Al Iaquinta suffered a setback in his quest to regain a lightweight title opportunity earlier this month (Sat. May 4, 2019).

“Ragin” was defeated by Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the main event of UFC Ottawa via unanimous decision. Iaquinta suffered a string of injuries in the bout.

During a recent appearance on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show,” Iaquinta revealed that he broke his nose, fractured his right orbital, and has some deep bruises on his legs (via MMA Junkie):

“I broke my nose, I fractured my (right) orbital bone and had some deep bruising on my legs because of those kicks,” Iaquinta said. “(The bruising from the kicks) was brutal. I’m just finally starting to be able to move around. It took its toll. That won’t happen again, that’s for sure.”

Iaquinta then detailed how he believes he suffered his nose and orbital injuries. The lightweight believes a stiff jab from Cerrone may have broken his nose, and a shot in the third or fourth round nailed him in the eye:

“He hit me with a stiff jab that I don’t know if it broke my nose, it cut my nose open,” Iaquinta said. “He hit me with a bunch of shots so it could have been any one, he did cut me open; that could’ve been the one.

I think it was somewhere in the third round where he caught me in the eye, the third or the fourth round. It definitely affected my vision, and it definitely was something tough to fight through. But it is what it is. I train to be in those situations.”

In the end, Iaquinta has no excuses for his loss, crediting the veteran Cerrone, and admitting “Cowboy” “beat the sh*t” out of him:

“I had every opportunity to win the fight, and I should’ve, but I didn’t,” Iaquinta said. “He beat the (expletive) out of me the way a veteran gets it done. He’s good, man. He’s good.”

UFC 238 is less than two weeks away, and while there are two title fights on the card, it’s fair to say fans are looking forward to Tony Ferguson vs. Donald Cerrone more than anything.

Fittingly dubbed as “The People’s Main Event,” Ferguson and Cerrone will collide at the United Center in Chicago on June 8. The winner of the bout will ideally challenge the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier’s lightweight title fight.

Ferguson, of course, is on an 11-fight winning streak with finishes in six of his last eight fights. As for Cerrone, he has won four of his last five fights, most recently dominating Al Iaquinta at UFC Ottawa earlier this month.

While “Cowboy” is a betting underdog against Ferguson, many feel he is still capable of finishing “El Cucuy” thanks to his striking prowess.

If you needed any more convincing, just watch his devastating combo on Rick Story that eventually led to a TKO win back in 2016. If you’ve already seen it, there’s no harm in watching it again either.

You can watch the whole fight courtesy of the UFC’s official channel while it’s up:

Tony Ferguson is set for his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon in two weeks (Sat. June 8, 2019).

He’ll be facing fellow fan-favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at the UFC 228 pay-per-view (PPV). The action goes down from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Crazy enough, Ferguson vs. Cerrone isn’t even in a headliner or co-headliner role.

The PPV is co-headlined by a women’s flyweight title fight between Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Eye. Headlining the card is a bout for the vacant 135-pound title between flyweight champ Henry Cejudo and Marlon Moraes. However, Ferguson vs. Cerrone is being touted as the people’s main event of the card.

As we prepare for the return of “El Cucuy,” check out one of his best fights to date. Watch the latest “Free Fight” from the UFC’s YouTube channel, as Tony Ferguson goes to war with Anthony Pettis in the co-main event of UFC 229. The pair put on an all-out bloodbath of a war, which lasted into the second round.

However, Pettis broke his hand in the second round, and couldn’t get off the stool for the third. As a result, Ferguson was awarded the TKO victory. Despite the underwhelming finish, the bout took home Fight Of The Night, and rightfully so.

Donald Cerrone: Fighting Someone Like Me Is ‘Super Dangerous’ For Tony Ferguson

Donald Cerrone and Tony Ferguson have both agreed to take a short-notice fight against one another at UFC 238.

The pay-per-view (PPV) goes down on June 8 from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. It’s headlined by two title fights; the first being a bantamweight title bout between 125-pound champ Henry Cejudo and Marlon Moraes, and a women’s flyweight title bout between defending champion Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Eye.

However, the massive fan-favorite match-up between Ferguson and Cerrone is being touted as the people’s main event. Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Cerrone discussed taking the fight with “El Cucuy” on such short notice. Of course, “Cowboy” has no issue ever taking short-notice fights, but can’t say the same about Ferguson.

The ex-interim lightweight champ is on an 11-fight win streak at the moment, and believes he deserves a title shot. Cerrone said it took Ferguson a while to sign the bout agreement, and he thinks he knows why:

“I don’t think he wanted to have to fight again other than a title fight,” Cerrone said. “I think he believes he deserves a shot, so for him fighting someone like me is super dangerous.

Why would he want to put himself at risk of (losing) a title shot? Especially fighting a (expletive) killer. But I don’t give a (expletive). That’s the difference between me. I’ll fight anybody. So I’ve got to beat them all anyway.”

Cerrone has had a first-hand look at what Ferguson is capable of inside the Octagon. His good friend and training partner Lando Vannata faced Ferguson back in July of 2016, nearly knocking Ferguson out after stunning him badly. However, Vanata fell victim to Ferguson’s elite jiu-jitsu game in the second round, being submitted via the former interim champ’s patented D’Arce choke.

From what “Cowboy” saw, Ferguson is simply a high-volume striker, and not at the elite level. Cerrone believes he’ll be just fine against him inside the Octagon:

“I watched him fight Lando (Vannata) my buddy,” Cerrone said. “I know what kind of opponent I’m against. He’s tough as (expletive), he’s very unorthodox, but not a very high-level striker, I don’t think. He’s just high volume. We’ll be all right.”
