No. 6-ranked UFC heavyweight Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis apparently announced his retirement in the moments following his fourth-round TKO loss to Mark Hunt in the main event of last night’s (Sat., June 10, 2017) UFC Fight Night 110 from the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, sparking an outpour of mixed responses from fighters and fans alike.

Citing a lingering injury and the fact he would get married soon, Lewis said he simply didn’t know if he could put his family through the ups and downs of fighting any longer.

One fighter who has a sordid past with the hulking heavy hitter clearly did not approve of his decision to retire, however, as Lewis’ former opponent Travis Browne called “The Black Beast” out on Instagram to suggest Lewis had harmed his family and offer the opinion that Lewis had quit due to his lack of heart:

The two fighters’ beef stems from their first match in the main event at February’s UFC Fight Night 105, a fight where Lewis brutally finished Browne after rallying back from an early stretch where he was rocked by a series of vicious body kicks from Browne. Before the card, Lewis was in many headlines blasting Browne for his alleged domestic violence accusations by ex-wife Jenna Renee Webb, allegations which Browne was investigated and later cleared of and was never officially charged with.

Lewis said he had no respect for men who put their hands on women, assuming that Browne was guilty of the serious accusations despite the fact he did not get arrested and was cleared after the investigation. He also called Browne’s fiancee Ronda Rousey, asking where the former UFC’s women’s champion’s “fine ass was at” after stopping Browne.

Apparently Browne caught wind of something similar actually happening to Lewis’ mother, something for which he offered his sympathies and somewhat backhanded condolence. But the main tenet of Browne’s seething post was obviously to suggest that Lewis didn’t have the heart he claimed and had quit versus Hunt.

The once-feared Browne then suggested he and Lewis meet in a rematch, something that obviously will be tough to come by if “The Black Beast” indeed stays retired. “Hapa” is currently riding a vicious downswing where’s he’s lost five out of his last seven bouts, and a rematch with Lewis may be the best rivalry he can generate right now. Just don’t count on Lewis being too keen on ending his retirement for a fighter he’s already stopped.

In a fantastic night of fights, last night’s (Sat., June 10, 2017) UFC Fight Night 110 in New Zealand left much to analyze and discuss. From lighting quick knockouts to fast and slick submissions, the entire card was a stellar offering from top to bottom.

Derek Brunson and Mark Hunt picked up huge wins, while the rest of the main card bouts practically ended in less than a minute, so the action was at an all-time high on Saturday night.

We’ve determined the five biggest takeaways from UFC Fight Night 110, so check them out here:

5. Ion Cutelaba is a potential light heavyweight wrecking machine:

In a division thin on talent, Ion Cutelba’s 22-second knockout over Henrique Da Silva certainly put his name on a short list of light heavyweight prospects.

The Moldovan absolutely blitzed Da Silva and dispatched him with ease. Now sporting a 2-2 record in the UFC and a 13-2  record overall, Cutelaba remains a fighter to watch, and his performance on Saturday was an eye-opening moment for his career.

Paired with Volkan Oezdamer 28-second knockout of Misha Circunov, Cutelaba’s performance on Saturday absolutely puts him in a position for a top ten fight, considering the division has thinned out since the departure of Ryan Bader, Phil Davis, and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

Two of MMA’s heaviest hitters squared off when longtime vet Mark Hunt battled similarly powerful striker Derrick Lewis in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., June 10, 2017) UFC Fight Night 110 from the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

Lewis was on the rise thanks to a recent string of victories and en ever-polarizing presence in the media, while the aging Hunt had dropped two bouts while growing ever more discontented with the UFC as he continued to pursue a lawsuit against them, Dana White, and Brock Lesnar for his controversial UFC 200 defeat.

But that didn’t stop No. 7-ranked Samoan sniper from staying in the contender race in the shallow heavyweight division. In the end, it was Hunt who put on a show for his homeland fans, bludgeoning a spent Lewis with a relentless pressure-based strategy ending via TKO in the fourth round. In an odd twist, Hunt stated he would be fine if the win was the list fight of his highly-entertaining career, while Lewis said he would also be retiring due after the loss, which he claimed was at least partly due to an injury.

Tonight’s (Sat., June 10, 2017) UFC Fight Night 110 is in the books from the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

In the main event, rising outspoken slugger Derrick Lewis met heavyweight legend Mark Hunt in a battle of two of the hardest hitters in the UFC. On the cusp of contender status, Hunt sent “The Black Beast” down the ranking list for the time being when he secured a win by TKO in the fourth following a back-and-forth match. “The Super Samoan” said he would be satisfied if the win was his last bout, an Lewis teased retirement when he said it would most likely be his last fight. Phew.

In the co-main, Derek Brunson ran over judoka Dan Kelly in his backyard, getting back in the win column with a big first-frame stoppage.
