And Now He’s Retired: Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos Calls It Quits After Quick TKO Loss to Melvin Manhoef in Rematch

(Santos vs. Manhoef II via João Baptista.)

With an MMA career spanning back 17 years (!) and some 35 (sanctioned) fights, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos has practically done it all. He’s fought under the Strikeforce, Cage Rage, Jungle Fight, Sengoku, and PRIDE banners. He’s competed in Pancrase, fought in a handful of the legendary Vale Tudo matches, and was one of the founding members of Chute Box, the notoriously brutal Brazilian camp of lore. On his resume you will find such recognizable names as Jose Landi-Jons, Mauricio Rua, Nick Diaz, Melvin Manhoef, Yuki Kondo…we could go on.

A fierce striker with an entertainment over all else approach to the sport, “Cyborg” has and always will represent the “old age” of MMA. He was a “fighter’s fighter” if you will, which makes his decision to step away from the sport on his own accord all the more impressive (looking at you, Big Nog). Speaking with Portal do Vale Tudo on Wednesday, Santos stated that his decision to retire was at least partially influenced by the unfavorable treatment he felt he was receiving from the Gringo Fight promotion, where he was last defeated by Melvin Manhoef in their rematch at Gringo Super Fight 10. However, at just 4-6 in his past 10 fights, it’s hard to disagree with Santos’ decision.

We hope retirement treats you well, Cyborg. Lord knows you’ve earned it.
(*raises chalice* *nods*)

Melvin Manhoef vs. Cyborg Santos II Has Been Booked, So Let’s Celebrate By Watching Their First Slugfest [VIDEO]

Melvin Manhoef is so explosive that his leg kicks destroy everything including Melvin Manhoef. Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos is such a fearless badass that he willingly and repeatedly stuck his Elmer Fudd in Cristiane Justino‘s rabbit hole (do not click this link to confirm). So obviously, when these two met at Cage Rage 15 back in 2006 with Manhoef’s light heavyweight title on the line, the result was every bit the epic slugfest that fans had predicted it would be.

For nearly ten minutes, Manhoef and Santos traded heavy leather and heavier kicks and knees, leaving both men gasping for air before the second round even got under way. It wasn’t until a flurry by an exhausted Manhoef finally found its mark that Santos was defeated, marking an insane fight in the Cage Rage books and a ridiculously improbable comeback win for Manhoef.

And now, the two are set to do battle once again (*BRAAAAHM*). MMAFighting is reporting that Santos and Manhoef have agreed to meet in a welterweight contest on April 13 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fight will not only serve as Manhoef’s debut at 170 lbs, but as a title match for the vacant Gringo Super Fight welterweight belt. A prestigious achievement if there ever was one.

Although both guys have fallen on harder times since their original battle — Cyborg has gone 7-7 since and Manhoef 15-9 — there’s simply no way that this fight will leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who have witnessed the mayhem depicted above. I can only pray that we will be able to say the same about Shogun vs. Hendo II come March 24th.

Attention Bachelors: It’s Your Lucky Day; Cris Cyborg is On the Market Again

(See, Gabrielle was right. Dreams CAN come true.)

If you started to give up hope that you would ever stand a chance of marrying a female MMA fighter since Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey are taken and Gina is probably banging busy doing press tours with the cast of Haywire, your Monday is about to get a whole lot better.

Cristiane Santos announced via UOL today that she and her husband Evangelista been living single since December and it sounds like the chances of a reconciliation are about as slim as the odds of testing positive for steroids from a tainted supplement.

Here’s a somewhat confusing translation of her statement about the break-up:

After six years of dedication to the love and happiness of marriage, I would like to inform you that since the month of December 2011 Evangelista Cyborg and I are living our lives separately.

I would like to thank all friends for their words of love and support during this period.

As it may seem hard to never abandon their dreams or discredits in love!

