It’s safe to say this Saturday’s (February 11, 2017) UFC 208 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York has received more than its fair share of criticism from MMA fans and media alike.

After all, the card features the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight title fight, but it doesn’t involve the consensus top women’s featherweight in the world, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino. While the UFC offered Cyborg several chances to participate in the fight, she ultimately turned them down and then failed a USADA drug test, leaving her UFC future in question for now.

The fact that the promotion went on to book a women’s featherweight title bout anyway was (and still is) viewed as a sort of money grab by the UFC to add legitimacy to a card that badly needed it.

Longtime former middleweight champion and MMA legend Anderson Silva was added to the card on somewhat short notice against knockout slugger Derek Brunson, a bout where “The Spider” would seem to have little to gain but everything to lose considering he hasn’t secured an official win since October 2012.

All of that has many fans understandably questioning if they will buy the pay-per-view. Will you?

The UFC is back this Saturday night (February 11, 2017) UFC 208 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with the main event set to decide the first-ever UFC women’s featherweight champion when former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm meets touted striker Germaine de Randamie.

The main card also houses two pivotal bouts in the middleweight division, with decorated longtime former champion Anderson Silva set to take on blitzing knockout striker Derek Brunson in the co-main event. “The Spider” is looking for one more chance to win UFC gold before he retires, but his friend and training partner Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will also look to continue his arduous quest towards a title shot of his own when he meets veteran Tim Boestch.

Overall, a new division will find its first direction and one of the UFC’s most revered will see some things mixed up towards the top as well, making this weekend’s event from Brooklyn a unique one.

‘The Spider’ has his eyes set on gold once again – Oscar gold that is.

Ahead of his scheduled co-main event meeting with Derek Brunson at UFC 208 live on pay-per-view (PPV) next month (Sat. February 11, 2017), Anderson Silva recently spoke to Combate (via Bloody Elbow) and revealed that he has aspirations to take the film industry by storm next. The former UFC middleweight king said he has a few auditions lined up in Hollywood, and has even sold a script for a TV show to Netflix:

“My biggest dream, right now, is to maybe win an Oscar,” Silva said. “I got some auditions to do in Hollywood. I wrote a script for a series and Netflix bought it, thank God. I got other projects apart from fighting. It was always my dream to become an action movie actor. I have been studying that for a while and now things are finally happening.”

When prodded for more information regarding his script Silva admitted the show has yet to be named, but he has been working on the project for quite some time now while simultaneously juggling the life of a professional athlete:

“It’s an action show, but it has nothing to do with fighting,” Silva said. “It doesn’t have a name yet, we’re still adapting it to script and we’ll settle on a name once it’s all done. I had to stop for awhile, but I’m always working on it, you know, it’s annoying. I’m always writing, putting ideas on paper, before I go to bed and after I wake up.”

After conquering the UFC’s middleweight division for seven years during his heyday, could Silva be the next big thing for the action film industry following the conclusion of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career?

Anderson Silva Praises ‘Dynamic’ Opponent Derek Brunson

Former UFC 185-pound champ Anderson Silva is set to make his Octagon return next month (Saturday, February 11, 2017) when he takes on No. 8-ranked Derek Brunson in the co-main event of UFC 208 live on pay-per-view (PPV).

Silva recently spoke to Sportv (via Bloody Elbowto discuss his upcoming match-up with Brunson, stating he needs to be very careful inside the Octagon against his ‘dynamic’ adversary:

“He’s very young and that helps a lot. But we don’t usually focus on an opponent’s strong suits, we look for their weak spots. We need to be very careful around him, because he’s so dynamic. He has very good wrestling, so we are training a lot of ground techniques and we are working on what I do best. Footwork, movement and using my experience.

“My patience and timing will help me focus on my specialty, which is my striking. It’ll be a very interesting fight to test everything we have been drilling and training over the years. He’s so dynamic and never stands still.”

Silva comes off of a unanimous decision loss to current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 this past July, marking ‘The Spider’s’ fourth consecutive loss. Silva’s January 2015 win over Nick Diaz was overturned to a No Contest after the Brazilian tested positive for a banned substance following the bout.

‘The Spider’s’ last victory came in a light heavyweight contest against the now-retired Stephan Bonnar in October of 2012, when he finished the bout with a first round knockout after a nasty knee to the body.

Brunson comes off of a first round knockout loss to Robert Whittaker in November, having his five-fight win streak snapped that stretched back to August of 2014. Prior to his loss to Whittaker, Brunson had finished four of those five wins via first round knockout.

How do you see the bout between Silva and Brunson going down?

Silva and Brunson will meet in the co-main event of UFC 208 live on PPV, from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is set to make his Octagon return, when he takes on No. 8-ranked Derek Brunson at UFC 209.

One man who has been campaigning for a shot at ‘The Spider’ for quite some time, however, is former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi, who tells FOX Sports (via MMA Mania) that the UFC didn’t give him the match-up with the former Brazilian champ because his name isn’t big enough:

“I wanted to fight Anderson (Silva) and the UFC said ‘well you don’t have a big enough name’ but now he’s fighting Derek Brunson,” Mousasi said. “Luke Rockhold is injured but I see him training all the time. Chris Weidman doesn’t pick up his phone. The UFC offered him that fight a couple of times. (Robert) Whittaker wants to go on holiday for seven months. I don’t know what he’s up to. I’m looking for a fight.”

Mousasi is currently on a four-fight win streak over names such as Thales Leites, Thiago Santos, Vitor Belfort, and most recently Uriah Hall. The Dutchman has has finished three of those four wins with a knockout finish and is making a case for a title opportunity down the road.

Is Mousasi vs. Silva a match-up that interests you? And who do you think ‘The Dreamcatcher’ should step into the Octagon with next?
