Earlier today (Sat. October 26, 2019) Demian Maia bested Ben Askren in the UFC Singapore main event. Maia submitted “Funky” in the third round of their grappling affair. It was a big setback for Askren, who was hoping to get in the title hunt after making his UFC debut earlier this year.

Now, on a two-fight losing streak, no longer undefeated, and 35-years-old, Askren’s window appears to be closing quickly. Askren’s teammate and UFC on ESPN analyst, Tyron Woodley, offered his thoughts on his training partner’s performance after the bout. Woodley explained what he thinks Askren could’ve done to have seen more success against Maia. (H/T MMA News)

“The thing about Ben, when I was looking down there yelling and screaming, if he would’ve thrown overhand rights and got his head off-line he would’ve been able to access the right leg of Demian Maia,” Woodley said.

“If he would’ve thrown that shovel uppercut and got his head off-line, he would’ve avoided those punches, he would’ve got close to the front leg which from a southpaw is gonna be his right leg. Getting to the back leg of Demian Maia is very difficult and when you go back there it’s a huge risk that you have to take, and I think that when you go for it with your head down and you’re trying to go for those strikes you put yourself in jeopardy.”

Woodley also explained that Askren might have been a bit overconfident in his ability to escape Maia’s submission attempt in the finishing sequence.

“As I said before, Ben likes to put himself in harm’s way because he knows he’s confident in getting out of it,” Woodley said. “This time he didn’t get out of it. I think he’ll go back home, I think he’ll look at the film and I think he can get back on the horse.”

What do you make of Woodley’s comments regarding Askren’s loss to Maia?

Demian Maia’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career is winding down, and when the Brazilian decides to hang his gloves up for good, Jorge Masvidal wants to be the man to fight him in his last bout.

Earlier today (Sat. October 26, 2019) Maia picked up a big submission victory over Ben Askren. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace choked Askren out in the third round of their UFC Singapore main event. Now, according to Masvidal’s manager, Ibrahim Kawa, Masvidal has informed him he wants to fight Maia in the latter’s retirement fight, running things back from their initial meeting.

“Just spoke to @GamebredFighter and he wants maia to save his last fight for him. Says after he wins the gold he will give him his shot. He really wants to run that one back.”

Maia and Masvidal initially met back at UFC 211 in 2017. It was a welterweight title eliminator that would’ve seen the winner challenge Tyron Woodley for the 170-pound title next. Maia was able to pick up the split decision victory on the night, going on to lose to Woodley in their title fight at UFC 214.

Following his defeat to Maia, Masvidal suffered another decision loss to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, before embarking on his current two-fight win streak. Now, “Gamebred” will main event UFC 244 next week against Nate Diaz for the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship. Despite all the controversy, the fight will, in fact, happen.

Earlier today (Sat. October 26, 2019) Demian Maia and Ben Askren met in a grappling showdown in the main event of UFC Singapore. It was a phenomenal affair between the two ground fighters, who got their respective shots in on the feet as well.

After some crazy scrambles, Maia was able to lock up a deep rear-naked choke in the third round. Askren was rendered unconscious, awarding Maia the victory. After his defeat, Askren has taken to Twitter to comment on the loss, apologizing to those he let down.

“Made a bad decision and I failed. Sorry to everyone who I let down.”

This is the second and only loss of Askren’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career. It’s also the second loss of his three-fight run with the UFC. Askren bested Robbie Lawler earlier this year to win his UFC debut, winning via controversial first-round submission by way of a bulldog choke. He then faced Jorge Masvidal in July, where he was the victim of the fastest knockout in UFC history at five seconds.

“Gamebred” caught Askren shooting in on a takedown with a flying knee. Now, after his submission loss to Maia, it remains unclear what the future holds for “Funky.” He did not confirm whether or not he would fight again, noting he has to talk with his family before making the decision.

In the main event of this morning’s (Sat. October 26, 2019) UFC Singapore event, elite grapplers Demian Maia and Ben Askren went head-to-head with one another.

Askren entered the contest fresh off the first defeat of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. In his second UFC bout this past July, Askren stepped into the Octagon with Jorge Masvidal, who finished “Funky” in five seconds with an opening flying knee for the fastest knockout in UFC history. He was hoping to get back on track with a solid victory over Maia.

As for the Brazilian, he entered the contest after having racked up a two-fight win streak. Before that, he was on a three-fight losing streak to 170-pound elite wrestlers Tyron Woodley, Kamaru Usman, and Colby Covington. A victory over Askren would’ve put Maia right back into the title hunt mix.

In the fight, both men landed some hard shots on one another, but the grappling exchanges on the ground kept fans on the edge of their seats. However, in the third round, Askren got a takedown that Maia swept, took full mount, and was able to lock in a rear-naked choke. Askren was subsequently put to sleep.
