Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was scheduled to rematch fellow former champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum at last Friday’s (Dec. 30, 2016) UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada, but he was pulled from the card after the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) refused to license him.

Leading up to the bout, Velasquez had made it clear that he was dealing with a back injury and that he had already scheduled a surgery for after the bout. After he told ESPN.com that he had trouble standing just days prior to the fight, however, the commission deemed it unsafe for him to compete.

That surgery that Velasquez had scheduled has now been completed, as his longtime head coach Javier Mendes recently told MMAFighting.com that it was successful and that the ex-champion could return to training next month:

“He had successful surgery on Wednesday,” Mendez said. “It was a minor surgery so he was walking right away. Only thing he has to do is wait until the incision heals before he can start working out. (It’ll take) about one month or less for the cut to heal.”

Velasquez last competed at July 9, 2016’s UFC 200, steamrolling through Travis Browne in the first round of their main card bout. His bout with Werdum was thought to be considered a title eliminator bout, so it should be interesting to see who the promotion schedules Velasquez against upon his return.

Stay tuned.

Fabricio Werdum Comments On UFC 207 Debacle: I’ll Fight Anyone

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum was scheduled to rematch fellow former champion Cain Velasquez at next Friday’s (Dec. 30, 2016) UFC 207, but Velasquez was unfortunately pulled from the bout yesterday (Dec. 24, 2016) after he failed to be licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) due to medical reasons.

Earlier today (Dec. 25, 2016), it was reported that Werdum would also be removed from the card, but the Brazilian has since told MMAFighting.com that he’s willing to fight anyone:

“We’re waiting. I’m on standby. If the UFC calls me, I’ll fight. I’m ready to fight,” Werdum said. “If the UFC says they have an opponent, I’ll fight. I’ll fight anyone, like I always did. I always fought the best. My record shows that. If I were afraid of anyone, I wouldn’t be in this sport.”

Both Junior Dos Santos and Stefan Struve, who are set to fight each other in Halifax on Feb. 19, offered to replace Velasquez and JDS even said that Werdum had turned down the bout with him, but “Vai Cavalo” said that isn’t the case.

Werdum said that he would fight Dos Santos again and even went as far as to take a shot at “Cigano’s” sexuality:

“What ‘Cigano’ said was a bit weird,” Werdum said. “‘Cigano’ has been chasing me for a long time. You usually go after the belt, not a fighter. I think that’s weird. I wasn’t offered this (fight). He’s saying I turned it down. I’d fight him just to end this story of him chasing me.”

“Some people think he’s jealous because I became champion beating his ‘dad’ Cain Velasquez, but I don’t think that’s the case,” he continued. “I think he didn’t come out of the closet yet. I don’t have anything against homosexuals, but ‘Cigano’ needs to get out of the closet. He must have something because he won’t forget me. I already told him I’m married. Nothing against gays, but everyone does their own thing.”

Werdum and Dos Santos first met in 2007 when “Cigano” knocked him out with a brutal uppercut, but Werdum said that he has since evolved more, a statement he’s willing to prove:

“He said something yesterday, he said I’m not a good fighter. I’ll show him inside the Octagon,” Werdum said. “Put us both in there now, no problem. He thinks I’m that same Werdum from 2007. Look at both of us and see who evolved more. My game changed completely.”

“I want to fight Friday. It’s hard because of the strategy, to prepare for someone on days’ notice. I’ve been thinking about Cain Velasquez for three or four months, training for him, but I’ll fight anyone. Just give me a fight.”

In a recent interview, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez appeared confident that he would be cleared by a doctor to fight at next week’s (Dec. 30, 2016) UFC 207 from Las Vegas despite the fact that he’s been dealing with a back injury throughout training camp.

However, a rumor surfaced earlier today (Dec. 24, 2016) indicating that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has ruled him out of his scheduled rematch with ex-champion Fabricio Werdum.

Velasquez, however, hasn’t been made aware of this news and he even said that he was cleared by the doctor the UFC sent him to:

The American Kickboxing Academy product is coming off of an impressive victory over Travis Browne last July and was likely going to be fighting for another title shot against Werdum next week.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is scheduled to rematch fellow former champion Fabricio Werdum at next Friday’s (Dec. 30, 2016) UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada. In a recent interview with ESPN.com, however, Velasquez detailed a back injury that he’s been dealing with, which has forced him to use Cannabidiol throughout training camp, as well as to schedule a surgery a few days after UFC 207.

