Former UFC lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez has described Bellator as “hood rats” following claims from Patricio Freire that the promotion had offered to help his brother, Patricky Freire, with his camp and other expenses in order to ensure he defeated Alvarez back in 2012.

Alvarez, a former Bellator and UFC lightweight champion, last featured professionally at ONE on TNT 4 in April of this year under the Chatri Sityodtong-led, ONE Championship banner — suffering a unanimous decision defeat against Ok Rae Yoon over the course of three rounds.

The outing came as the Philadelphia native’s fourth under the organization’s banner, following an eight-fight stint with the UFC where he clinched the undisputed lightweight crown against Rafael dos Anjos back in July 2016.

However, the aforenoted former two-weight champion, Patricio Freire spoke with MMA Fighting reporter, Guilherme Cruz, where he made claims that Bellator had offered to help his elder brother, recently minted lightweight champion, Patricky Freire with expenses and his camp to ensure he would beat Alvarez in 2012. 

“Bellator called us to talk and said, ‘It’s Eddie Alvarez’s last fight and he’ll leave the organization and we’re putting (Patricky Freire) to beat him up,” Patricio Freire said. “We’ll help you. To sum it up, it was basically like, ‘We’ll put Patricky to beat up Eddie Alvarez because we know Patricky is a badass and won’t back out, and we’ll help you in your camp, whatever you need.’ Cool, (but) that didn’t happen and Patricky got knocked out.“

Reacting to Freire’s comments, Alvarez explained how he did not miss that period of his life with the promotion, labeling the organization as a “hood rat“.

“Crazy Pitbull (Freire) told these secretes (sic) to the public. …. If fans only knew some of the stuff that happens behind the scenes,” Alvarez tweeted.”Playing hood rat games with a hood rat, winnings (sic) not likely.“

“They (Bellator) didn’t know I had somebody on the inside that told (me) all their moves beforehand,” Alvarez posted. “I don’t miss this time of my life but it helped me navigate the dangerous jungle more effectively. I’m thankful this happened, it almost bankrupted me but I learned. “Understand your enemy as well as yourself and victory is inevitable.”“

Meeting with Freire in a lightweight title-eliminator in 2012, Alvarez stopped the future lightweight titleholder with an opening round, high-kick knockout before stopping now-UFC lightweight contender, Michael Chandler with a split decision to lift the Bellator lightweight crown.

Eddie Alvarez knew he would be in for a battle against Conor McGregor Saturday night at UFC 205.

And while Alvarez was disappointed in the outcome, as he dropped the lightweight title, he was more disappointed in himself for how he fought.

“I fought a bad fight,” Alvarez said (thanks to MMAjunkie for the quotes). “The idea wasn’t to go in there and box and stand in front of him. I didn’t fight a good fight. We started throwing kicks, and the kicks were successful. I would have started throwing more. We didn’t wrestle enough.

“The idea was to go in there and wrestle. Wrestle a guy who likes to box, and I didn’t do that. Not quite sure why I didn’t do that. But I didn’t do it tonight, and I paid for it. He capitalized.”

Alvarez, who became the first-ever fighter to wear gold in the UFC and Bellator MMA when he finished Rafael dos Anjos earlier this year, believes the speed of the new two-division champion was what really bothered him the most.

“It was more speed (that got me),” Alvarez said. “I think I got dropped. The first time I was dropped, I remember being on my butt, and I was like, ‘Wow that was quick. Whatever that was, it was fast.’ I’ve been there before a lot of times in my career. I’ve been dropped. I don’t panic. I get my composure and get right back up. It was more – his speed and timing were very good.”

Islam Makhachev has fiercely defended his perceived right to the next lightweight title shot, dismissing Eddie Alvarez’s claim that Justin Gaethje is more deserving.

With Charles Oliveira set to defend his belt against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 on December 11, the question of who will face the winner has been hotly debated in recent weeks.

If you asked Makhachev, it is without a shadow of a doubt he who is most deserving. And the #4 ranked lightweight has a legitimate claim. Makhachev is currently riding a 9-fight win streak, having recently earned a first-round submission of Dan Hooker at UFC 267.

