UFC 202 is the scheduled event for the rematch of one of the most entertaining rivalries and fights of 2016. Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor first met by chance at UFC 196 after the lightweight champion of the time fell out injured. ‘RDA’s’ replacement made the most of the 11 days left before the March 5 event, arguably winning the pre-fight trash talking competition. Once the event came around though, few believed Diaz would have the chops on under two weeks notice.

The Stockton bad boy ate everything ‘The Notorious’ could throw at him, and in the second round came back with a vengeance. Tagging a visibly tired McGregor with some stiff 1-2 combos, Diaz smelt blood and went in for the kill. After the Irishman shot for a desperate takedown, his much more skilled opponent on the mat made short work of him. Diaz bashed away on a flailing McGregor, making room under the chin for a tight rear naked choke that forced the tap.

Everything about this fight was just pure entertainment, and Diaz’s explicit post-fight interview is still one of the greatest quotes in MMA history. A rematch was quickly formulated for UFC 200 and then swiftly swapped to UFC 202 on August 20 after a slight paddy between McGregor and the UFC. As well as just the obvious gap in the grappling skills between ‘The Notorious’ and Cesar Gracie black belt Nate Diaz, many have questioned how McGregor will fare against the naturally bigger fighter in the second fight.

Now Diaz knows how to beat McGregor, and that size played a role in the Irishman’s fatigue, it’s possible he’ll cut as much weight as possible to get a bigger size advantage this time around. If the following social media posts are anything to go by, McGregor is trying to come in lean to preserve his cardio, and Diaz is just looking like a heavyweight!

Could it be a completely different fight on August 20? Will McGregor’s cardio be good enough to get revenge, or will Diaz’s sheer size and already insane cardio prove too much again?

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor had a tough time at UFC 196. Facing Nate Diaz in a short notice welterweight battle, the Irishman who’d never been defeated during his promotional run came unstuck. He unloaded some very powerful strikes in the first round, hoping to dispatch Diaz in similar fashion to his previous opponents, but he Stockton bad boy’s chin held up. Heading in to the second round the tide began to turn.

Although bloodied and at that point outstruck, Diaz came out with fire in his heart and hands. Wobbling McGregor with a number of heavy counter strikes, it wasn’t long before the grappler’s prediction came true. Hurt from a stern left hand, ‘The Notorious’ shot in for a highly uncharacteristic takedown. It was easily stuffed by Diaz, and then began the real trouble for McGregor.

Taking full advantage of his massive grappling arsenal, Diaz first took the mount and rained down with punches, before McGregor bucked and gave up his back. Within a split second the arm was well under the chin and locked tight to the other bicep, and Diaz began cutting off the blood supply to the Irish star’s brain. Before napping, ‘The Notorious’ opted to tap and madness ensued from this point onward.

Part of the insanity that’s filled the aftermath of their first fight stemmed from the near-immediate booking of the rematch. McGregor had demanded a do-over at welterweight and the promotion obliged by giving the main event spot at UFC 200 as their date to dance once again. That was a very short lived booking.

As Diaz enjoyed his new found superstar status, McGregor began spiralling towards a fight he could not win, in the form of a standoff with the UFC. Briefly retiring from MMA with a sensational Tweet, then linking himself to a rather satirical boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, ‘The Notorious’ sparked huge debate as to his future in fighting, and his motivation to continue in the UFC. All this time the featherweight belt remained in keep, albeit in an undecided holding.

Conor McGregor rode in to the UFC 196 main event fight with Nate Diaz on the back of a whole lot of hype and expectations. Unfortunately for McGregor and his infamous hordes of loyal fans, it was Nate Diaz on just 11 days notice who would claim the spoils of victory. In one of the wildest moments of 2016 so far, Diaz rocked ‘The Notorious’ and finished him with a second round submission.

The Stockton star was propelled in to the limelight after so many years of toiling in the non-needle mover category, and the featherweight champion was left with some serious reflection of both his performance and grappling skills. In his post fight interview with Joe Rogan, McGregor claimed he was not efficient with his energy, pretty much meaning he emptied the tank in round one looking for that big knockout finish.

All the talk of eating steaks instead of salads before his UFC 196 welterweight clash with Diaz would now come back to haunt McGregor. Had he really thought that when Diaz replaced Rafael dos Anjos he’d have a walk in the park? According to his coach John Kavanagh, as per his new book ‘win or learn’ (transcribed by The 42), McGregor’s loss was a lesson in many ways.

What people seem to forget about this whole thing is that Conor just loves to fight. Everything else — money, belts or fame — is just a bonus. It’s important that people understand that. He puts himself in dangerous, risky situations by accepting late changes of opponent and exploring different weight classes. Who else would do that in the same way he does? He keeps doing it because it’s all just so much fun to him. He takes those chances because he knows he’ll end up regretting it if he doesn’t, irrespective of the consequences. A strategy error in round two was the difference between victory and defeat on this occasion. Nevertheless, the sun still rose the following morning, just as it would have done if he had won.

