Rebounding from a back-and-forth short notice loss against Drew Dober, uber-prospect, Terrance McKinney returns to the winner’s enclosure to open the main card of UFC Vegas 59 — stopping Torrance native, Erick Gonzalez with a first round standing neck crank at the UFC Apex facility.
Landing prior UFC victories over both Matt Frevola, and Youssef Zalal ahead of his return tonight against Gonzalez, McKinney made relatively short work of the Californian with a series of brutally precise strikes on the feet, however, was briefly rattled himself after Gonzalez landed an overhand strike.
Securing a double-leg takedown, McKinney leapt to the back of Gonzalez as he returned to his feet at the fence, stopping the Californian with a standing neck crank as referee, Chris Tognoni jumped in to call a halt to the matchup.

Ahead of his upcoming Octagon return at UFC Vegas 59 next weekend, highly-touted lightweight finisher, Terrance McKinney plans to send opponent, Erick Gonzalez back to past home, Combate Global – as well as expose the skill level difference between the two.
McKinney, a native of Spokane, made a massive impact in his UFC bow back in June of last year at UFC 263, rushing through Matt Frevola with a stunning first round knockout win in just 7 seconds.
Making his second Octagon walk at the UFC Apex facility, McKinney turned in another hugely impressive victory, this time taking out Fares Ziam in the first round – displaying his grappling chops with a rear-naked choke win.
Replacing Ricky Glenn on just over a week’s notice, McKinney clashed with veteran promotional staple, Drew Dober, rocking and dropping the Colorado native in the first round before suffering a late round TKO loss of his own.
Set to feature on the preliminary card of the UFC’s return to its Apex facility next weekend, McKinney admitted that he was unsure of his opponent, the aforenoted, Gonzalez before the pair’s booking, but insists he will now send the Redondo Beach native back to the Cambell McLaren-led, Combate Global.
“I actually never heard of him (Erick Gonzalez) – but not disrespectfully,” Terrance McKinney told LowKick MMA reporter, Alex Behunin. “(He’s) not someone I was watching– I’m trying to be like the guys at the higher level, so I’m tryna watch the guys at the higher level.”
“But I did study him now, and I seen (sic) he had some good runs in Combate America (Global), but like I said, we’re going to see the difference in skill level. Jim Miller already showed it. And we’re about to show it again. It’s time to send this boy back to Combate Americas.”
Following a pair of quickfire finishes to kick-off his Octagon tenure, Terrance McKinney admitted that he would like to develop his skillset over the course of two rounds, before landing an eventual finish against Gonzalez.
“I wanna win in the second (round) towards the end, either by knockout or submission,” Terrance McKinney explained. “Whatever I see fit, available. But I feel like we’re better in every aspect of fighting. I think he’s just wild and unpredictable, that’s what makes him dangerous. My accuracy is better, my speeds better, my powers better. And I know I can out-wrestle him or out-grapple him if I need to. … I’m trying to be like Charles Oliveira out there.”

UFC lightweight prospects Terrance McKinney and Erick Gonzalez will square off at an August 6th UFC Fight Night as both look to move closer to the rankings.
News of the matchup was first reported by MMA Junkie.
McKinney is coming off of his first UFC loss, albeit on short notice against Drew Dober at UFC Vegas 50. He filled in on days’ notice for Ricky Glenn but would go on to suffer a first-round TKO defeat.
Before that, McKinney earned back-to-back wins in the UFC over Matt Frevola and Fares Ziam. His seven-second knockout over Frevola at UFC 263 is the fastest in UFC lightweight history.
McKinney earned a shot in the UFC following back-to-back wins over Toninho Gavinho and Michael Irizarry Ortiz in LFA. He’s hinted at a run at the title as soon as next year.
McKinney will face another up-and-coming prospect in Gonzalez, who is still searching for his first UFC win after losing his debut to Jim Miller last October. He was supposed to face Devonte Smith at UFC 272 earlier this year before he pulled out with a foot injury.
The August 6th Fight Night event is slated to be headlined by a light heavyweight matchup between Thiago Santos and Jamahal Hill. McKinney/Gonzalez will also be followed up by a welterweight bout between contenders Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal, as reported on Thursday.
A venue and location for the event have yet to be announced.

Snapping a two-fight losing skid, the veteran New Jersey started the second round with a bang, dropping promotional newcomer, Gonzalez with a huge left hook, before stepping in and landing several subsequent ground strikes against the debutante before referee, Marc Smith could come to his rescue.
Jim Miller Eyes Further Octagon History
Lodging his first knockout victory since a UFC 200 stoppage over lightweight icon, Takanori Gomi back in July 2016, Miller, who once outlined intentions to feature at UFC 100, 200, and eventually, 300, appears to have sights fixed on a continued run with the promotion — which he has represented since October 2008.
