UFC on Fox 24: Wilson Reis Is In For The Fight Of HIs Life Against Demetrious Johnson

The main event of UFC on Fox 24 pits Wilson Reis against the “God of Fighting” Demetrious Johnson. It’s a match up that Reis fought hard to earn, but that makes it no less easier by any stretch of the imagination. Demetrious Johnson is tough. Not just the “he takes a good shot” kind of tough, but made of different stuff as far as competition goes. Johnson hopes to crush his opponents by taking their strengths and making them null and void. So while Wilson Reis has certainly earned his spot opposite the champion, he has an uphill battle ahead of him.

As far as performances go, Wilson Reis hasn’t looked like the ultimate world beater. He has good fundamentals as far as his striking goes, but where he really shines is the wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu department. Reis is a ground fighter through and through who uses a variety of different takedowns to get the job done. That said, if he hopes to pick up a victory here then he can’t rely solely on his grappling. In fact, as dangerous as it may sound, Reis should perhaps take a strike first, wrestle second approach to this fight.

Johnson is expecting the takedown in this fight, so using an alternative game plan will be key. But it’s not simply the execution of the strategy that should be considered. Reis’ mindset should be focused on fighting anywhere the fight takes him. If he relies too much on his wrestling and grappling, Johnson will chew him up. Playing the outside game with long range weapons is an ideal strategy to force Johnson to push forward. It’s during these moments that Reis can take advantage and score a reactive takedown. Firing off jabs and front kicks will keep Johnson at bay and when the champ does choose to rattle off combinations, that’s when Reis should look to level change. The gas tank of Reis will be tested in this one, so he’ll have to be smart with his energy systems.

The champion has a far more interesting case on his hands. For Demetrious Johnson, having a multitude of skills to choose from makes his strategy as complex as it is simple. Johnson has so many tools to choose from it’s a matter of being patient and seeing what threat Reis presents. Johnson can choose to be aggressive counter puncher if Reis is passive, hit reactive takedowns if his opponent is overly aggressive. He can box if Reis is looking to shoot in, kickbox if the challenger chooses to box.

For Johnson the sky’s the limit. Preferably the aggressive counter striking approach will likely work best. Touching Reis with jabs, forcing the challenger to shoot in, stuffing the takedown and countering immediately with power punches. As most other ‘Mighty Mouse’ fights, this is Johnson’s match to lose.

It’s a up hill battle for Wilson Reis. Can he get the job done against Demetrious Johnson?

If Demetrious Johnson were to step into the Octagon against Cody Garbrandt, the flyweight champ would like to do so at 135 pounds.

Johnson, the sole flyweight champion in UFC history as well as arguably the promotion’s most dominant champion of all time, prepares to defend his 125-pound strap for a record 10th consecutive time tomorrow night (Sat. April 15, 2017) against Wilson Reis. ‘Mighty Mouse’ has dominated the 125-pound division since its inception and has long been called for to move up in weight to see if he can continue his dominance at bantamweight.

The current 135-pound champ, Cody Garbrandt, would be an interesting fight for the flyweight king, who tells TNS’s Aaron Bronsteter that if that fight were to be booked he’d like to compete at bantamweight (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“Obviously 135,” Johnson said. “They’re both compelling, but for me, I’d just go up. That way, if I win, I get his belt. I can stay at (1)35. For him to come down to (1)25 and he wins, does he keep the belt or does he relinquish it? Because if he comes down and beats me (and return to bantamweight), then I’ll just fight for the belt again and get it back. Like, ‘Thanks!’ But yeah, it’s a great fight, and if it happens, it happens.”

Garbrandt is currently undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career and comes off of a monumental win over Dominick Cruz to win the bantamweight title. ‘No Love’ ended ‘The Dominator’s’ near decade undefeated streak and is now set to make his first career title defense against former teammate turned hated rival TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213 on pay-per-view (PPV).

Johnson hasn’t suffered a loss since 2011 when Cruz took home a unanimous decision win over ‘Mighty Mouse’ in Washington. Since then Johnson has become the first and only flyweight champion in UFC history and is currently on a 11-fight win streak.

In the main event of UFC on FOX 24 tomorrow night from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, Johnson will attempt to tie former middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s title defense record at 10 against submission specialist Wilson Reis.

The UFC heads to Kansas City, Missouri, for the first time with one of their strongest Fox cards to date.

Headlining the action will be Demetrious Johnson. The UFC flyweight champion is arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport today and possibly ever. He is top notch in every facet of the game. “Mighty Mouse” is closing in on Anderson Silva’s title defense record (10). A win will see Johnson tie the mark.

Perhaps the most compelling matchup on the card is the co-main event.

Strawweight contenders Michelle Waterson and Rose Namajunas meet for the first time inside the cage. They are two of the most marketable and promising strawweights on the roster, and a big win on Saturday could see them as the next challenger for the title.

Who does the B/R staff favor in the UFC on Fox 24 main card matchups?

Craig Amos, Steven Rondina, Scott Harris and, myself, Nathan McCarter are here once again to give you our thoughts. Pull up and chair and gander at who we picked to get their hand raised in each of the four main card tilts this Saturday.
