Dominant UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson etched his name into the history books this past weekend (April 15, 2017), as he tied Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive title defenses by defending his 125-pound strap for the 10th time with a third round submission victory over Wilson Reis.

Johnson has consistently proven that he’s ahead of the pack at 125 pounds and he’s nearly cleaned out the division, which is why some have expressed interest in seeing him face off with bantamweight titleholder Cody Garbrandt. “Mighty Mouse” has said that he welcomes all challenges to his title, but he also confirmed that his next fight will not be against Garbrandt:

“He’s his own person,” Johnson said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Me and Cody talked off scene, everything’s fine, its just business. … It will not be my next fight. Don’t worry about it.”

As far as who his next opponent could be, Johnson didn’t have a definitive answer, although he did make it clear that he’ll be remaining at flyweight where he’ll look to break Silva’s long held record:

“People say I need to go up and do this, do that,” Johnson said. “Why not be the greatest ever? UFC went out and signed a whole bunch of great new flyweight talent and I would not mind putting my name against their’s and giving them a loss.”

“I’m going to let my body heal, relax, enjoy this history and just take my time,” Johnson said. “I won’t say any guy is on the radar until UFC sends me a contract, and then, that’s how it was for Wilson too. I knew Wilson was fighting, I didn’t know if we was going to win or not, I didn’t care if he was going to win or not, I had my training camp and I was ready to fight on April 15. If the UFC gave me a list of their events for the fall, I will look at it and go ‘hmm, I like this fight, I like the location, I’ll start my training camp 10 weeks out from there, and whoever is my opponent is my opponent.”

Who would you like to see the reigning flyweight king take on next?

Dominick Cruz: Demetrious Johnson Is Beatable

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, the UFC’s No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, is the only man in promotional history to hold 125-pound gold. Since acquiring the title in 2012, Johnson has run a demolition course through the flyweight division, defending the strap eight straight times. He has looked unbeatable to say the least.

But the reality of the situation is that he is beatable, and few fighters are more aware of that than reigning bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who handed Johnson one of his only two career losses back in 2011.

Coincidently, Cruz is a training partner of Wilson Reis, a man slated to challenge Johnson for the title in the co-main event of July 30’s UFC 201 from Atlanta, Georgia. According to “The Dominator”, Reis too knows that the puzzle that is Demetrious Johnson can indeed be solved:

“Demetrious Johnson is not unbeatable – if anyone knows that, it’s me,” Cruz told MMAjunkie. “He’s a very beatable individual. I beat him for five rounds straight. He didn’t win one round of that fight. I know how to beat him. I understand what you’ve got to do. And Wilson does, too.”

Despite being a rather unknown to the casual fan, Reis is no push over. The 31-year-old Brazilian contender has won three of his last four, and possesses quite the well-rounded skillset according to Cruz:

“I love that fight because there’s a lot of unknowns about Wilson,” Cruz said. ”I brought him to help me get ready for my first fight with Joseph Benavidez because he’s a short-statured fighter, with good explosive movement. And he has a good grappling game in general. He’s got good wrestling, good jiu-jitsu. And if you look at his striking, he keeps getting better training with us. We understand how to build a gameplan around his strengths.”

Being skilled in every area likely won’t be enough to topple “Mighty Mouse”, however, as the title-holder has appeared to be near perfect in all aspects of the fight game. But Cruz once again claimed that Johnson is beatable, and it may be that mental edge that leads Reis to victory in the mind of the bantamweight king:

“Wilson believes in himself. The first step is believing that Demetrious is beatable. And we all know that he is. A lot of these other guys go in there almost believing that they can’t. Wilson won’t go in there with that mindset. He’s going in there very confident. And he should, because he’s very tough to deal with.”

Over the last few years, Cruz has become one of the best analysts in the sport, breaking down fights with intelligence and fight knowledge that very few possess. Is he on to something here with Reis, or will Johnson once again defend his long-held title?

After compiling an impressive seven-fight win streak between 2012 and 2014, Matt “The Immortal” Brown has hit some rough times as of late, losing three out of his last four bouts.

Most recently competing at May 14’s UFC 198, Brown is coming off of a rather one-sided loss to Brazilian grappling wizard Demian Maia. Despite his recent troubles, he has faced off with the best the division has to offer, as his other two losses in that stretch have come at the hands of former champion Johny Hendricks and reigning title holder Robbie Lawler.

Looking to bounce back quickly, the 35-year-old Brown appears to already have his next fight set.

According to ESPN.com, “The Immortal” will meet fellow struggling veteran Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger at July 30’s UFC 201 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia live on pay-per-view (PPV).

Ellenberger has hit even rougher times than Brown as of late, losing five of his last six Octagon showings. The 31-year-old suffered a brutal stoppage loss to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson last July, as well as a unanimous decision loss to Tarec Saffiedine last January.

This fight makes sense for both men, as each combatant is looking to rebound after disappointing losses.

UFC 201 will be headlined by an intriguing welterweight title clash as Lawler once again puts his 170-pound strap on the line against Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley.

The co-main event will also feature a title fight as dominant flyweight kingpin Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson meets veteran Wilson Reis.

Reigning UFC flyweight kingpin Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson has put a serious hurting on the 125-pound division since becoming the inaugural champion in 2012.

He has since defended his strap an ultra-impressive eight-straight times, and has come away with five finishes in those eight victories. His most recent accomplishment was a breath taking one, as “Mighty Mouse” demolished former Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo in the first round of their bout at last month’s UFC 197 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Some may argue that Johnson has already cleared out the division, an argument that has the UFC scrambling to create intriguing matchups for their flyweight title holder.

It was recently announced that the winner of the upcoming 24th season of The Ultimate Fighter will receive an immediate title shot and take on Johnson at the finale next December.

Somewhat surprising news then came out tonight (May 18, 2016) as well, indicating that the champion isn’t willing to sit around and wait until then.

UFC Tonight’s Megan Olivi reported that Johnson will next defend his title against No. 8-ranked Wilson Reis in the co-main event of July 30’s UFC 201 from Atlanta, Georgia.

Reis has won three of his last four bouts including victories over the likes of Joey Sanchez, Scott Jorgensen, and Dustin Ortiz. Most recently, he earned a decision over Ortiz last January.

UFC 201 will be headlined by a welterweight title clash, as reigning 170-pound champion Robbie Lawler defends his title against Tyron Woodley.
