For Demetrious Johnson, Champ vs. Champ Fight with Garbrandt Is the Only Call

For a long time, Demetrious Johnson has been the UFC’s most anonymous champion. Every few months, it dusts him off, winds him up and lets him do his thing—which is something close to perfection—and everyone claps politely and then proceeds to forget about him within a few minutes of his departure.

At least for one night, we may have hope that is about to change. In Kansas City, Missouri, Johnson was greeted like a star, performed like a star and walked off basking in the brightest spotlight his amazing reign has yet seen.

Perhaps this is all it took: a near flawless, jaw-dropping kind of mastery that left him alongside one of the most legendary names in the sport and threatening to rise above him. Johnson’s third-round submission win over Wilson Reis on Saturday marked his 10th straight UFC flyweight title defense, tying Anderson Silva for the most successful defenses in UFC history.

“[Georges St-Pierre] and Anderson Silva were great champions, but I’m the best champion to ever step foot in the Octagon,” Johnson said in the cage moments after his win, per the UFC.

That claim is still debatable, but his case has plenty of evidence that is irrefutable, and more than that, it continues to build.

With one more win, Johnson will have done something that no one in the UFC has ever done. That is an argument with no counter.

The question between now and then will be which man gets the chance to end his streak. Will it be Joseph Benavidez, in a trilogy bout? Will Ray Borg get a shot? Or will the UFC try to set up Johnson’s most high-profile match to date and grant bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt’s wish to face him?

The last of the three is the one Johnson is most deserving of, but it’s also the matchup with the most hurdles. Johnson would have to be willing to wait until July just to set it up, all the while hoping that Garbrandt defeats T.J. Dillashaw in his first title defense.

And oh, yeah: He’d require a seven-figure payday, something that has thus far eluded him in his career.

“The whole thing with Cody; I’m not worried about it,” Johnson said in the post-fight press conference. “I’ve never turned anybody down. I have nothing but love for the guy. He just won a belt. I’ve defended mine 10 times. If he comes down at 125, we welcome it. He doesn’t dictate terms. Well maybe he does? I don’t know, but at the end of the day, it is what it is. If Cody wants to come to 125, and UFC deems him ready for a title shot, perfect.”

If Johnson comes off as indifferent to the prospective champion vs. champion fight, it’s only because humility and modesty is a staple of his personality, as is his continued drive.

As Johnson’s reign has unfolded, there has been a striking difference in his championship comportment as compared to either Silva or St-Pierre.

Late in their reigns, both of those men openly discussed the crushing strain of wearing a target. Johnson has never shown any signs of being stressed by the many would-be usurpers circling him.

Stardom also has little meaning to him, which is why he has never altered his personality to fit the MMA superstar archetype.

“I’m not searching for that. That’s not why I do this sport,” he said. “I’m not here to be prom king. I want to be the best fighter in the UFC. I think I proved that tonight, dominating a world-class grappler. I don’t think I was touched on the feet.”

Yes, Saturday’s win was even more stunningly perfect than those that have come before it. According to FightMetric, Johnson limited Reis to landing just 10.6 percent of his strikes (18 of 170), a dismal ratio that amounted to quicksand for the challenger. It’s already nearly impossible to beat Johnson, but when you are consistently swinging at air, it is hopeless. By the middle of the second round, Reis must have felt like a dog chasing his tail.

And like all great champions, once Johnson had his opponent deflated, the fight’s ending was a mere formality. Johnson nearly finished Reis in the second, dropping him with a knee to the body and then pouncing on his grounded opponent with a series of hammerfists, but Reis was able to survive the few seconds to the horn.

Reis wasn’t so lucky in the third. Worn down and damaged, he was put down after Johnson pummeled him from the top and pivoted to an arm bar, making the first submission loss in Reis’s 29-fight, decadelong career.

When it was over, Reis just shrugged and hugged Johnson. There was nothing else to do. There was no way to spin things for a positive outlook.

There was just the stark bluntness of both the process and the result.

And that, in the end, is the greatness of Johnson. Yes, his numbers are impressive. Yes, his skill set is sublime. But during this 10-fight stretch, he has mostly left opponents bewildered.

He has been so good for so long that in formulating the game plan against him, opposing coaches have to concede a few basic truths. If they are honest with themselves and their charges, they must admit in their preamble, “I know you’re going to miss strikes…”

With that kind of statement, there is usually something afterward, some plan of action or attack. Some theoretical offense. But none of it ever comes to pass.

Against Demetrious Johnson, it’s a pipe dream, a mirage, a fantasy.

Maybe we can all acknowledge him now. And maybe the UFC can give him his well-deserved payday. Whether it’s Garbrandt or the co-main event spot of a Conor McGregor card, Johnson has earned this like no one in UFC history ever has.

At least on Saturday night, the fight world took notice. That’s a start. Now as he flies back home and disappears from our view for a couple of months, let’s not forget him.

Demetrious Johnson just made a case for being the greatest mixed martial artist (MMA) of all time.

Earlier tonight (Sat. April 15, 2017) ‘Mighty Mouse’ made a record 10th consecutive flyweight title defense, tying former middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s UFC record, when he took home a third round submission win over Wilson Reis in the main event of UFC on FOX 23. Johnson is now on a 12-fight win streak with half of those victories coming via finish.

UFC President Dana White spoke about Johnson’s performance at the post-fight press conference today, and had nothing but praise for his 125-pound champ’s performance inside the Octagon in Kansas City:

“What’s crazy is, he does what he does here tonight, right?” White said at the UFC on FOX 24 post-fight press conference. “And I’m doing an interview with Brazil and I start to walk away and I hear him (Demetrious) ask his coach ‘What did I do wrong?’ I stop and said ‘Hey, Coach, let me answer this for you. Nothing.’ First of all he looked incredible on his feet. The punch stat numbers are ridiculous, right? Then he goes to the ground and is absolutely dominating and goes for the most dangerous move you can try and pull off, an armbar.

