United States President Donald Trump has been no stranger to the mixed martial arts (MMA) scene in 2019.

President Trump has been very vocal about his support for UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington. Also, President Trump was in attendance for UFC 244 inside Madison Square Garden in New York City, which was headlined by the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal, in November.

Last night (Sat. December 7, 2019) former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, who has been very vocal about his support for the President, competed in the main event of Combate Hidalgo against ex-WWE star Alberto El Patron. Ortiz made quick work of El Patron, taking him down and submitting him with ease.

President Trump has now taken to Twitter to congratulate Ortiz on his “big win.”

“Congratulations to @TitoOrtiz on tonight’s huge WIN, a Great American Patriot!”

With his win, Ortiz captured Alberto El Patron’s old WWE Title. The stipulation for the fight had El Patron putting up his WWE gold, while Ortiz put his UFC title up for grabs. However, the former 205-pound champ emerged victorious in his Combate Americas debut. He’ll likely fight under the promotion’s banner again in 2020.

There was a lot of controversy and mixed reviews on whether or not United States President Donald Trump was cheered or booed at UFC 244 last week.

Trump was in attendance to watch the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. According to UFC commentator Joe Rogan on his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan said the crowd “booed the f*ck” out of President Trump.

“They booed the f*ck out of him at the UFC,” Rogan said. “Listen to daddy. I took my f*cking headphones off just to listen, and it was ‘boo!’ Yeah, man. 18,000 people going ‘boo!’”

Rogan’s guest brought up Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., suggesting that there were people chanting “USA” for the President. However, Rogan was very clear that, while there were some cheers, the majority of the reaction for the President was negative.

“Maybe four people behind him were chanting USA,” Rogan said.
“Is that what Donald Jr. said? Listen, if that was your dad, you’d probably say that too. Look, they booed the f*ck out of him. I’m sure some people clapped. I’m sure. But if you had to bet your money on it, like what was the greater percentage?

“Was it boos or claps? It was f*cking boos. Dude, I took my headphones off, I was right there. I could’ve hit him [Trump] with a rock. He was right over there. It was ‘boo!’”

The longtime UFC commentator noted that fans love to boo, and that it’s fun for people to be negative in large crowds at sporting events.

“For sure some people cheered,” Rogan said. “For sure. For sure some people waved at him, saw him wave at people. Look, some people are psyched to see him. If I was in the crowd and I was hammered, I’d be like, ‘What’s up bro?!’ I’d yell at him, I’d say hi, I’d wave at him.

“But, the reaction, when he walked in, was a lot of boos. But that’s just f*cking gonna happen, man. He’s a controversial character. Anywhere he goes he’s gonna get – it’s fun to boo. It’s fun to go ‘f*ck you!’ It’s fun.”

Aside from all of the phenomenal matchups on the card, UFC 244 garnered a lot of attention this past weekend due to the presence of United States President Donald Trump.

Trump was cageside for Saturday night’s big event, and witnessed first hand the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship main event between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. One notable mixed martial arts (MMA) pundit who is a supporter of President Trump, is Tito Ortiz.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Ortiz noted he was happy to see the President in attendance for the Madison Square Garden show.

“It was nice to see the President continue to support our sport not just as the President, but as a businessman before becoming the President,” Ortiz said.

“He’s been a good, close friend of Dana, and I saw an interview of Dana with the President, and me and Dana don’t see eye-to-eye sometimes, but what (Dana) said (about Trump’s importance to the UFC in the early days) was the truth.”

Ortiz is set to return to the cage on December 7 under the Combate Americas banner. He’ll face ex-WWE star Alberto Del Rio, where both men will put up their respective historic titles for grabs. Del Rio will put up his old WWE Title, while Ortiz will put up his UFC Championship.

As for his support of Trump, Ortiz has been a supporter since his appearance on “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2005, which Trump used to host.

“I think being the headliner at Trump Taj Mahal gave him the idea of mixed martial arts and of Tito Ortiz, because in 2005 I did the ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’” Ortiz said.

“He gave me the opportunity to show what the hard work of being an apprentice is. He gave me the opportunity to be on his show asking questions of business, and I did that. I’m thankful for that. I was able to raise over $100,000 for my charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.”

Earlier this week it was reported that current United States President Donald Trump will be in attendance for UFC 244 this weekend in New York City, to witness the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship main event between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.

TMZ Sports recently caught up with Masvidal to get his thoughts on President Trump showing up to watch his fight. Masvidal noted, no matter your political views, it’s an honor to have a sitting President Of The United States attend your fight.

“No matter what your political views on him, it’s not every fighter that can say, ‘Hey, the President is showing up to my fight.’ You know? So that’s humbling in of itself,” Masvidal said. “Especially when other fighters are out there trying os hard, ‘Hey Mr. President! Look at me!’

“The President won’t even go to their fights, look at them or acknowledge them. So to them haters or them dudes that are all up in the sauce, trying to get that, let your talents speak for themselves.”

As we’ve noted, President Trump has quite a history with the mixed martial arts (MMA) scene. He was inducted into the New Jersey State Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2013, and is good friends with UFC president Dana White. Trump allowed a pair of UFC events to go down from his Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City back in 2001 when the UFC had difficulties booking venues.