After this interview went public, speculation begin to run rampant and rumors began to swirl indicating that Velasquez was off of UFC 207. However, the ex-champion recently confirmed to MMAFighting.com that he is indeed fighting next week:

“I am,” he said “I’m fighting at UFC 207 against Fabricio Werdum. I’m in shape, I’m ready to go.”

“Obviously, with the past interview that I did about what’s going on with my body and everything else, somebody just thew out something that was bogus on social media, and you know how that is, everybody has a voice now. It wasn’t true. I am ready to fight. I’m ready to win.”

Velasquez does, however, need to receive more clearance from a doctor, which was a request made by the UFC, but he is not worried at all:

“I’m doing that tomorrow,” he said. “He’s going to look me over and give me the green light and then call the UFC and do the same there. Yeah, it’s going to be an easy process, definitely. I’ve been working out now for two months, doing everything: wrestling, sparring … I’ve been throwing out stuff on social media to show that I am ready. You know, me hitting mitts, that was yesterday.”

Obviously with Velasquez mentioning this situation before the fight he has received a bit of criticism, as some feel as if he will have an excuse if things don’t go his way on fight night, but the former champion assures that’s not the case. In fact, he’s determined to get ‘revenge’ on Werdum, who submitted him in June 2015 to steal the title:

“I never throw out excuses, regardless of what’s been going on,” Velasquez noted. “People will see on the 30th. I’m confident in what I have and what I can bring to the table. I know what Fabricio’s about, he likes to throw these little jabs outside of the ring, but it’s all good, man. We get to do it in the cage. Regardless of who it was, I would fight. It’s not just Werdum, but I definitely want to win this fight. With him beating me last time, I want to get that revenge, and I will. That will happen.”

What do you make of this situation and who do you expect to come out on top when these two meet?

Stipe Miocic Eyeing March Return, Possibly In London

Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic recently defended his title for the very first time at Sep. 10’s UFC 203 from his home of Cleveland, Ohio, impressively stopping Alistair Overeem in the first round of their main event bout. After already competing three times in 2016, however, the champion was interested in taking time off.

Recently speaking with Independent.co.uk, Miocic said that he’s eying a return in March, a month where the UFC is reportedly looking to return to London, a possibility that the heavyweight king is open to:

“I’m hoping to return in March,” Miocic said. “Sometime early on in 2017 or maybe early Spring. I hate flying and I hate traveling, but if they want me to fight in the UK then I’d love to the fight in the UK.”

Prior to beating Overeem, Miocic had put together a three fight win streak that included consecutive finishes over the likes of Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski and Fabricio Werdum. As far as what lies ahead for him, it’s likely that he’ll take on the winner of UFC 207’s rematch between former champions Werdum and Cain Velasquez.

Those two men first did battle at June 2015’s UFC 188 where Werdum battered Velasquez to walk away with the heavyweight title. Miocic, however, then knocked out the Brazilian last May to steal the strap.

Who would you rather see Miocic make his next defense against?

Earlier this week, we reported that former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was interested in a rematch with the man who took the belt from him at June 2015’s UFC 188, Fabricio Werdum. Velasquez appeared to be the leading option for the next shot at current titleholder Stipe Miocic, but it appears as if the Mexican American isn’t willing to wait for Miocic, who’d like to take some time off after fighting three times over the last nine months.

Now just days later and it seems as if the bout is all but confirmed. According to a report from MMAJunkie, which was later confirmed by MMAFighting, both Velasquez and Werdum have agreed to rematch at December 30, 2016’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

After being submitted by “Vai Cavalo” in Mexico City, Velasquez took some time off, but bounced back at July 9’s UFC 200 by steamrolling through Travis Browne in the first round of their main card bout.

Werdum also got back into the win column against Browne at last weekend’s (September 10, 2016) UFC 203 via unanimous decision. Prior to that bout, the Brazilian surrendered his strap in brutal fashion to Miocic last May.

The winner of this potential bout between Velasquez and Werdum will likely receive the next shot at gold.
