BJ Penn is heading back to the Octagon.

On today’s (Wed. March 22, 2017) episode of UFC Tonight it was announced that the UFC Hall Of Famer will return to the Octagon for a featherweight bout against fellow veteran Dennis Siver. The contest will be held on a UFC Fight night from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City on June 25th.

The pair have previously been scheduled to match-up before at UFC 199 for Penn’s return bout, however, an injury forced the German of the card.

Penn has yet to win a mixed martial arts (MMA) contest since 2010 when he knocked out Matt Hughes in 21 seconds at UFC 123. His next bout saw him go to a Majority Draw with Jon Fitch at UFC 127; before going on a four-fight losing streak that spans nearly six years over the likes of Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald, Frankie Edgar, and Yair Rodriguez.

The Hawaiian’s latest Octagon outing saw him suffer a lopsided beatdown to Rodriguez in the main event of UFC Fight Night 103, which ended with a second round knockout via front-kick.

Siver is also on losing streak of his own, having dropped back-to-back losses to UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor and Tatsuya Kawajiri. The 38-year-old was knocked out by ‘The Notorious One’ in the second round of their meeting back in January of 2015, and dropped a unanimous decision loss to Kawajiri just five months later.

Given both men are at similar points in there careers and are the same age, this match-up makes a lot more sense for the former lightweight and welterweight champ.

UFC legend BJ Penn was all set to make his comeback at UFC 199, until last night’s news of the former lightweight and welterweight champion’s USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) IV violation came out. ‘The Prodigy’ caled it a day after a harrowing loss to Frankie Edgar in their trilogy bout in July 2014, and was an inaugural inductee to the modern era UFC Hall of Fame. Training at Greg Jackson’s with the likes of Jon Jones and Holly Holm, Penn was first matched with Dennis Siver for a featherweight comeback at UFC 199.

After Siver dropped out injured, American Top Team’s Cole Miller stepped in and once again Penn’s return was set. Although featured on the prelims of the June 4 pay-per-view event, it would be a highly anticipated fight for fans of the Hawaiian great.

Penn’s removal from the event was de to an IV violation, so not anywhere near as shady as the other kind of USADA busts we’ve been seeing, but still against the rules. With the weigh-is week 8% check not even in effect yet, it seems Penn’s cut to 145 pounds was just too much without some additional help rehydrating.

That said, it turns out it wasn’t even in a period deemed ‘in competition,’ and that he had the IV administered under the care of a doctor. Check out the former two-weight champion’s official statement on the IV violation from his website:

BJ Penn

“I voluntarily disclosed to USADA that during a non-fight period that I had an IV administered under the care of a doctor. The rule for IV usage had changed since my last fight in the UFC and was unaware of the change and voluntarily disclosed the information to USADA. I had no idea that IV use was banned 365 days a year.  At no time in my career in martial arts have I ever doped and anticipate all test results from USADA will come back clean and will be working with the UFC to get the matter cleared up and return to fight as soon as possible.”

The full list of do’s and dont’s is available for anyone to view on the UFC section of the USADA website. The leader of the anti doping plight in the UFC, Jeff Novitsky, actually points out that IV rehydrating is less effective and more dangerous than just drinking water from a bottle.

Stay tuned.

Injury Roundup: Anderson Silva Out of UFC 198, Dennis Siver Pulled From BJ Penn Fight

(via Getty.)

UFC 198 has just taken a HUGE hit, Nation.

Following his “controversial” decision loss to Michael Bisping at Fight Night 84 in February, former middleweight champion Anderson Silva was booked in a quick turnaround match against Uriah Hall at UFC 198 this weekend. It was an odd, if intriguing matchup from a fan’s perspective, and one that presented an opportunity for two of the UFC’s flashiest strikers to secure a much-needed win.

But now, just three days out from their scheduled meeting, Anderson Silva has been forced off of UFC 198 with one of the more unusual injuries to hit the headlines this year.

Details after the jump.

But now, just three days out from their scheduled meeting, Anderson Silva has been forced off of UFC 198 with one of the more unusual injuries to hit the headlines this year.

Details after the jump.

According to Yahoo, Silva officially withdrew from the card late last night after experiencing severe abdominal pains, which upon further inspection, were revealed “to be consistent with acute cholecystitis” — an inflammation of the galbladder.

Silva was then rushed to the hospital to undergo immediate surgery, which MMAFighting’s Guilherme Cruz ?informs us was a rousing success.

Now facing a 4-6 week recovery, the question now becomes whether Silva will be healthy enough to compete on the UFC 200 card in July. In either case, it seems that UFC will not be seeking a replacement for Uriah Hall.

In somewhat lesser injury news, BJ Penn’s totally-unwanted return fight just took a big hit in the form of his opponent, Dennis Siver, who has been forced out of the bout with an undisclosed injury. With the UFC currently scrambling to find Penn an opponent, an unexpected voice has emerged from the pack in TUF 22 finalist Artem Lobov, who took to Twitter with an interesting proposition:

All things considered, this isn’t the worst fight you could book on short notice. I mean, sure, Lobov is almost a complete non-entity to most MMA fans (and is also a whopping 0-2 in his UFC career), but he’s also a guy who both places entertainment above strategy and stands next to no chance of defeating Penn on even his best day. That’s what Penn’s unretirement is all about, right? Proving that he still has enough left in the tank to compete with *any* UFC fighter, regardless of their proximity to an actual title? He was booked against Siver, after all, who the UFC has been treating like a professional fall guy ever since he tested positive for a testicle-preserving banned substance back at UFC 168. I’m just saying that the UFC should do whatever it has to to avoid another BJ Penn breakdown, and Lobov seems like their best bet.

BJPenn.com was the first to report the news that Siver has suffered an undisclosed injury and had to pull out of the scheduled fight against “The Prodigy” as a result.

As of this writing, there is no word as to whether or not Penn will remain on the card. Penn last fought in 2014, dropping a third fight to former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. He was scheduled to make his Octagon return at UFC 199 against Siver next month. We will keep you posted regarding Penn’s UFC 199 status.

UFC 199 takes place on Sarturday, June 4, 2016 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

It looks as though the injury bug struck a double this week, and it’s only Wednesday…

Following the news that ex-UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was forced off this weekend’s (Saturday May 14, 2016) stacked UFC 198 card, we have more bad news for fans of former pound-for-pound kings. This time it’s over to UFC 199, and the feature preliminary bout between BJ Penn and Dennis Siver takes a big hit. As confirmed by BJPenn.com, Siver has been forced to pull out of the June 4 fight with ‘The Prodigy’ due to injury.

It will be Penn’s first fight in two years having sat dormant during a brief retirement, which came as no surprise given the brutal nature of his last fight. In an attempt to reinvent himself, BJ took on Frankie Edgar at featherweight, suffering a heart breaking TKO loss and looking awful in the process.

Now the loss of Siver means Penn is currently without an opponent, but unlike the situation with UFC 198 and ‘The Spider,’ the promotion has a lot longer to find a replacement.
