Heads Up: Parisyan, McCorkle, Beerbohm, Fickett, Buentello, Schoonover and Denny Are Fighting This Weekend in Texas

If you’re looking for an MMA fix to get you through until UFC 145, Worldwide Mixed Martial Arts is holding its inaugural show on Saturday in El Paso, Texas.

The promotion put together the pretty slick looking promo above for its McCorkle vs. Heden: Fighting For A Better World event that will see a portion of the proceeds from the show donated to the Wounded Warriors project.

In the main and co-main event of the evening, former UFC heavyweight Sean McCorkle will take on a somewhat unknown fighter by the name of Brian Heden and onetime UFC welterweight contender Karo Parisyan will face King of the Cage, EliteXC and MFC vet Thomas “Wildman” Denny. The event will be available for rent via pay-per-view.

During the promo, clips were shown of Parisyan’s first fight — a bare-knuckle scrap he had in Mexico when he was 14 against a 20-something local champion.

It would be a real shame if you only remembered ONE FC 2 for the freak show that was Bob Sapp vs. Rolles Gracie. As is too often the case when events only get remembered for the freak show fight(s) that they hosted, the rest of the card had some legitimately entertaining fights. Four out of five of the main card’s bouts ended in submission, with Felipe Enomoto, Bae Young Kwon and Gustavo Falciroli all securing rear-naked chokes against their opponents. While Enomoto vs. Laursen may have been the most entertaining of the three, Bae Young Kwon’s victory came the earliest, securing the choke only fifty six seconds into the fight. Likewise, Gustavo Falciroli picked up a quick submission against Soo Chul Kim, who curiously enough seemed hesitant to stand up with the BJJ blackbelt.

When we last checked in on XFC, Jamie Varner wasted little time crushing local fighter “Ladies Love” Nate Jolly. This time around, at last night’s XFC 16, little had changed. Jamie Varner wasted little time crushing journeyman Drew Fickett, dropping him early and earning the stoppage only forty seconds into the fight. Time to bring in Fancy Pants.

While there were plenty of knockouts from XFC 16, Amaechi Oselukwue delivered the most impressive one. Unorthodox as it was, the straight right he landed after missing with a kick caught Gerardo Julio Gallegos completely by surprise, ending his night in one minute and twenty three seconds. Coincidentally, Nate Jolly was the referee for the fight.

CagePotato.com has learned that a trio of bouts featuring UFC veterans has been added to Worldwide MMA’s debut card in El Paso, Texas.

Karo Parisyan (19-8-4 1 NC) versus Dave Menne (45-16-2), Lyle Beerbohm (16-2) versus Jamie Varner (18-6-1 2 NC) as well as Drew Fickett (41-16) versus Kevin Knabjian (12-6) will all take place at the March 31 event.


(These two bouts alone beat most Strikeforce Challengers events.)

Karo Parisyan (19-8-4 1 NC) versus Dave Menne (45-16-2), Lyle Beerbohm (16-2) versus Jamie Varner (18-6-1 2 NC) as well as Drew Fickett (41-16) versus Kevin Knabjian (12-6) will all take place at the March 31 event.

The inaugural UFC middleweight champion, Menne is 4-1 in his past five bouts. The 37-year-old competed in the Bellator season 7 welterweight grand prix in 2009, but had his tournament hopes dashed by Omar De La Cruz who TKO’ed the veteran in the first round of their semi-final match. He submitted Eric Davila at UWF 1 Huerta vs. War Machine in his last fight in the Lone Star state in November.

Parisyan, who has struggled as of late with three losses in a row in as many bouts had perhaps his most inspired performance in recent years and glimpses of his old self against Canadian prospect Ryan Ford last may at MMA Live 1 in London, Ontario, Canada. After controlling the opening two frames with his judo and wrestling skill, the 29-year-old Armenian got caught with a knee by “The Real Deal” and was deemed unable to continue by the commission doctor when a gash opened up on his brow line as a result. An invitation to train with Georges St-Pierre to help the UFC welterweight champion prepare for his scheduled UFC 143 bout with Nick Diaz was put on hold due to GSP’s knee injury and subsequent surgery, but the former UFC 170-pound contender says he plans on taking a raincheck for his next title defense, presumably against Carlos Condit.

After being dropped by Strikeforce following back-to-back losses to Pat Healy and Shinya Aoki, previously undefeated Beerbohm is looking to right the ship. A win over the former WEC lightweight champion would do just that for “Fancypants.”

