Who is the UFC’s most violent fighter? Michael Chandler wants to prove it’s him.
It put him right into the title picture mix with some observers calling for him to fight for the vacant title next. Whether that will happen remains to be seen for now.
However, Chandler is willing to fight other contenders for the time being and is targeting Justin Gaethje next. And the former Bellator lightweight champion is also hoping to cement his status as the new most violent guy in the UFC in the process.
“You had a guy who I tangled with a couple times named Eddie Alvarez, who beat Justin Gaethje whenever they fought for the unofficial title of Most Violent Guy in mixed martial arts…,” Chandler told ESPN.
“I think I’m the new most violent guy in the UFC. If Justin Gaethje wants to prove that, he’s gonna need to step in the Octagon against me.”
Chandler, of course, is referring to Gaethje’s third-round knockout defeat to Alvarez when they fought at UFC 218 back in December 2017. Leading up to that fight, it was dubbed a clash for the most violent fighter in the UFC accolade which Alvarez ended up earning.
And based on Chandler’s performance against Hooker, a fight with Gaethje certainly promises plenty of violence.

Headline: Eddie Alvarez: I’m The Only Man Who Can Beat Khabib
Eddie Alvarez believes he is the only fight that would make sense for Khabib Nurmagomedov to come out of retirement.
29 men have tried to topple the unbeaten and seemingly flawless UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and all have failed. As the speculation of whether or not Khabib will pursue a 30-0 record spreads, in another world, perhaps he would already be 30-0, with Eddie Alvarez being on The Eagle’s victims list.
Back in 2016, Eddie Alvarez was the UFC lightweight champion and there were talks of him potentially defending the title against Khabib. In fact, Khabib claims he was sent a “fake contract” to fight Alvarez as a negotiation ploy to lure Conor McGregor into accepting the terms for the UFC 205 main event against Alvarez. McGregor would later dominate Alvarez to become the “Champ-Champ, and Khabib would virally call “Number-1 Bullshit” on the whole fiasco.
Eddie Alvarez Believes He Is Khabib’s Toughest Matchup
Fast forward to 2021 and now Khabib Nurmagomedov is the lightweight champion, and it is Eddie Alvarez who says that a fight between the two would make sense, even though Alvarez is currently competing for another promotion.
“I’m his only matchup that would make any sense, or give him a terrible time,” Alvarez told Morning Kombat. “There’s one guy that gave him a terrible time in the whole division, and this is just the truth. (Gleison) Tibau gave him a terrible time because Tibau was not overly great at anything.
“Neither am I. I’m not overly great at anything. You say ‘What is Eddie great at?’ I’m not great at anything. I’m not a great striker, I’m not a great wrestler or great jiu-jitsu guy… I’m athletic, I have a strong spirit, a strong heart, and I will fight, I’ll fight to the death.”
Eddie Alvarez currently competes for ONE Championship, a promotion Alvarez has called home since 2019. Alvarez is 1-1 in the promotion and has lost two of his last three fights overall.
How do you think a fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Eddie Alvarez would play out?

Eddie Alvarez still believes he’s the only one who can defeat Khabib Nurmagomedov. Eddie Alvarez still believes he’s the only one who can defeat Khabib Nurmagomedov.
That means “The Eagle” leaves a legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time who never tasted defeat at the highest level of the sport.
Even if he did return to action, it’s hard to see any lightweight causing him trouble. However, ONE Championship’s Alvarez believes he is that fighter.
Having long claimed he was the one to inflict Nurmagomedov’s first defeat, “The Underground King” expanded on why he felt he would be able to do what 29 other men were unable to.
“I’m his only matchup that would make any sense, or give him a terrible time,” Alvarez said in a recent interview (via Middle Easy).
I’m not a great striker, I’m not a great wrestler or great jiu-jitsu guy. I’m athletic, I have a strong spirit, a strong heart, and I will fight, I’ll fight to the death.” Tibau had a great, solid gameplan, and he arguably won that fight. He was able to match Khabib’s strengths, he was able to throw good, straight shots, and he was able to negate a lot of Khabib’s wrestling.
“That’s what I’m able to do against virtually every opponent I’ve fought. Styles make matchup, and anybody who’s in this sport at a high level knows that. I just think that matchup in general would have been something special.”
It’s a fight that could have even happened in 2016 only for McGregor to leapfrog Nurmagomedov and defeat Alvarez on his way to becoming the first simultaneous two-weight champion in the UFC.
But for now, we’ll never know what would have happened if they did collide.
Do you think Alvarez would have posed problems for Nurmagomedov? Or would it be business as usual for the latter?
Eddie Alvarez believes Conor McGregor might not be hungry or motivated enough to fight anymore. McGregor is coming off the first knockout defeat of his career after falling to Dustin Poirier in the second round of their UFC 257 lightweight headliner this past weekend. Eddie Alvarez believes Conor McGregor might not be hungry or motivated enough to fight anymore.
McGregor is coming off the first knockout defeat of his career after falling to Dustin Poirier in the second round of their UFC 257 lightweight headliner this past weekend.
Many have been quick to decipher what went wrong with McGregor — was it really the inactivity as he mentioned? Or was Poirier just the better fighter with the better game plan?
As far as Alvarez — who has faced both fighters — is concerned, it was a case of the latter.
“(Dustin) put a sprint on (Conor),” Alvarez said in a recent interview (via Middle Easy). “Mike Brown had a good game plan of chopping that lead leg down, they chopped that down really well. Then Dustin put that sprint on him that Dustin does so well.
“It caused panic, caused Conor to make mistakes. Conor wasn’t able to stay outside and be creative, and Dustin put him away. He has the power to do that. If anybody deserves the accolades and that kind of victory, and a big crowd, it’s Dustin Poirier. He’s fought the best of the best in that division, one after another, and he deserves that victory.”
However, there is one more factor for Alvarez and that’s whether McGregor is motivated enough to compete anymore.
After all, McGregor doesn’t need to fight — he’s only doing it because he loves it. However, it’s a different story when you have $100 million in the bank according to Alvarez.
That said, the ONE Championship star believes that fighter is still within the Irishman. He just needs to bring him out again.
“I think it’s difficult to fight with $100 million. It’s very simple to fight when you ain’t got a pot to piss in or a window to throw it off,” Alvarez explained. “You almost have to fight. It needs to become part of your character in order to be successful. You need to become a fighter.
“(Conor’s) done that, and he’s showed that he can do that and beat the best guys in the world when he’s hungry and motivated. He’s got to sit down, reevaluate some things, and find that guy again that he was. I think he’s inside of him, but it’s a matter of bringing him out, evoking that ego, evoking that guy again. It’s going to be his own choice and his own desire.”
