Longtime American Top Team (ATT) coach Din Thomas will be departing the gym.

Thomas — who has notably cornered former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley among others — confirmed the news to MMA Fighting as he looks to train and develop fighters as a head coach.

“I just feel like it’s time for me to move on,” Thomas said. “I was with them for 19 years. My justification is if Tom Brady can leave the Patriots after 20, I can leave ATT after 19. There’s a lot of fighters I want to work with, and I can’t get to them because of my affiliation. I want to be able to have more freedom to work with people and develop different people without having a structure behind me.

“… It was a tough decision for me, because I love ATT – it’s always been my family. It’s just I’m getting older and I don’t want to do it under that format any more. It’s not bad terms, I just want more freedom to do my own thing.”

Thomas used to compete in the UFC where he compiled a 5-4 record. He retired in 2013 and later transitioned to coaching at ATT where he helped the likes of Woodley, Greg Hardy, Gillian Robertson, Antonio Carlos Junior and others.

He now plans to work on an online MMA program and will eventually add clients to his roster. It’s a big responsibility, but Thomas is prepared for it.

“If they don’t get better, that’s my fault, and I take responsibility for that,” he added. “If they get better, I did my job correctly. I’m not afraid of that responsibility.”

Dana White was left bemused by the events that had transpired in Greg Hardy’s fight with Ben Sosoli at UFC Boston.

Hardy used an inhaler in between the second and third round of his UFC Boston heavyweight encounter. He claimed it was approved by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

However, the use of an inhaler is still illegal as the UFC announced afterward that his unanimous decision win would be overturned to a no contest.

So what were White’s thoughts?

“Yeah, it was crazy,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “…When the fight was over, I went over to [Greg Hardy’s coach] Din Thomas and said, ‘what the f*ck are you doing? How are you using an inhaler?’ And he said ‘the commissioner said we could.’

“What commissioner? When? So my team started to jump into it, try to figure out what happened, what was going on.”

Although White acknowledged that Hardy was given permission, he was particularly displeased with Thomas — who he is close friends with — for not knowing that an inhaler would be illegal:

“I don’t even know what to say,” he added. “First of all, Din Thomas. I mean, come on Din. You’ve been in this game forever. You know what I mean? His corner, they got to know you can’t use an inhaler in the corner.

“They should know that. It shouldn’t even be a question. You can drink water, gatorade in some states. I don’t know.”

What did you make of the inhaler incident?

There’s no doubt that Greg Hardy has the athletic gifts to be successful in the UFC.

The ex-NFL defensive lineman has shown crushing knockout power in the early stages of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. Hardy has been training with the American Top Team (ATT) gym in Florida. Coach Din Thomas recently spoke to BJPenn.com about Hardy’s potential in the sport. Thomas believes Hardy has all the makings of a future UFC heavyweight champion:

“If you give him enough time, I know he can become UFC champion, but the timing has to be right. There’s a lot more to it. There’s so many moving parts with success in MMA. A lot of it is timing, being in the right place at the right time, winning some key fights, and just having some key moments in those fights, it all has to come together for you.

“That’s going to be difficult for Greg cause those things have to align properly and the fact that he is so green in this sport, I know they’re going to try and push it faster which is going to force him to have to learn at an incredibly fast rate. There may be some things he can’t learn fast enough, that’s the reality of it.

“If you give him enough time, he can be UFC champion but if you push him too early, he could struggle. I know the UFC doesn’t have time to wait for Greg to get better. They have a business to run, so we have to do the best we can to make him as prepared as we can have him for the speed they want to push him.”

Hardy is gearing up for his UFC debut tomorrow night (Sat. January 19, 2019) on ESPN+ 1. The show goes down from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Hardy will be facing Allen Crowder in the co-main event. However, his venture into the UFC has been met with a ton of push-back and criticism.

Also on the card will be UFC strawweight competitor Rachael Ostovich. Ostovich was recently a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. Hardy also has a well documented history of domestic abuse himself. The decision to have Hardy fight on the same card as Ostovich has received a lot of negative response. However, Ostovich has said several times she has no issue with the decision.

In fact, she recently spoke to Hardy ahead of the event, and revealed what she had to say to the former Carolina Panther.
