision at UFC Liverpool.

But until he can comfortably make 170 pounds and do so consistently, Till will likely have to answer these kinds of questions about his weight.

Do you think Till’s weight has been exaggerated and overblown? Or is him making welterweight still a serious question mark?

Wonderboy Reveals Potentially Serious Knee Injury From Till Fight

“Wonderboy” says those knee kicks really took a toll…

The post Wonderboy Reveals Potentially Serious Knee Injury From Till Fight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson lost a competitive fight to hometown favorite Darren Till in Liverpool last weekend, and Till injured “Wonderboy’s” knee midway through the fight, which Thompson says made it difficult to move the way he wanted to move.

The fight was almost entirely contested on the feet, as the karateka and Muay Thai practitioner went to work for five long rounds. Till worked some effected kicks to “Wonderboy’s” knee before scoring a knockdown later in the fight.

“Wonderboy” admits those knee kicks from Till took their toll, and the injury to his left knee, which he’s had multiple surgeries on in the past, made it impossible for him to get his game going, Thompson revealed on The MMA Hour:

“It was almost like this dude was trying to put me out. He hit me in the knee and after that my movement was pretty much out the window. I was more focused on keeping my knee — it was just another thing to think about out there.”

“Hopefully it’s nothing major. But it sucks, man. It really does. Disappointed by the whole situation and then coming out of it with an injury like that, it makes it all worse. It was more trying to keep my leg from collapsing than anything. It just really felt unstable in that fifth round.

“I was trying to hit the guy hard, I really was. I just was unable to put myself in a situation to do so.”

Till took home a unanimous decision victory, although many fight fans and fellow fighters believe “Wonderboy” should have taken the judges’ decision.

Till ended up weighing in several pounds overweight the day before the fight and was forced to stay under 188 pounds on fight day. He managed to do so, and the fight went on as scheduled.

While the two looked to basically be the same size, “Wonderboy” concedes that Till is definitely thicker and sturdier than he looks:

“When you make contact [with an opponent], you can tell you’re pretty much the same size,” he said. “When I would kick or even side kick or even try to punch Darren Till, you could tell that he was a pretty solid dude. You can’t really see it in his upper body, but you can see it in his lower body. He’s thick — thick guy.”

What do you think of this kind of knee kicks employed by Jon Jones, Darren Till and the like?

Are they a cheap tactic designed solely injure a fighter unfairly, or is it just a legitimate MMA technique?

UFC welterweight contender Darren Till snapped back at internet trolls who laid into him after Till recently posted a video of him dropping an overmatched training partner.

Till is preparing for the biggest fight in his young MMA career in Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, and posted a video of himself looking pretty sharp, but it was against an unknown, nameless training partner.

The internet trolls ripped into Till for bullying the downed training partner, and Till has had enough (via MMA Fighting):

Rounds upon rounds upon rounds @ufceurope

A post shared by Till (@darrentill2) on

The ensuing response prompted Till to post a lengthy diatribe, claiming the training partner in question had actually gone a “few (hard) rounds”, and that they both got their licks in:

“For all you dumb cunts commenting on my previous video talking shit, saying that it’s bullying. Giving my training partner shit saying he is not worthy to be in there with me! We had a good few rounds together were he gave me a smack and I gave him one, it was a hard day and I feel I have it my all and that previous video was a good clip of me landing some shots. All you internet fighters haven’t got a fucking clue so stick to internet fighting and leave the real fighting to us! Here is a video which I posted last December of me taking a smack! I post when I’m hitting and I post when I’m taking a smack, so keep talking shit!”

Till will fortunately have the crowd’s support when he takes on ‘Wonderboy’, as the two will be the main event in Till’s native Liverpool.

Did Till go overboard with an overmatched training partner in the first video?

A couple weeks ago, the UFC drew a small amount of criticism when the poster came out for May 27’s UFC Fight Night 130 from Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

While that’s not a hard thing to find on social media these days, the official poster was perhaps justified in its criticism because it was far too basic to convey the potential electricity generated by the Stephen Thompson vs. Darren Till welterweight main event.

Check it out right here and decide for yourself:

If you didn’t like it, not to worry – popular MMA poster artist bosslogic had his own exciting rendition featuring a Karate Kid re-imagining, and it was so exciting that Thompson himself had to give his own props online.

There’s little doubt that the creative rendition of the classic karate movie (which is, coincidentally, seeing its own resurgence on YouTube this week), is an amazing, individual pairing of Thompson and Till that sets the stage for an anticipated feature bout in the UFC’s first venture to Liverpool.

The Liverpudlian fans will be going wild for hometown rising star Till, and at that point, the poster obviously won’t matter.

You have to wonder if the UFC could have stepped up their design game for a fight with so many unique dynamics, however, especially given they’re owned by a Hollywood giant with a knack for success in a town full of flash.
