Conor McGregor has big plans for 2020. The Irish star is set to make his return against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January. With a win, after that, McGregor plans on fighting two more times next year.

Many fans are wondering if “Notorious” can return to form. Perhaps, the best version fans have ever seen of McGregor was his 2016 fight against Eddie Alvarez, making his 155-pound debut in the UFC and winning the division title by dominating Eddie Alvarez. Speaking on his podcast, “You’re Welcome,” Chael Sonnen said that version of McGregor is, perhaps, the greatest talent he’s ever seen. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I believe the Conor McGregor that fought Eddie Alvarez to possibly be the greatest talent that I’ve ever seen,” Sonnen said. “Possibly. The way he approached that [with] the pressure that he had on him… It was the biggest gate in MMA history, it stands to this day as the biggest gate in MMA history.

“It was in [Madison Square Garden] in New York for the first time ever. I mean the pressure that was on Conor McGregor. He moved up weight classes, it was champion versus champion… the whole bit going in it. But then the actual performance… Guys, nobody kicks Eddie Alvarez’s ass.

“Nobody has ever kicked Eddie Alvarez’s ass, before or since. It was one of those nights where Conor came out and he just couldn’t miss,” Sonnen continued, praising McGregor. “He just couldn’t miss. Anything he tried, any showboating he performed, any defences or offences he did, he just couldn’t miss.”

McGregor’s win over Alvarez in 2016 is also the last time McGregor has picked up a victory in combat sports competition. Since, he has suffered losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in boxing and Khabib Nurmagomedov in mixed martial arts (MMA).

What do you make of Sonnen calling the version of McGregor that fought Alvarez the greatest talent he’s ever seen?

ONE Championship founder and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, has just announced that Eddie Alvarez has withdrawn from his upcoming bout at ONE: Century.Alvarez was scheduled to meet Dagestan’s Saygid Arslanaliev in the final of the ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix on Oct 12 (US Time).

However, due to an injury to Alvarez, this match up will no longer take place. Alvarez’s withdrawal will disappoint a lot of MMA fans, who were excited to see how he would match up against the seemingly unstoppable force that is Arslanaliev.

Thankfully the ONE matchmakers have been able to pull a rabbit out of their hat with ONE Lightweight World Champion Christan Lee due to step in at the last minute and face Arslanaliev.

Lee was not originally scheduled to be competing at ONE: Century so he will be coming into this bout with an incredibly short training camp. The fact that Lee’s sister ONE Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee will also be in action, no doubt adds an extra layer of interest to this contest.

Lee’s title will not be up for grabs in Tokyo. If Arslanaliev wins, he will be crowned the ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Champion, but the actual lightweight title will still belong to Lee.

ONE: Century is shaping up to be a huge night for the Lee family.

Part 1 of ONE: Century will be broadcast live on TNT on Oct 12 11PM ET

Eddie Alvarez: It’s Going To Take ‘Certain Style’ To Beat Khabib Nurmagomedov

Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez believes it will take a certain style for somebody to inflict defeat on Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“The Eagle” recently defended his lightweight title with a dominant win over Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 this past weekend. It sparked further debates as to who could actually beat him.

Conveniently enough, Alvarez — now at ONE Championship — believes he has that style as he explained below:

“I think it’s going to take a certain style, and if you don’t have that style, there’s a certain style you have to implement to beat him, and I feel like I can implement that style the best in this division, and I don’t know who else could,” Alvarez told MMA Junkie. “When I think about the other competition and the top 10 in the UFC, and the other guys around, I don’t know if they’re able to implement the type of fight that you have to do to beat Khabib.

“The most I can say is I’ve done it before. If you watch the second Michael Chandler fight, and you watch a fight like that where you have a guy who just throws a big punch, tries to run you to the cage, tries to rip you to the ground, and pound you out on the ground, it’s like that’s the style you have to implement on a guy like that to beat him. You can’t stand in front of him. You’ve got to be able to move laterally. You’ve got to be able to shut down his wrestling, and when you do get into wrestling exchanges, you can’t be dominated. You’ve got to have another wrestler who can match his wrestling.”

Alvarez even pointed to Nurmagomedov’s controversial fight with Gleison Tibau in 2012 where many felt the latter had won, especially having stuffed all of the former’s takedown attempts. Instead, Nurmagomedov was awarded the unanimous decision win.

“I don’t necessarily see Khabib as undefeated,” Alvarez added. “I think Gleison Tibau beat Khabib. When I watch that fight back, I feel like Gleison beat him, so there is a style out there, and there is a way to beat him, but right now he’s the champ.”

What do you think of Alvarez’s comments?

Eddie Alvarez Calls ‘Complete Crap’ On Notion That UFC Has The Best Fighters

Eddie Alvarez doesn’t buy into the theory that the best mixed martial artists in the world are all in the UFC.

Alvarez, who currently fights under the ONE Championship banner in Singapore, was once the new kid on the block when he entered the UFC back in 2014. “The Underground King” eventually earned himself a title opportunity, upsetting Rafael dos Anjos to capture the 155-pound throne in July of 2016.

He has since signed with ONE and comes off a Lightweight Grand Prix Semifinal victory over Eduard Folayang, who he defeated via first-round submission. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Alvarez explained why the notion that the UFC has the best fighters in the world is “complete crap.”

“That whole theory is crap that everybody who’s the best is a UFC guy,” Alvarez said. “It’s complete crap because I was the guy who didn’t fight in the UFC. I went there and won the belt. I beat arguably the best lightweight in that history. [Rafael dos Anjos] at the time was killing everyone. Like literally murdering the who’s who. So to go to the UFC, win the belt and be a guy from the outside that never fought there, I’m the guy you’re talking about.

“I wasn’t a UFC fighter per se but I went there and I won the world title. If I could do it, isn’t it true that anybody from the outside could possibly go there and win the title? It’s not arguable. It’s fact. The best fighters in the world, they’re all over and they’re virtually unknown.”

Alvarez is preparing to take on Dagestani BJJ Champion Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev in the ONE Lightweight Grand Prix finale on October 13.

What do you think about Alvarez calling “complete crap” on the idea that the UFC has the best fighters?
