On Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, we put Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker together in the virtual same room because Alvarez was looking to find out why a super-fight against Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez wasn’t being made.

Alvarez appeared to be a annoyed that Melendez was calling him out, so he put the pressure on Coker to find out the real story behind this potential co-promotional bout. Watch the segment above.

Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is ranked by most major MMA sites around No. 7, but if you ask his next challenger, Roger Huerta, he’d see you, and raise you.

“I put him in top three for sure,” Huerta told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s The MMA Hour.

Calling in on MMAFighting.com’s now twice-weekly program, Huerta also revealed that he isn’t bothered by the fact that his Bellator 33 fight on Oct. 21 won’t be for the promotion’s belt.

No one can doubt Frankie Edgar anymore.

After Edgar beat B.J. Penn by unanimous decision in April, a lot of people believed that the fight was a fluke, that the judges erred, and that Penn was still the best lightweight in mixed martial arts. But now that Edgar has defeated Penn once again at UFC 118, there’s no room for debate: Edgar is the undisputed champion.

Except that Edgar has one loss on his record, and that one loss is to Gray Maynard, who has been anointed the next challenger to Edgar’s title. Maynard could make a case that he deserves to be considered the top fighter in the division, but unless he makes that case again in the cage, I’m sticking with Edgar at No. 1. The rest of the rankings are below.

Gilbert Melendez did it again this week.

Melendez, the Strikeforce lightweight champion, pointed out that there’s a great fight to be made between himself and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, a fight that both fighters want and that MMA fans across America would mark on their calendars as a can’t-miss. And he pointed out an uncomfortable truth about MMA: A fight like that doesn’t get made just because the fighters and the fans want it. It only gets made if the promoters and the TV people agree to it.

Last month, Bjorn Rebney essentially called out Scott Coker on a FOX Sports Net Bellator broadcast for not returning his call about putting together a co-promotional bout between Eddie Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez.

But on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Coker said he and Rebney have since had preliminary talks about making the champion vs. champion fight.

“We actually talked, probably about a week ago, and we had a nice conversation. It’s the first time I’ve ever spoken to him. [Rebney] seems like a good guy, and I wish him luck in what he’s doing,” Coker said.

“I said, ‘Look, the situation with Gilbert is he broke his hand in his last fight, so he’s out right now. He’s going to be out, probably until the fall. So this is something we can readdress. We are open to fighting other fighters in other leagues.”
