TJ Dillashaw gave his thoughts and prediction on the upcoming bantamweight title fight between Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz.

Cejudo defends his bantamweight crown against Cruz in the co-main event of UFC 249 on May 9 in Jacksonville, Florida. It’s an intriguing fight mainly because it will mark Cruz’s return to the Octagon for the first time since December 2016 as he looks to become the 135-pound king once again.

Dillashaw has notably faced and lost to both fighters so it’s all the more interesting to hear how he sees the fight playing out. And in somewhat of a surprise, he is going with Cruz.

“I actually think Cruz wins the fight. I think he wins a decision,” Dillashaw told ESPN. “I don’t think Cejudo is all he cracks himself up to be. He’s very good, don’t get me wrong. He’s a great athlete, he’s done some amazing things in the combat world. But I don’t think he’s to the level of what Cruz can show him. It’s gonna be difficult for Cejudo to deal with Cruz’s awkward movement.

“It’s not that Cruz is super technical, he’s just awkward and hard to deal with. Cruz has some huge openings in his game. He’s got a way to be beaten, he definitely does. I just don’t know if Cejudo has the element to do it. The way Cejudo needs to fight Cruz is by not being overly aggressive, don’t chase him. Don’t go guns-a-blazing at the beginning and throwing big shots to try and catch him. I kind of learned that mistake the first couple rounds when I was trying to knock Cruz’s head off. And then I beat him up the last few rounds. Cody Garbrandt showed that, too. Cruz put himself out of position, because he does it nonstop. Cruz puts himself way out of position all the time, but he’s playing this cat-and-mouse game where he gets you to bite and then he takes advantage of it.”

In the end, Dillashaw believes Cruz’s years of experience along with his scrambling ability and cardio will be enough to become a three-time UFC bantamweight champion.

“I don’t know how well Cejudo will be able to deal with it,” Dillashaw added. “I think with Cruz’s cardio and his experience, he outpoints Cejudo. Cejudo can beat him. I just don’t think he will. I think Cruz is gonna edge him out. I think MMA wrestling is a completely different sport. Cejudo is the better wrestler. But MMA wrestling is a whole sport on its own.

“I think the distance control that Cruz has is going to be one of Cejudo’s biggest challenges. He’s not gonna be able to get a hold of Cruz. If he does, he isn’t gonna be able to hold him down. It’s not like Cejudo is a jiu-jitsu expert where he’s gonna take advantage of Cruz giving him his back. Because Cruz gives up his back constantly when he gets taken down, but he uses it to get back to his feet. I think Cruz’s scrambling ability and his MMA wrestling will be an advantage for him, too.”

Marlon Moraes: Dominick Cruz Getting Title Shot Makes More Sense Than Jose Aldo

Marlon Moraes has no problem with Dominick Cruz getting the next bantamweight title shot.

Cruz is set to challenge Henry Cejudo in the co-main event of UFC 249 on May 9. It will be the former champion’s first outing since losing his title back in December 2016. Many have since questioned and criticized the UFC for allowing Cruz to skip more deserving contenders with Dana White recently defending the decision.

But when it comes to Moraes, he can’t be too mad at Cruz getting the shot. After all, he has a history with the division unlike a certain Jose Aldo.

“To be honest with you, it bothered me less than seeing Aldo get a title shot because Dominick Cruz has a story in the division,” Moraes told MMA Junkie. “Dominick Cruz won the belt, and he had so many problems with injuries.

“I’m a big fan of Dominick Cruz, too. I see him. I see the passion he has for the sport, and he just can’t get going. He just can’t stay healthy. He keeps getting hurt, and when you hear something like that, you can’t get mad, you know? I’m not mad at all, man.”

Before Cruz received the opportunity, Aldo was slated to face Cejudo for the title until travel restrictions prevented him from competing. That was despite Aldo losing a closely-contested split decision to Moraes in his bantamweight debut back in December as well as being on a two-fight losing streak.

Moraes wasn’t pleased with Aldo getting the shot at the time, but sees no problem with Cruz getting one more opportunity to regain his title amid all his injury problems over the years.

“The guy deserves to fight,” Moraes added of Cruz. “He’s one of the best ever to step into that octagon in the 135-pound division, and I heard Petr Yan couldn’t get a visa to fight. He was one of the options, too, so why not? Why not give it to Dominick Cruz? He’s such a big name. I think it’s good for the division to have him back, and hopefully he can stay healthy, but if he can’t stay healthy, man, give this guy one more opportunity. Let’s see what he can do.”

Cruz Cejudo

Dominick Cruz will skip the line of contenders to face Henry Cejudo for the bantamweight title. And UFC president Dana White has no problem with that.

Cruz meets Cejudo in the co-main event of UFC 249 which takes place May 9 in Jacksonville, Florida. The booking has receiving plenty of criticism given that Cruz is coming off a bantamweight title defeat and hasn’t competed since December 2016.

However, White defended the title fight as he believes “The Dominator” still reigns as one of the best fighters in the world.

“He’s still one of the best in the world,” White told ESPN in a recent Instagram Live session. “He’s one of the best in the world. He’s a guy who has been incredibly plagued with injuries throughout his career. But he’s still looked at as one of the best in the world.”

Criticism has also gone Cejudo’s way. It has become a recurring theme that the current bantamweight king has only called out and campaigned to face big names on losing streaks.

Even before Cruz, “Triple C” was initially scheduled to face Jose Aldo at UFC 250 until government restrictions ruled out the Brazilian. Meanwhile, more deserving contenders on winning streaks such as Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling are left on the sidelines.

But White doesn’t believe Cejudo is ducking any of them. In fact, he is understanding of why the champion wants to face the big names.

“For a guy like Henry Cejudo, who literally is willing to fight anybody and wants to fight all the best – you want Jose Aldo, the Dominick Cruz’s and those kind of guys on your resume,” White added.
