MMA veteran David Michaud may never fight again after he announced the cancellation of his upcoming fight with Rory MacDonald due to a congenital heart condition recently discovered by his doctors.

Michaud, 32, broke the news yesterday on his Twitter account. He was set to face MacDonald on April 29 in the tournament-based PFL’s Season 3 event, but said he has been diagnosed with a “congenital bicuspid aortic valve with dilated aortic root”. As a result, he said he’s at risk for a potentially fatal heart episode if he were to continue his fight career.

Michaud wrote he learned of the condition as he underwent a standard pre-fight medical checkup. An EKG came back “abnormal” several times, which required more tests so he could be cleared by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, which regulates the April 29 event at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J.

“I’ve talked to a handful of cardiologists and they all told me fighting with it or any contact sports in general could prove fatal, as the aorta can tear or rupture from impact,” Michaud wrote in a text to MMA Fighting. “This was all just in the last five, six days so as of right now, I am not sure what I am doing from here.”

Michaud has fought for several major MMA promotions, including the UFC, Bellator, LFA and most recently the PFL. He made it to the finals of the Season 2 welterweight tournament, winning three of four bouts before taking a loss in the finals of the tournament.

MacDonald’s fight against Michaud marked MacDonald’s scheduled debut for the promotion after a long stint in Bellator, where he won the welterweight title and competed for the middleweight championship.

While MacDonald is likely to find a replacement hopefully, it’s a concerning and scary time for Michaud, whom we will never see int he cage likely ever again. Hopefully he’ll find a role on a team as a top coach, as his successful runs could be useful for the up and comers in the sport.

Do you think MacDonald will get a replacement? How do you feel about Michaud’s heart condition?

Rory MacDonald is back. After a year on the sidelines, the former Bellator Welterweight Champion will return to partake in another tournament. The Professional Fighters League’s 2021 season, appearing first against David Michaud on April 29th.

MacDonald last fought Douglas Lima in October of 2019, in an attempt to defend his Bellator title once more. However, “The Red King’s” reign would be ended as Lima would go on to edge him out to an unanimous decision victory and achieve the Grand Prix’s million dollar prize.

After the devastating loss, Macdonald would pursue another million-dollar prize. Where better to look for a million-dollar tournament than the PFL? With a finished contract, the Grand Prix finalist would test the waters of free agency and land himself with PFL’s upcoming season.

However, PFL’s next season would never come into fruition. With the expanse of COVID-19, PFL decided to cancel all their events in 2020.

Despite being without a fight for more than a year, Macdonald showed great strides with his training. He ventured off to join Sanford MMA, training alongside his former foe, Robbie Lawler, adding more weapons to his arsenal.

The former UFC title challenger announced on his Instagram Tuesday morning he would be making his promotional debut against 2019 season finalist, David Michaud, on April 29th. This will mark the born-again brawler’s first non-title bout since 2017.

Do you think Rory MacDonald will be successful in his PFL debut?

Dillashaw vs. Barao 2, Rampage vs. Maldonado, Bisping vs. Dollaway Confirmed for UFC 186

It’s official: UFC 186 (April 25th, Montreal) will be headlined by a rematch between bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw and ex-champ Renan Barao, and will also feature the UFC return of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson against “The Iron Hillbilly” (actual nickname!) Fabio Maldonado. Both matchups were previously rumored last week, but UFC president Dana White confirmed them yesterday during an appearance on TSN’s SportsCenter.

But that’s not all, folks. White confirmed five more matchups for the card, which are as follows…

Rory MacDonald vs. Hector Lombard: Yeah, we already knew about this one. The winner gets the next welterweight title shot. Or maybe the Hendricks/Brown winner gets it. Or maybe Kelvin Gastelum gets it? Cripes, who knows.

Michael Bisping vs. CB Dollaway: Bisping is coming off his guillotine-choke loss to Luke Rockhold at that nutso Sydney card, while Dollaway was recently blown up by Lyoto Machida. Fun fact: Bisping hasn’t won two fights in a row since 2011.

Patrick Cote vs. Joe Riggs: Cote hasn’t competed since a unanimous decision loss to Stephen Thompson snapped his three-fight win streak back in September. Riggs will try to rebound from his unsuccessful UFC return at UFC on FOX 13 in December, when his neck immediately gave out on him during a fight against Ben Saunders.

Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. David Michaud: This is not an MMA fight, but the finals of Top Chef Montreal. Can Aubin-Mercier’s innovative molecular gastronomy defeat the impeccable French traditionalism of Michaud? (Ed. note: Okay fine, this is a lightweight fight between two guys without Wikipedia pages. Both are 1-1 in the UFC. Thanks, Sherdog.)

Jessica Rakoczy vs. Valerie Letourneau: Rakoczy was TKO’d by Julianna Pena at the TUF 18 Finale in November, and currently holds the worst professional record of any UFC fighter (1-4 with one no-contest). Letourneau was choked out by Roxanne Modafferi during her elimination fight to get into the TUF 18 house, but was given a UFC contract anyway and won a tough split-decision against Elizabeth Phillips last June.