McGregor’s long time coach reveals what changes they plan on making for the rematch with Diaz at UFC 202 in August. It includes a drastic change in the featherweight champ’s diet…

Video: Conor McGregor vs. BJJ Black Belt At SBG

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor took a big hit at UFC 196 in many ways. Not only did he eat some heavy shots from Nate Diaz during their enthralling welterweight burner before being submitted, ‘The Notorious’ also had a five-year/14 fight unbeaten streak snapped and all against an opponent he was never even meant to face.

Not only did he eat some heavy shots from Nate Diaz during their enthralling welterweight burner before being submitted, ‘The Notorious’ also had a five-year/14 fight unbeaten streak snapped and all against an opponent he was never even meant to face. After Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of their lightweight title clash, McGregor was paired with Diaz on just 11 days notice.

The Irish star talked lot about learning lessons from his first loss under the UFC banner, and without doubt the gap between his and Diaz’s grappling skills would be way up there.

What was unexpected at UFC 196 was when McGregor actually shot for a takedown, effectively sealing his own fate in the second round. A black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Cesar Gracie, Diaz is widely regarded as one of the best grapplers in the sport. Of course the shot was probably more out of desperation than anything else, but it was never going to end any other way given his opponent’s BJJ credentials.

After the failed booking at UFC 200, McGregor and Diaz were once again paired for UFC 202. As August 20 fast approaches, many have raised the question of how the featherweight boss will deal with the Stockton native’s Jiu Jitsu game in the rematch. After all, Diaz’s skills won’t be decaying in any way, so the gap in skill will like stay the same, but arguably there are many ways in which McGregor could strengthen his defenses and knowledge base.

After a failed 155-pound title attempt against Rafael dos Anjos in December of last year, the nine-year UFC/WEC veteran decided he’d try his luck at 170 pounds. Now set to face Patrick Cote at this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 89, Cerrone recently teased a potential move to middleweight in the future.

Cerrone’s willingness to take short notice fights against anyone, anytime saw him compete 12 times in the UFC octagon between January 2013 and December 2015. Wins over Benson Henderson and Eddie Alvarez highlight ‘Cowboy’s’ 16-4 promotional record.

Talking during a live Facebook Q&A this week, Donald Cerrone addressed a number of interesting questions from fans, and also some ‘keyboard warriors.’ First up he made a prediction for the welterweight main event in Ottawa between Rory MacDonald and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson:

“I think Wonderboy is going to win (the main event vs. MacDonald). I think he’s going to take it, I really do, that’s a fight I’d be interested in facing the winner of. I don’t know if I’m going to stay at 170 or go back to 155, but I know I’m going to stay fighting, I love it, it’s what I enjoy doing; kicking ass.”

On Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt at UFC 200 and GSP’s return:

“If Mark (Hunt) gets a hold of him, I think he’s going to put him to sleep. But if Brock (Lesnar) goes out there and wrestles him he’s going to take it to the ground…I also think GSP is going to make a comeback, I hear there’s works for him to come back at 185. Should be fun, I really like him.”

Cerrone also got asked a number of questions about UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, which you can find on the next page.

Joe Rogan Discusses Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2

The past year has seen some serious changes in the landscape of the UFC’s most marketable stars. The promotion had poured money in to UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and former women’s bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey in an attempt to elevate their status and thus bring in solid pay-per-view numbers. It certainly worked as, up until her UFC 193 loss to Holly Holm, Rousey was without a doubt the biggest attraction in the UFC.

As it turned out for both ‘Rowdy’ and ‘The Notorious,’ the walls that had been built by their dominant performances in the octagon and brash antics in the media soon came tumbling down. For Rousey it was the harrowing knockout loss to Holm that sent her in to a spiral of depression and self doubt. She is yet to return to the octagon after her first pro defeat, recently electing for surgery and further postponing the potential UFC comeback.

McGregor’s stumble came in the form of a UFC 196 submission loss to Nate Diaz, one that would halt the promotion’s future plans for a superfight with Rafael dos Anjos or Robbie Lawler and also put the 145-pound title on hold. Opting to request an immediate rematch at UFC 200, at welterweight once again, it wouldn’t be long before the Irish star would go in to his own media meltdown, albeit far less serious than Rousey’s breakdown.

After pulling out of the UFC 200 presser in California, McGregor was taken off the card all together, and proceeded to go full blown ‘Notorious’ with a social media tirade that would last for weeks. Ill-founded rumours of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather would swirl before the announcement of McGregor’s rematch with Nate Diaz was announced at UFC 199.

One man who’s had front row seats for the highs and lows of both McGregor and Rousey is UFC color commentator Joe Rogan. Along with Conor McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz, Rogan gives his opinion on the rematch at UFC 202 and points out where Rousey went wrong in the Holly Holm fight.