A hug,

Cris

No word on who gets to keep the “Cyborg” name in the divorce, but unless Evangelista has been training stand-up hard four days a week for the past year, our money’s on Cris.

Does anyone else hope Blind Date steps in to find Cris a new mate?

Jordan Mein unleashed a brutal elbow assault on Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos Saturday night, winning a third-round TKO in an impressive striking display.

The fight took place entirely on the feet, including at the end when Mein began pounding on Cyborg with elbows to the face. Although Cyborg didn’t go down, he wasn’t defending himself, and the referee made the right call to step in and stop the fight.

Mein said afterward that he considered it the biggest win of his professional MMA career.

“Very, very satisfying — I’m happy that I finished the fight. That’s what I’m going for every time and it came true,” Mein said. “He was kicking me hard and my legs were sore so I stayed in the pocked and just kept picking away. I hit him with a nice body shot, that hurt him, and then the elbows to finish him.”

Mein is only 21 years old and already has a 23-7 professional MMA record. He’s already good and only going to get better.

Unfortunately, the 33-year-old Cyborg has now lost two in a row and four of his last six, and he’s starting to show signs of aging. Cyborg has been through some tough battles in his MMA career, and Mein just put him through another one.

With Cyborg Injured and Out of July Bout With Paul Daley, Strikeforce Should Give Tyron Woodley His Promised Shot

(Video courtesy of YouTube/MMAHeat)

According to a report by MMAPrime.tv, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos has pulled out of his upcoming bout with Paul Daley due to a shoulder injury, leaving Strikeforce scurrying to find a suitable replacement for the durable Brazilian for the July 30 Fedor vs. Henderson card in Chicago.

If we were the SF matchmaker (no offense, Sean Shelby), we’d already have a new opponent for “Semtex” before we hung up the phone with Cyborg’s camp when we got the call that he was pulling out of the bout.

“Tyron, get training. You got your shot. Daley July 30,” the text would read, to which a “smiley-face” reply would be sent back a few moments later.

Zuffa has yet to confirm the rumor that the Daley-Cyborg bout was for the welterweight title vacated by Nick Diaz’s unceremonious departure to the UFC, but since a Woodley-Daley fight was on the table before Cyborg was shuffled in from a planned bout with Tarec Saffiedene, why not give the undefeated American Top Team prospect his due. Strikeforce has been promising Woodley a shot for a while. Now is the time to deliver.

Strikeforce has been promising Woodley a shot for a while. Now is the time to deliver.

In the interview above that Woodley did with MMAHeat’s Karen Bryant, the 29-year-old Ferguson, Missouri, United States called out Daley, insinuating that the brash Brit striker ducked him by fighting at BAMMA 5 in February instead of taking a fight with him.

“I think realistically I worked my way up from the undercard through the Challengers [Series]. You guys have gotten to see me go through wars. You got to see me knock people out. So I think, realistically, I should be the next in line. Next time the championship bout is offered, I think I should be the one in the cage. I really and truly think that Daley dodged a bullet when he went to fight in BAMMA in London. He didn’t really want to fight me because he really do well with wrestlers,” he explained. “I think that should have been the tier bout before [the Diaz] bout, but I think things happen for a reason. When my time comes, it’s my time.”

Scott Coker agreed that Woodley deserved his shot.

“I think he’s ready to go, not just because he’s here and he’s got the shirt on. The thing about Tyron is, I’m always impressed with the fighters that improve the disciplines that are not their core disciplines,” Coker pointed out. “We all know he came from wrestling, but look at his striking. It’s getting better. Look at his jiu-jitsu. It’s getting better. So that’s the thing I’m most impressed with…We’re going to give him an opportunity in the next couple months and then it’s going to be up to T-Wood at that point.”

That interview took place on April 9 and according to Woodley, who was named 2010 Rising Star of the Year by Strikeforce, he hasn’t heard where or whe he’ll be fighting next.

Make the call, Scott.