Standing in his way of a much-needed win will be Varner, who desperately needs to beat a decent name to rebound from a 2-4 (1 NC) slide in his past seven outings. Although he did pick up a confidence boosting “W” over little known Nate Jolly in his last bout at XFC 14 Resurrection in October following a brief retirement, “The Worm” will be in for a much tougher fight against Beerbohm.

First he’ll have to make it through his match-up with Drew Fickett Friday night at XFC 16 in Tennessee, though.

“Knight Rider” also has a lot to gain by coming out of the fight with Varner unscathed as he’s set to take on an underrated submission specialist in Knabjian, who will be riding a two-fight winning streak into the bout. Fickett, who from April 2010 to June 2011 went undefeated in five fights before losing to Brian Cobb at MFC 30, is hoping to snap a three-fight losing streak with a win over the Chicago native.

A veritable treasure trove of MMA action kicked off with two events last night, MFC 30 and “The Score Fighting Series”. Even if those organizations don’t ring a bell for you, they did line up recognizable names for their cards, and we’ve got the videos of who did what to whom.

At MFC 30, Brian Cobb showed no intimidation when the opening bell rang, but shortly after standing back up from a Drew Fickett takedown, the 18-6 prospect found himself in a world of trouble. Just a minute into the fight, Fickett took Cobb’s back standing, locking up a body triangle and working for his 31st submission when the fight hit the ground. Three and a half minutes and a dozen rear naked choke attempts later, Cobb turned into Fickett’s guard and unloaded a barrage of unanswered punches forcing the ref to halt the bout. To his credit, Fickett did meet all of the criteria needed to challenge an early stoppage, but from the replay it looked like the only thing supporting his bobblehead was the bottom rope.

Former UFC southpaws Pete Spratt and Marcus Davis also locked horns on the HDNet-aired card. Davis showed a lot of movement throughout the fight, landing knees on the inside and shooting for takedowns whenever Spratt looked to tee off. Little damage was meted out when the fight hit the canvas, but the same could be said for the stand-up battle prior to the third round. In the end, Davis had done enough to secure the decision victory.

I can’t find any videos of the Sokoudjou-Boughton and Zaromskis-Mein bouts online, so “The Score” video recap will have to suffice. Did Zaromskis pull off the win? Did Sokoudjou fart his way to victory as predicted? Click play and find out.

MMA Fighting has Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC 30) results of the Brian Cobb vs. Drew Fickett, Marcus Davis vs. Pete Spratt co-headliners as well as the rest of the HDNet-televised event from the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Drew Fickett, who has won five straight via submission, was supposed to fight for the vacant MFC lightweight title on this card until scheduled opponent Hermes Franca was forced out due to serious criminal allegations. One-time Sengoku and UFC competitor Brian Cobb will step in, but the belt will not be on the line.

Former UFC fighter Marcus Davis debuted successfully with the MFC in April, defeating Curtis Demarce via split decision and the 37-year-old will look to string together back-to-back wins when he faces experienced striker Pete Spratt in a welterweight showdown. Davis previously met Spratt in April 2007 at UFC 69 where he submitted Spratt with an achilles lock.

Hermes Franca Charged With Sexual Abuse in Oregon and is Subsequently Released from MFC Contract

According to a report from Sherdog, nine charges were laid this week against Hermes Franca in relation to a sexual assault that took place in Oregon, where the UFC veteran used to live and run his Team Hermes Franca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

The 36-year-old native of Fortaleza, Brazil who was arrested in 2008 for a DUI, flew from Florida, where he now lives and trains to turn himself in on Monday. He is charged with seven counts of sexual abuse in the first degree and two counts of unlawful sexual penetration in the second degree. Franca’s trial is scheduled for July 12 at 9 a.m. in the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City, Oregon. His bail was set at $250,000.

Acting swiftly to the news, Maximum Fighting president Mark Pavelich released a statement today stating that he has terminated Franca’s contract with his organization as a result of the allegations against him. Pavelich also said that he is currently seeking a new opponent to replace him in his upcoming MFC 29 main event lightweight title fight with Drew Fickett, which could mean Antonio McKee might be brought back into the fold to fight for the title he never vacated in the first place.

“Mr. Franca’s legal situation is a matter in the hands of law enforcement officials and soon to be going before the courts and because of that there will not be any further comment on those allegations, but I have taken immediate action to indicate that he is no longer going to be part of my organization. We were informed about his arrest and pending trial, and as of 10:30 a.m. MT today, he has been released, Pavelich said via email. “These are serious allegations that he is facing and I do not want the Maximum Fighting Championship associated in any way with these matters.”