“Not only pulling off an armbar when you’re dominating like that, but against a Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion,” White said. “The guys’s an absolute freak of nature – Joe Rogan was blowing me up saying ‘This guy is a wizard, he’s the greatest ever,’ Rogan’s going – you know Rogan is a jiu-jitsu nut so he’s going crazy. So well deserved.”

Johnson hasn’t surpassed Silva’s title defense record quite yet, as one more victory will but the sole flyweight champ in promotion history over the top. White will hold off on calling ‘Mighty Mouse’ the greatest of all time out of respect to ‘The Spider’, but admits it’s hard to deny the 125-pound kingpin the moniker given his dominance in the last five years:

“Listen he’s got one more fight, and he breaks Anderson Silva’s record, and he continues – Listen he’s already the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, and he strives to be better each time, and he gets better each time,” White said. “Literally destroying people. This kid could be considered the G.O.A.T right now, or to give Anderson Silva the true respect you wait until he actually breaks the record. It’s hard to not call this guy the greatest of all time.”

After having essentially cleaned out the top contenders at 125 pounds Johnson finds himself in a bit of a predicament as it pertains to who will get the honor to challenge him for what could be a record-setting 11th consecutive title defense. White told MMA fans not to worry, however, as they’ll find a suitable opponent to challenge for Johnson’s throne next:

“Anderson Silva had that problem too,” said White. “When you run through guys as long as these two have run through guys – yeah. But I promise you we’ll find somebody.”

UFC on FOX 24 emanated from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO tonight (Saturday, April 15, 2017). The stacked card was headlined by Demetrious Johnson’s record-tying tenth straight successful title defense against Wilson Reis.

Johnson put on a masterclass performance. After having a surprisingly hard time with Tim Elliott, who won the 24th season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ to earn himself a title shot, “Mighty Mouse” was in control from start to finish against Reis. Too fast, too elusive, and too technical for the Brazilian challenger, Johnson worked his prey over, gradually wearing him down before finishing him with a third-round armbar. Johnson banked one of the $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses and vowed to break the title defense record his next time out.

The other $50,000 Performance of the Night check went to another main card fighter. Robert Whittaker picked up the most impressive victory of his career, by far, by TKO-ing Jacare Souza in the second round of their featured middleweight bout. The Brazilian grappling phenom failed to keep Whittaker down for any length of time and was forced to deal with the Kiwi’s dangerous striking. It did not go well. A head kick and follow-up ground and pound put an end to Jacare’s title aspirations and announced Whittaker as perhaps the most exciting contender at 185 pounds.

Fight of the Night was wrapped up as soon as Tim Elliott and Louis Smolka started their scramble-fest for the ages. Elliott hit takedown after takedown, only for the Hawaiian to continually threaten with submissions and sweeps. Both flyweights found themselves in dire straits on the mat on multiple occasions in a thrilling back-and-forth affair. In the end, Elliott’s deluge of takedowns and advances won him a unanimous decision, but both men walked away $50,000 richer.

Already the top pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, longtime UFC flyweight champion Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson took one step closer to becoming the best fighter of all-time when he tied Anderson Silva’s record of UFC title defenses with 10 by submitting Wilson Reis in the third round of their main event bout at tonight’s (Sat., April 15, 2017) UFC on FOX 24 from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Johnson simply looked without peer in all facets of fighting, displaying precise, lightning-quick volume striking to hit Reis at will to soften him up for a takedown followed by a seamless segway into a fight-ending armbar. It’s not just the fact “Mighty Mouse” defeats his opponents; it’s that they just don’t have any chance at beating him anywhere the fight goes. His growing list of illustrious accomplishments has him up with all-time greats Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, and Jon Jones, and indeed some already feel he’s surpassed those fighting legends.

That has ‘Mighty Mouse’ on the verge of breaking Silva’s all-time record, where he’ll almost definitely become the best MMA fighter in the sport’s history. Is he already there?

UFC on FOX 24 went down tonight (Saturday, April 15, 2017) from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO. The main event featured the top pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, attempting to tie Anderson Silva’s consecutive title defense record at 10. Brazilian contender Wilson Reis stood in his way, but not for long.

Johnson made it look easy, dancing cirlces around the challenger, battering Reis with kicks and punches. The champion was in control of every phase as Reis struggled to keep up and land anything more than occasional leg kicks. By round three, Reis was spent, and Johnson moved in for the kill. A knee to the body dropped an off-balance Reis and DJ pounced. Ground and pound followed as Johnson advanced to mount, then immediately snatched the fight-ending armbar. When Johnson next steps into the cage, he’ll be trying to break Silva’s long-standing record.

The co-main event was a strawweight contenders scrap between “Thug” Rose Namajunas and Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson. Namajunas walked through Waterson’s kicks on the feet, reveresed a head-and-arm throw to take Waterson’s back in round one, and dropped her foe with a nasty head kick in round two. Waterson recovered to some extent, but “Thug” Rose gave her no room to breathe. Namajunas jumped on Waterson’s back as she tried to stand, and finished it with the choke soon after.

Finally, former welterweight Robert Whittaker announced himself as a potential title challenger in a crowded middleweight division with an emphatic TKO over top contender Jacare Souza. The Brazilian failed to get the fight into his wheelhouse on the ground, and Whittaker made him pay. A head kick wobbled Jacare, and Whittaker followed up with punches and elbows that forced referee Mario Yamasaki to step in on Jacare’s behalf. In the aftermath, Whittaker called for a fight with Michael Bisping, who he was scheduled to fight last year before injury nixed the fight.
