Dustin Poirier offers to fight Arman Tsarukyan for title amid Islam Makhachev injury

Amid the current uncertainty over the extent of undisputed lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev’s arm injury, former champion, Dustin Poirier remains open to the possibility of taking on fellow American Top Team star, Arman Tsarukyan in an interim title fight next.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, has been sidelined since he submitted the above-mentioned, Poirier back in May at UFC 302, through an undisclosed arm injury – with the extent of the layoff yet to be determined as he sports a supportive arm brace.

Dustin Poirier still unclear on fighting future I'm still unsure about what's next

Initially expected to fight number one ranked contender, Tsarukyan in a title rematch at UFC 308 in October, the promotion are instead now working on an undisputed featherweight title matchup between Ilia Topuria, and Max Holloway for the Abu Dhabi card instead.

And while still weighing up his immediate fighting future off the back of his D’Arce choke loss to pound-for-pound number one, Makhachev, Lafayette striker, Poirier claimed he would be interested in fighting Tsarukyan in an impromptu interim championship pairing.

“I’m supposed to have surgery on my nose in October but like, if I’ve made a decision or something popped up I could push it back or whatever,” Dustin Poirier told MMA Junkie. “I’m just thinking, who is there for me to fight, but I’ve just got to do the 30 days, get in shape and get back on the mats hard, I haven’t been able to grapple.”

“I wonder what they’re [the UFC] are going to do, is Arman (Tsarukyan) gonna continue to wait for Islam (Makhachev)?” Dustin Poirier continued. “I don’t know when Islam’s gonna be back but I saw a thing that said he might have to have surgery so we’ll see, man. The lightweight division has been so crazy over these past years. Yeah for sure [an interim title fight with Tsarukyan] interests me.”

Who would win in a potential matchup: Dustin Poirier or Arman Tsarukyan?

Dustin Poirier and Colby Covington Restaurant Run-In

Restaurant disputes are becoming all too common for Colby Covington. The American had a bad-blood fight against his former friend and training companion Jorge Masvidal several years ago. After the fight, the Cuban-American Masvidal attacked Covington outside of a Miami restaurant and the two settled the issue in court.

Recently, in an interview with Submission Radio, ‘Chaos’ outlined meeting up with ‘The Diamond’ in a restaurant. He explained:

“I crossed paths with him about three months ago at NYY Steakhouse in Coconut Creek casino. I looked at him eye-to-eye and I said, ‘What’s up, b*tch? It’s on-site? Say something. Do something,’ and he just walked out of the restaurant because he knows [what would happen].” [H/t MMA Mania]

Dustin Poirier refutes this version of the events. While speaking to MMA Junkie, ‘The Diamond’ said:

“The dude is such a liar. I’m not even gonna give him the air time. It’s a lie. We ran into each other, yeah, that’s true. The way he said it went down, is completely not true. He wants you to talk about him.”

Neither Porier nor Covington have a bout scheduled in the future.

Dustin Poirier compliments surging Paddy Pimblett 'He’s on the right track'

Turning in one of the most high-profile victories of his UFC tenure over the course of last weekend in Manchester, promotional contender, Paddy Pimblett has many a critic, however, don’t expect former interim champion, Dustin Poirier to be one of them.

Pimblett, who cracked the lightweight division top-15 rankings earlier this week, managed to land his sixth consecutive Octagon win at UFC 304, stopping common-foe, King Green with a stunning first round triangle choke in the ‘Rainy City’.

With the victory, Pimblett finally made his way to a ranking in the division, and immediately set out his intentions to take on Brazilian rival, Renato Moicano next – who is currently booked to take on Benoit Saint Denis in a five round bout at UFC Fight Night Paris next month.

As for Poirier, the Lafayette veteran revealed he would likely come to a decision on a mooted retirement from the sport at the beginning of September, having most recently dropped a fifth round D’Arce choke loss to Islam Makhachev in a title clash back in May at UFC 302.

Sharing his thoughts on the continued rise of Pimblett after he traversed past common-opponent, Green, Poirier maintained the outspoken Liverpool grappler was “on the right track”.

“He’s (Paddy Pimblett) another one of those guys whose trajectory is like if he keeps doing what he’s doing – he’s going to be – not that he’s not massive – but he’s on the right track,” Dustin Poirier told MMA Junkie. “Dude, when you talk like that and people like your personality, and you go out there and finish guys, you know, vets and legends like Bobby,”

“Of course, going into the fight, I knew he could win, but to finish Bobby Green like that, I was very surprised,” Poirier continued. “He’s talking the talk, walking the walk, man.”

What do you think is Paddy Pimblett’s ceiling?

Dustin Poirier recently lavished accolades on Paddy Pimblett for his triumphant performance against King Green at UFC 304.

“The Baddy” showcased arguably the most remarkable outing of his UFC career to date this past weekend. He decisively overcame Green with a spectacular triangle-armbar combination in the first round of their lightweight bout, thrilling the home crowd at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Pimblett delivered several potent calf kicks that visibly unsettled “King.” In response, Green attempted a takedown midway through the opening round, but the Brit skillfully countered with a guillotine choke, then seamlessly transitioned into a triangle choke from the bottom. He deftly converted the choke into an armbar, and as Green began to lose consciousness, the referee intervened, halting the fight at 3:22.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Poirier was asked to share his thoughts on Pimblett’s victory at UFC 304. “The Diamond” remarked that the Scouser not only impressed him but also validated his brash personality with a commanding performance against a formidable opponent like Green.

“He’s another one of those guys whose trajectory is like if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s going to be – not that he’s not massive – but he’s on the right track,” Poirier said. “Dude, when you talk like that and people like your personality, and you go out there and finish guys, you know, vets and legends like Bobby. Poirier Opens Up About Return Timeline & Possible Opponent

Poirier may have seen his last chance at undisputed UFC lightweight gold slip away when he faced reigning champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 in June. Despite his valiant efforts, the 35-year-old Louisiana native succumbed to a fifth-round submission.

After the fight, Poirier took to social media to reveal he had sustained a partially torn ACL, a broken nose, and a broken rib during his bout with Makhachev. These injuries could potentially sideline him for an extended period.

During the aforementioned interview, “The Diamond” delved into his potential return schedule. The former UFC interim lightweight champion revealed that if he feels better within the next 30 days, he might consider a comeback later this year. However, he emphasized that this decision would depend on numerous factors.

“I think I could fight at the end of this year. If I felt good after the 30 days and there was a big opportunity, the names – obviously, the opponent matters big time – but where, the timing, and the position on the card and stuff like that, those [things] come into play as well.”

With Makhachev seemingly sidelined by a hand injury, putting his targeted title defense against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 308 on hold, Poirier expressed interest in stepping in.

He found the idea of fighting Tsarukyan for the interim title quite appealing, seeing it as a way to keep the lightweight division active and moving forward.
