Mike Perry Explains Why He Would Fight Donald Cerrone For Free

Perry and Cerrone had a friendship outside of the cage as well.

Mike Perry explains why he feels that he would’ve taken a fight against Donald Cerrone for free at the upcoming UFC Denver event once they step inside of the Octagon.

Perry scored the first decision win of his career when he beat Paul Felder at UFC 226, which marked his latest fight. This win also snapped back-to-back decision losses to Max Griffin and Santiago Ponzinibbio.

Cerrone lost to rising contender Leon Edwards by unanimous decision in the main event of the UFC Singapore event in Kallang, Singapore at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. As a result of this loss, Cerrone is now just 1-4 in his last five fights.

Mike Perry Explains

During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Perry noted that the situation of accepting this fight is not because there is beef between the two former training partners. Instead, it all comes down to business.

“Let’s get this money,” Perry said (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “Let’s go. The guy was kind to me but the UFC does what they want. They want to set up a fight and I figure, s**t, a year or two from now somebody from Jackson-Wink probably gonna be trying to fight me so it is what it is. We fight, The question is, do you want to get this money or not? I fought his *** for free I might as well fight his *** for a hundred grand.

“I posted a picture of it today of me and him at UFC 202 media day. We knew back then that we were gonna fight some day so nothing to it but to do it.”

Title Shot

Perry would later state that if Darren Till beat Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title at the UFC 228 PPV event, then he is more than willing to fight Till next. The reason for that is due to his belief that he can beat Cerrone then he should be in line for a title shot.

“I feel it’s gonna be a crazier version, a bloodier version of the Paul Felder-Mike Perry fight,” Perry concluded. “I think that depends on how I win. If I beat him with a vicious KO, that puts me top-15 and puts me in line for. If Till doesn’t beat Woodley, then when I beat Cerrone we’re looking at a Till-Perry fight, especially after the sparring.

I know they want to see that. And if [Till] does [win], maybe one before the Colby fight or I could jump right to the Colby fight. If we go off of anger issues, Colby Covington is just a little b**ch and I’ll take that fight all day. But Till would be great out of respect and skill.”

UFC Denver (also known as UFC Fight Night 139) is set to take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The main card will air on FOX Sports 1 while the preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

He may be one of the best trash talkers in the sport, but you’ll probably be surprised to see Mike Perry playing nice with Donald Cerrone ahead of UFC Denver.

Perry (12-3) will take on Cerrone (33-11) later this year in Denver, but just a few short months ago these two were training partners at Jackson Wink MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Both men credit each other with helping get ready for their respective fights. But the time for friendship is over – or is it?

Both Perry and Cerrone were in attendance for the 25th Anniversary press conference in Los Angeles last week and both fighters are keeping it classy ahead of their anticipated fight:

“People say ‘Cowboy’ does his best when he’s friendly with you, and if you show it in return, he’s going to take you out,” Perry said. “Well, I always want the best out of my opponents.

“There’s not going to be any confusion,” Cerrone said. “He’s definitely going to meet me in the middle and throw the f**k down. I can’t wait.”

Perry joked that he was concerned “Cowboy” may try to take him down and make it a wrestle-fest:

“I don’t know, I saw a picture of ‘Cowboy’ in his gi, man,” Perry said. “I think he’s going to try and come and take me down and make it a boring fight. But there’s no way that’s going to happen. We’re going to put on a hell of a show.”

Two big fights have been set for UFC Denver that involves fan favorites, Donald Cerrone and Frankie Edgar.

It was recently announced that a featherweight showdown between Edgar and Chan Sung Jung will headline this upcoming fight night event that will be put on by the Las Vegas-based promotion and also, a barnburner of a welterweight bout between Cerrone and Mike Perry has been confirmed as well by UFC President Dana White on Friday night.

It’s been a wild year for the former UFC lightweight champion, to say the least as he was supposed to challenge Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 222 but had to put out due to injury then, Brian Ortega scored a big victory over him in the co-main event of UFC 222 event that went down March 3, 2018, on pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Edgar was last seen in the Octagon when he scored a unanimous decision win over Cub Swanson back in April at the UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs. Lee event.

On the flip side, Jung, who is a former title contender, has been inactive in recent years with just one fight since challenging then-champion Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in August 2013 as he scored a KO win over Dennis Bermudez in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 104 headliner in his latest fight.

Cerrone lost to rising contender Leon Edwards by unanimous decision in the main event of the UFC Singapore event in Kallang, Singapore at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and as a result of this loss, Cerrone is now just 1-4 in his last five fights.

Perry, on the other hand, scored the first decision win of his career when he beat Paul Felder at UFC 226, which snapped back-to-back decision losses to Max Griffin and Santiago Ponzinibbio.

UFC Denver (also known as UFC Fight Night 139) is set to take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado with the main card airing on FOX Sports 1 while the preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. As of this writing, no other bouts have been confirmed for this show.