No more of a cheerleader for Islam’s title shot ambitions can be found than Khabib Nurmagomedov. The former lightweight champ, now coach of Makhachev, recently took to social media to declare that his pupil is far more deserving of a title shot than Gaethje, noting that the American has been finished in three of his last eight fights.

Gaethje, of course, vehemently denied his former Octagon dance partner’s assertion and advanced the argument that his recent losses came to fighters of a caliber far beyond that which Makhachev has faced. With this argument, many fans and pundits, agree, noting that Makhachev is yet to face top-five opposition.

Among those siding with Gaethje has been former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, who recently took to Twitter to defend the American’s record, and assert that even with three recent finishes against his name, he’s still more deserving of being next in line for a shot at the belt.

Islam Makhachev Fires Back At Alvarez, Defends Right To Title Shot

Now, Makhachev has clapped back at Alvarez, absolving himself of blame for his less than star-studded list of recent opponents, claiming that those in the 155-pound division’s top ten have been avoiding him.

“It’s not my fault that I did not fight with ranked opponent, everybody declines to fight with me.  And still, I’m #4 now. Name a single fighter from top 10 who wants to fight me now. UFC had to overpay Hooker to take this fight, It’s slowly turning into boxing,” tweeted Makhachev.

Eddie Alvarez will be watching when two of his former opponents throw down at UFC 268 in Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler will face off, in what appears to be a lightweight title eliminator, in New York this weekend. Ahead of the highly anticipated bout, Alvarez took to Twitter to give his prediction.

“True pick em. Gun to my head I’m leaning Justin because of the leg kicks and the fact Mike doesn’t have a great deal of D, Mike’s easiest path is the ground, He could dominate JG there. But it will stay standing and I’d say the second most violent man gets it done JG KO.”

‘The Underground King’ was the first man to beat Gaethje in professional MMA. ‘The Highlight’ entered his fight with Alvarez with a perfect 18-0 record and was confident of keeping his streak going. On fight night, both men went back-and-forth in one of the best bouts of 2017 before Alvarez things with a picture-perfect knee.

In 2011, Alvarez lost in a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender against Michael Chandler who was able to get the submission win. Two years later Alvarez avenged that defeat via a split decision.

Since then, Alvarez has gone on to win and lose the UFC lightweight title. The 37-year-old is currently competing under the ONE Championship banner and has had a mixed bag of results since joining the Asian MMA promotion.

Alvarez suffered a shock first-round KO loss in his ONE debut at the hands of Timofey Nastyukhin. He then got back in the win column by submitting Eduard Folayang. Alvarez was then disqualified for hitting Iuri Lapicus with illegal strikes to the back of the head, however, that fight result has since been overturned to a no-content. Eddie Alvarez is not deserving of a title shot. However, Angela Lee is willing to look past that as far as her brother Christian is concerned.

Christian is the current ONE lightweight champion with Alvarez recently calling him out.

Christian, however, was dismissive of the callouts given Alvarez has only won once in four ONE outings with his last fight being a decision defeat to Rae Yoon Ok.

However, Christian’s sister Angela acknowledges that it’s the biggest fight that can be made — which is why she isn’t opposed to Alvarez getting a title shot next.

“If you look at Eddie’s record on paper since he joined ONE, it’s not too impressive,” Angela said (via MMA Junkie). “Just looking at what fights he’s had in ONE, you’d think he’s undeserving of a title shot, but given that Eddie comes from a history of being previous UFC champion, being previous Bellator champion, and he has a huge following, and a lot of fans want that fight then I think that would be the only reason for Christian to take the fight against Eddie, is that’s the fight the fans want.

“That’s the fight that’s gonna be the biggest draw. So I don’t think that Christian owes Eddie this title fight, I don’t think Eddie’s deserving of the title fight, but just because it’s in such high demand by the fans that I think, yeah sure, why not? Make it happen.”

Even with Alvarez winless in his last two, it’s hard to deny that him against Lee would be one of the biggest fights the Singapore-based promotion can put out.
