Both needing a win to cement their status in a talented division, David Branch and Thiago Santos faced off on the main card of tonight’s (Sat., April 21, 2018) UFC Fight Night 128 from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The No. 8-ranked Branch returned to the UFC last year after winning the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) light heavyweight and middleweight titles following an unsuccessful octagon run in 2010-2011. He produced mixed results in his second UFC run thus far, winning a boring split decision over Krzysztof Jotko before getting finished by former champ Luke Rockhold.

The No. 12-ranked Santos, on the other hand, was on a steamrolling win streak with four straight TKO victories. Quietly tied with Anderson Silva for the most striking finishes in UFC middleweight history, ‘Marreta’ was set to explode into the top 10 with a win.

Clearly, Santos was looking to make it a kickboxing match while Branch was most likely looking to make the bout far dirtier in order to drag it to the ground. The bout began with Santos throwing one of his trademark high kicks. He followed with a body and leg kick. Santos landed a left hook and kept throwing heavy strikes as advertised, but Branch countered a few times. The fight was a bit tentative, but Santos again threw some big shots.

Then, it was all over in a flash.

The more measured Branch unloaded a monstrous knockout shot from out of nowhere, flooring ‘Marreta’ and ending his four-fight win streak in a flash.

Final Result: David Branch def. Thiago Santos via R1 KO (punches, 2:30)

The UFC’s FOX-aired cards seem to be getting a good deal smaller in scope and quality since the UFC signed over television broadcasting rights to FOX.

The first event featured a heavyweight title fight, something that would entice perhaps more casual fans to eventually order a PPV.

Now, the main cards are extremely top-heavy at best, and not noteworthy at worst. Saturday night was a typical FOX card in 2017/2018; some bright spots and a whole lot of waiting and drawn out fights in between.

Regardless, the UFC landscape has changed again, with a once-great middleweight re-emerging as a top contender and a slew of other changes to the chess game that makes up the UFC weight divisions.

Where do the fighters of UFC on FOX 27 go from here? We broke that down in our list of the five best fights to make following UFC on FOX 27:

Andre Fili

5. Andre Fili vs. Doo Ho Choi

Fili and Choi are two solid but young featherweights who are looking to establish themselves in the division with as much consistency as they can muster.

Choi faltered a bit in his last bout, dropping a TKO loss to veteran Jeremy Stephens, while Fili got back on track with a close split decision over Dennis Bermudez in the UFC on FOX 27 co-main event.

Both men have shown flashes of brilliance during their UFC careers, but have been dealt some stiff competition given their ages and experience.

A fight between the two is perfect for this point and time in their respective careers, and a win for either man woud put them that much closer to the consistency needed to make it to a title shot in a stacked division like featherweight.

According to a report from The Orlando Sentinel, which was later confirmed by MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, a middleweight bout between Yoel Romero and David Branch has been set for UFC on FOX 28.

Earlier this month, Branch, a former World Series of Fighting (WSOF) two-division champion, took to his official Twitter account to call out Romero, who responded and agreed to the fight. According to Helwani, the bout will be a three-round contest.

Romero, a former Olympian, is coming off of an interim title bout loss to Robert Whittaker last July at UFC 213. Prior to that, he had won eight consecutive fights with six of those victories coming by way of stoppage. He holds notable Octagon victories over Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo Souza and Chris Weidman.

Branch, on the other hand, had won 10-straight fights upon returning to the UFC earlier this year. He scored a decision victory over Krzystof Jotko at UFC 211 last May before suffering a stoppage loss to ex-champion Luke Rockhold this past September.

UFC on FOX 28 is set to take place at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida on Feb. 24, 2017. A main event for the card has not yet been announced.

It appears that UFC middleweight title contender Yoel Romero has found his next opponent.

If you recall, earlier this week, Romero went on record by saying that he was looking to return to action in a bout against former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.

However, he’s not getting that fight because Rockhold beat David Branch and is now taking on Whittaker for the middleweight title at UFC 221.

“I don’t understand why he said no. I don’t understand. Maybe he had a strategy in the mind. He say, ‘No I wont fight Yoel, I will fight somebody easy.’ Respect to David Branch, but that’s the way he thinks, you know? That’s Luke’s mentality, ‘I want a more easy fight, win and Yoel Romero lose his last fight.’” said the tank of a middleweight on a recent edition of The MMA Hour.

Branch is willing to fight Romero and even has a date and location set for the fight just as long as the UFC is up for making the fight official and Romero is willing to accept it.

That event is UFC on FOX 27, which is set to take place on February 24, 2018 at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. The main card will air on FOX Sports 1 while the preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

“People have reason to be feared by you my friend,” middleweight David Branch wrote on Twitter. “I want to fight the most dangerous people in the world and you’re one of them. February 24 at UFC on FOX in Orlando, I would like to do battle with you.”

Romero responded by writing the following on his official Twitter account:
