At first, Cody Garbrandt was all smiles when he managed to make weight for his big bantamweight title fight tomorrow night (Dec. 30) against champion Dominick Cruz. Things turned sour quickly when a commotion was heard in the backstage area.

That commotion ended up being an altercation between “No Love” and Cruz’s training partner Jeremy Stephens. Stephens is a seasoned mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran who currently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) featherweight division.

MMAFighting reached out to both men for comments. The fighters responded and you can see what Stephens had to say below:

“So I turn my back and I take a couple steps and then I hear someone say, ‘Yeah, you better keep walking. You and your whole team blah blah blah.’ I look over, and it’s Cody approaching me. He’s coming at me fast, like he’s going to push me. I just put my arm out, and the security guy picks me up, moves me out. Cody starts getting all hot-headed, screaming, trying to throw his shirt off, trying to fight me. I’m laughing. Like, ‘Hey bro, you better get serious, you’re fighting my teammate tomorrow.’ I’m here for Dom. Then they broke it up.”

Garbrandt gave his side of the story and he didn’t mince words.

“Dude’s a b*tch and scratched my neck with his b*tch nails. He is lucky I had my hands full and was taken from behind by a few people. Cruz knows he can’t beat me so he brings his self-proclaimed savage in and hype man.”

The feud between Team Alpha Male and Cruz has spilled into something far more personal with Garbrandt involved. “No Love” threatened to walk into “The Dominator’s” interview room after the champion told the challenger he need to “shut his girlfriend” up when talking about the fight business.

Weigh-In Confrontation: Garbrandt Says Stephens Scratched Him With His ‘B*tch Nails’

Building on a day already full of drama and intrigue due to Ronda Rousey’s brief yet powerful appearance at the UFC 207 early weigh-ins followed by Johny Hendricks missing weight yet again, a backstage altercation between bantamweight title challenger Cody Garbrandt and his opponent Dominick Cruz’ teammate Jeremy Stephens was added to the growing list

Building on a day already full of drama and intrigue due to Ronda Rousey’s brief yet powerful appearance at the UFC 207 early weigh-ins followed by Johny Hendricks missing weight yet again, a backstage altercation between bantamweight title challenger Cody Garbrandt and his opponent Dominick Cruz’ teammate Jeremy Stephens was added to the growing list of headlines from the UFC’s year-ending pay-per-view (PPV) card.

The dust-up reportedly happened after the two fighters had weighed in and were walking out of the venue. Calling the action live, MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani described the scene towards the end of the following weigh-in video:

After it went down, Helwani caught up with Stephens to hear his side of the tale, confirming it did get physical:

“He’s coming at me fast, like he’s going to push me. I just put my arm out and the security guy picks me up, moves me out. Cody starts getting all hot-headed, screaming, trying to throw his shirt off, trying to fight me. I’m laughing. Like, Hey bro, you better get serious, you’re fighting my teammate tomorrow. I’m here for Dom. Then they broke it up. I was just shocked by the whole situation. This dude has got a fight coming up and he’s mad at me. I thought me and him were cordial. I got no problems with him. I’m here to support my teammate.

“I stiff-armed him. We both kinda grabbed each other.”

Garbrandt then texted his side to Helwani, riding Conor McGregor’s coattails with his infamous press conference line he levied at ‘Lil’ Heathen’:

“Dude’s a b*tch and scratched my neck with his b*tch nails. He is lucky I had my hands full and was taken from behind by a few people. Cruz knows he can’t beat me so he brings his self-proclaimed savage in and hype man.

“Like Conor (McGregor) said, who the fook is that guy?”

‘No Love’ certainly has just that for Cruz, and seems the sentiment now extends to the longtime champ’s team as well. But after Garbrandt went off the handles in an interview yesterday, it’s also safe to wonder if the Team Alpha Male knockout artist is getting a bit too heated for his own good.

It hasn’t failed him yet, however. Will it tomorrow night?

UFC 207 Weigh-In Results: Rousey on Weight, Cruz-Garbrandt Camps Clash Backstage

Ronda Rousey was not wasting any time on Thursday morning for the official UFC 207 weigh-in. She was the first to show up.

The former UFC bantamweight champion tipped the scale at 135 on the dot. She did not pose on the scale, she did not smile and she did not stay. She was in and out as quickly as possible.

Amanda Nunes, the reigning champion, was also there early to make the bout official. She weighed 135 on the button as well.

The real drama came from a backstage altercation between the camps of the men’s bantamweight title clash. It occurred while Nunes was on the scale.

Jeremy Stephens, a member of Dominick Cruz’s team, went after challenger Cody Garbrandt, according to his coach Justin Buchholz (per ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto). The situation was quickly diffused. Okamoto also noted that this is the not the first time Garbrandt, or his team, has been involved in a backstage scuffle.

Both title fights are on.

There was no additional drama regarding actual weights in the first hour. Shortly after 1 p.m. ET, Neil Magny made weight, standing in at 171 pounds, leaving only Ray Borg and Johny Hendricks to come to the scale.

Hendricks hit the scale looking worried, and he had reason to be. He weighed 173.5 pounds ahead of his 170-pound contest. He immediately stormed off.

Borg was the final man up. He, too, missed weight by coming in at 129.5 pounds for his 125-pound contest. A rough end to an eventful early weigh-in.
