In the main event, we will see a bout between two ranked middleweights when Derek Brunson attempts to spoil the streak of rising contender Edmen Shahbazyan. Coming off back to back victories in 2019, Brunson is looking to continue this streak adding Shahbazyan’s name to the list. Shahbazyan who has finished all his victories inside the UFC is coming off a first-round knockout of Brad Tavares in November of 2019. In the co-main event, Joanne Calderwood will take on Jennifer Maia in a women’s flyweight bout to determine the next title challenger to face Valentina Shevchenko.

In the UFC Fight Night 173 main event, we have a crossroads clash between long-time contender Derek Brunson and rising star Edmen Shahbazyan. The winner will move one step close to a shot at the middleweight title. Who will that be? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…
Jordan Ellis: This is a huge step up for Edmen Shahbazyan but one I think he will pass with flying colours. I expect Derek Brunson to be better than we’ve previously seen him against high-level strikers. He will survive early but ultimately get caught by something flashy from Shahbazyan who looks destined for big things.
Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan
Eoin McKenna: I see Edmen staying composed and adding another first-round finish to his catalogue. I’m predicting Brunson to try and take Edmen down and wear him out and Edmen ultimately getting a submission or TKO in the first round.
Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan
Abhinav Kini: Derek Brunson will be his biggest task yet, but I see Edmen Shahbazyan using him as a stepping stone to really enter that title picture at middleweight. He’s undefeated, confident, versatile and has finishes in all but one of his wins. Given how Brunson can get sloppy at times, I predict Shahbazyan getting an early knockout win and really putting the division on notice.
Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan
Brady Briggs: Edmen Shahbazyan is a straight up prodigy, and has already had some incredible performances in the UFC at just 22-years-old. He may be inexperienced at 11-0, while Brunson is 20-7, but in his two most recent victories, he defeated the 23-8 Jack Marshman and the 17-5 Brad Tavares, both of which he stopped before the midway point of round one. He has so many tools at such a young age, but Brunson’s been there and fought the best in the sport for the last eight years. An interesting fact, Brunson has finished 14 of his wins, eleven knockouts and three submissions (all rear naked chokes), but all of his finishes are inside of round one. If his fights go past round one, he usually wins a decision, historically. All that being said, I think Shahbazyan takes it by (T)KO in round one or two.
Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan
Ryan Maccarthy: Israel Adesanya, the Middleweight king went to decision with Brad Tavares. Edmen Shahbazyan beat Tavares in two minutes. He knocked him out cold with a head kick. While i think Brunson is certainly capable of pulling the upset, Shahbazyan is just so calm and relaxed for his age at 22. He definitely needs more experience and all the rest, but I’m really really high on Edmen. I think he has a really bright future and all the makings of a future world champion. Shahbazyan by 2nd round TKO
Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan
Ryan Galloway: I think people are counting Brunson out in this main event fight with Edman Shahbazyan. Bruson is in the top of the division for a reason, his only losses have come to top of the food chain athletes and while Shahbazyan has displayed some impressive abilities it would be hard for me to pick against Brunson in this one. While I don’t see it being the most entertaining fight, I think Brunson’s wrestling ability will show and he will take this one to a decision victory.

Derek Brunson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan
On Saturday night we have a textbook crossroads fight in the main event. In our opinion this fight could go either way but the bookmakers seem to be writing off Brunson who you can find at odds of 5/2 to beat his 22-year-old opponent who is priced at 1/3 to get the victory. Shahbazyan has looked terrific during his UFC career but is taking a considerable step up in opposition in this one. If you’re betting on him, we suggest taking him in the early rounds. Brunson has been stopped three times in the first round against Israel Adesanya, Jacare Souza and Robert Whittaker. Shahbazyan is priced at 6/5 to do the same and we think that is the most likely outcome if Ronda Rousey’s protégé is everything he’s touted to be. If this has come too soon Brunson could edge out a decision win and with odds 13/2 on that happening it may well be worth at least a little bet.
