Joe Lauzon had a “gut feeling” that his fight with Donald Cerrone wasn’t going to happen at UFC 274.
Lauzon and Cerrone were slated to compete in lightweight action on the main card of the pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. However, hours before the event was to get underway, Cerrone was forced to pull out of the fight due to a non-COVID-related illness.
It was later revealed that Cerrone had a very bad bout of food poisoning that was not allowing him to fight. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Lauzon opened up on the frustration of not being able to fight after putting in the work of a hard training camp.
He also revealed that, oddly enough, he had a funny feeling leading up to the fight that it was never going to happen.
“For two days I kept saying, I had this gut feeling that the fight’s not gonna happen. I’ve never felt like this before ever,” Lauzon said. “I feel like it’s the stupidest thing, I know Cowboy would show up with a broken leg and fight with a broken leg, but I get this weird gut feeling that the fight is not gonna happen.”
Lauzon revealed that his coach woke him up from a nap the afternoon of the event, letting him know the bad news. At 37-years-old, Lauzon has admitted that he’s winding down in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, and doesn’t have many fights left. In fact, this fight against Cerrone likely could’ve been his last.
When asked if he plans to fight again, Lauzon said he’s undecided, but he’d hate for his career to end on this note.
“I don’t know. I have no idea. How sh*tty is it to have it go out like that, though?” Lauzon asked.
Fortunately, it has since been revealed that the Cerrone/Lauzon bout has been rescheduled for June 18 in August, Texas. Let’s hope that Lauzon’s gut feeling does not re-emerge this time out.

Longtime UFC veteran Donald Cerrone only has two more fights left before he hangs it up for good.
Cerrone was initially slated to meet fellow longtime UFC veteran Joe Lauzon this past weekend at UFC 274. However, due to a bad bout of food poisoning, “Cowboy” was forced to pull out of the fight on short notice.
“Cowboy” was very disappointed about having to pull from the contest, taking to Instagram to comment on the situation. He noted that he’s heartbroken about how things played out and explained that he only pulled out because he absolutely had to.
“My heart is broken and torn,” Cerrone said. “I can’t believe I had to make that call. If you know me, you know I only pulled out because I had to.
“Thank you for the UFC and the medical division for helping me as far as we could, try and make that buzzer, but we just couldn’t get it.”
The former lightweight title challenger continued on by revealing that he doesn’t plan on fighting much longer. Cerrone said he wants to get 50 fights under his belt with Zuffa before finally walking away from the sport. Currently, Cerrone has 48 bouts with the company.
“I have 48 fights under Zuffa,” Cerrone said. “I am saddened that I couldn’t have my 49th, put on a show for you all. My number is 50, gentlemen. I’ll retire when I get 50.
“So I got two more fights left in the UFC. So thank you, Dana White. Thank you, Joe Lauzon. Thank you for understanding and not taking that fight with an ill, sick ‘Cowboy.’
“I wouldn’t want to fight that guy. You want a strong, healthy motherf*cker. So, we’ll meet again. Like I said, ‘Cowboy’s’ got two more fights under Zuffa.
“I want 50 fights and then I’m bowing out, and I’m out of here, boys. I’ll be back stronger than ever and ready to take on the world.”
Cerrone has been competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) since 2006. After making a name for himself in the WEC, he continued his fan-friendly style into the UFC. Since making his UFC debut in 2011, “Cowboy” has become a household name to MMA fans.
Throughout his run with the promotion, Cerrone has put together several impressive runs in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, including a shot at the 155-pound title back in 2015 where he, unfortunately, came up short.
Now, it looks like Donald Cerrone is just about ready to finally walk away from the sport after 16 years and spend more time with his family.

Donald Cerrone is game for a fight against Kevin Holland at welterweight, after his fight with Joe Lauzon.
Holland made his welterweight debut against Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira at UFC 272, and ended up finishing the fight in the second round via TKO. Holland made the move from middleweight to welterweight after struggling against the bigger opponents.
After the win over Oliveira, Holland turned his sights to another ‘Cowboy’.
“Honestly, I don’t know exactly who I want next. I just took out one ‘Cowboy,’ I’d hate to call out another but it’s whatever the world wants, you know what I mean? I give you guys whatever you guys want. You guys want me to fight at ’85, ’70, hell I’ll cut a leg off and go to ’45 if that’s what you guys wanted. I love my people.” Holland said. (H/T BJPenn)
In the post-fight press conferences, Holland walked that callout back. it seems as if he has turned his sights to Daniel Rodriguez.
Donald Cerrone however is down to throw with Kevin Holland
“Kevin, what’s going on? It’s ‘Cowboy.’ I was taking a piss when you called me out but I got Joe May 7th. After that, I’ll come back to ’70 and we can dance baby.”
Cerrone has an upcoming fight against Joe Lauzon at UFC 274. Many thought that the fight between the two would or should be the final fight in their respective careers. Cerrone hasn’t won a fight since 2019 and is 0-5 with 1 ‘no contest’ in his last six fights. Lauzon on the other hand has lost four of is last six fights, but won his most recent over Jonathan Pearce by TKO.
Holland himself was in a must win predicament last night as well. Going into the fight, he was coming off two straight losses and a ‘no contest’ before entering his new division.
Do you want to see Donald Cerrone square off against Kevin Holland? Should Cerrone’s last fight be against Joe Lauzon?

“Cowboy” is currently enjoying a break from the octagon following his second round, TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC on Fox: Shevchenko vs. Peña in January.
Cerrone was enjoying a four-fight win streak at welterweight, which included three “Performance of the Night” awards prior to Masvidal derailing his success following his jump from lightweight.
“Cowboy” is just as renowned for his activity inside the cage as he is for his fighting skills. For example, the fan-favorite fought and beat Benson Henderson on the Conor McGregor v Denis Siver card just 15 days following his defeat over Miles Jury at UFC 182, and fans are keen to see the former WEC title challenger take a break to readjust himself prior to a return to the octagon.
Those calls appear to have been heeded by “Cowboy”, as he recently spoke with TMZ Sports to discuss his downtime at Daytona 500. Cerrone discusses why the UFC is scarier than NASCAR and gives his insight into “topless festivities” and “crazy redneck chicks lying around naked”.
There is winding down, and then there is winding down “Cowboy” style…