Joanne Calderwood vs. Jennifer Maia
The problem with the women’s flyweight division is they are all so evenly matched (besides the champion Valentina Shevchenko). Calderwood is the number one contender and was in line for a title shot before taking this fight. So, common sense tells you she should be the favourite – which she is at odds of 8/13. But, she’s got a tough night ahead of her this weekend. That’s why we say approach this bout with caution. If you fancy a dabble, we advise betting on the fight to go the distance at 3/10. It’s not going to win you lots of money but seems the safest bet due to the fact neither of these ladies are particularly known for getting finishes.
Vicente Luque vs. Randy Brown
Our big pick for the night is Vicente Luque against Randy Brown. Luque is coming off an impressive win over Niko Price. Whereas Brown has previously lost to Price. While MMA maths isn’t always reliable the bookmakers seem to think it is for this fight and we agree. Luque is 8/15 to win and we suggest adding him to you bet this weekend. If you want to improve your odds pick him to score a knockout win and get odds of 11/5.
Lando Vannata vs. Bobby Green II
This rematch has got everybody excited after Lando Vannata and Bobby Green put on the Fight of the Night at UFC 216 three years ago. In the end the judges scored it a draw but Vannata would’ve won had he not been deducted a point for an illegal knee. We think he will get the decision he should have got last time this Saturday night. He’s the favourite at 8/13 and rightfully so after looking brilliant in his last fight against Yancy Medeiros. Do yourself a favour. Make sure you bet on Lando Vannata this weekend.
Kevin Holland vs. Trevin Giles
Opening the main card, we have Kevin Holland against Trevin Giles. With all due respect to Giles we think he will come up short against Holland on Saturday. Holland has looked good during his UFC run. He’s picked up big wins and scored finishes in a few fights and is 4/9 to get another victory. We advise you to bet on him to finish this one early. Holland has six submission wins on his record and Giles has been tapped twice in his last three fights. So, Holland in round one looks appealing to us at 10/3 as does Holland by submission at 11/5.
Derek Brunson is ready to derail a hype train this weekend. Brunson takes on Edmen Shahbazyan in a middleweight bout that will headline UFC Vegas 5 on Saturday. It will be Shahbazyan’s first event headliner with many propping up the unbeaten 22-year-old to be the next big thing in the sport as well as a […]
Derek Brunson is ready to derail a hype train this weekend.
Brunson takes on Edmen Shahbazyan in a middleweight bout that will headline UFC Vegas 5 on Saturday.
Brunson, however, believes he will be the biggest test of Shahbazyan’s career thus far.
“This is definitely his biggest test to date,” Brunson told MMA Fighting. “He hasn’t faced anyone like me yet. As seasoned, as gritty, a guy that can match him on speed and strength.
“I’ve been around. I’ve fought in the big fights. To this date, definitely his toughest test.”
Brunson Wants To Get Back In Title Picture
It’s hard to argue with Brunson there.
After all, he has faced some of the biggest names in the sport such as Yoel Romero, Jacare Souza and Robert Whittaker to name a few. Not to mention, he carries fight-ending power in his left hand.
And while many are expecting Shahbazyan to use him as a stepping stone, Brunson plans on ending the hype train and getting himself back into title contention.
“It’s a high profile fight,” Brunson said. “Definitely need to go out there and set the tone. This fight can catapult me into another big fight. Where they’re talking him as a potential title challenger, the same thing they were saying about the last guy I fought [Ian Heinisch] and kind of took his hype away from him.
“This guy right here, he’s talking about being the youngest champion. I go out here and beat him up, that takes everything away. He’s got to reset and that puts me back in the picture and people will start talking about me and my title hunt also.”
That said, Brunson does acknowledge Shahbazyan’s talent.
“He’s pretty solid,” Brunson added. “He’s good at what he does. He’s a consistent guy. He likes to come forward, striking based. He’s solid. He’s young, energetic and he hasn’t lost so he’s confident.”
