Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has praised the fight promotion for the safety measures they put in place during UFC 249 fight week.
Werdum fought on the night’s preliminary card for the first time after serving a two-year drugs ban. The Brazilian submission specialist struggled against Alexei Oleynik and ultimately fell to a split decision defeat at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida this past weekend.
In the lead up to the event, Werdum found himself in the midst of a health and safety nightmare. His compatriot and friend Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza tested positive for COVID-19 and his fight against Uriah Hall was scrapped from the card after both fighters had already weighed in.
While social distancing procedures were supposed to be in place at the fighters hotel during the lead up to the event, Werdum and ‘Jacare’ were seen interacting in close proximity to one another before the middleweights positive test result. This caused concern among some media and fans that Wedrum and other fighters on the card could have become infected prior to the event.
Fabricio Werdum Praises “Very Careful” UFC For COVID-19 Protocols
Speaking to MMA fighting the former heavyweight king had nothing but good things to say about the UFC and how they dealt with the most unusual of fight weeks.
“The UFC was very careful,” Werdum said. “The UFC was really well prepared for this event. It’s impressive. They were checking our temperature every day, I had to do several exams. I got tested for coronavirus three times since I got there.”
Werdum also took the time out to defend his friend ‘Jacare’ for still travelling to the event despite knowing he had been exposed to the virus through a family member, he said.
“‘Jacare’ is a friend of mine for many years, I really like him. I was sad for him. I texted him and he said he was very upset too because the prejudice is hard. There’s always someone to talk crap. It pisses me off because some people have no respect.
“You think ‘Jacare’ said, ‘Oh, I wanna have the coronavirus’? No, no one wants to have it. No one wants to catch this sh*t and pass it on to their families. Nobody. But it happens. People talk crap, but thank God the UFC is assisting him and he will be alright. He won’t have the strong symptoms because he’s always well-prepared and that helps.”
Does Fabrico Werdum praising the UFC COVID-19 safety measures make you feel better about events continuing to take place?

New video footage has emerged showing Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza interacting with other fighters before he tested positive for COVID-19.
On Friday night it was revealed ‘Jacare’ has tested positive for coronavirus and his middleweight fight against Uriah Hall has been removed from tonight’s UFC 249 card. Two of the Brazilians cornermen also tested positive for the virus.
According to reports, the card will still go ahead in Jacksonville, Florida later this evening. The states commission is satisfied all has been done to isolate Souza and no further cases will be reported.
The UFC said in a statement that ‘Jacare’ and his team have been in isolation since arriving at the fighters hotel earlier this week, it read. “From their arrival earlier in the week until their departure today, Souza and his cornermen followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible.”
A video clip posted to the social media of UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum seems to contradict what the UFC statement claims. ‘Jacare’ is seen interacting with his compatriot and in close quarters with a bunch of other people – check it out below.
Do you think UFC 249 should still go ahead after ‘Jacare’ Souza’s positive coronavirus test?

UFC heavyweight contender Aleksei Oleinik has a good reason for competing during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — he is in debt.
Oleinik welcomes former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum back inside the Octagon when they clash at UFC 249 on Saturday. And it is good timing as well for “The Boa Constrictor” as he revealed in a recent Instagram Live session that he is running low on money due to the current global situation.
“In two or three months, I would have become very nervous,” Oleinik told MatchTV (via Bloody Elbow). “I don’t have money now. I already borrowed 15-17 thousand dollars. Therefore, if there were no fights, it would be problematic.”
Unlike the PFL, the UFC isn’t offering its fighters a stipend though it must be noted that some were paid for the recently-canceled UFC London event in March. Instead, it appears the only way for these fighters to make money is by competing.
It’s fair to say that many competing at UFC 249 are doing so for the paycheck more than anything else. However, not everyone appears to be in the financial situation that Oleinik finds himself in.
“If you lose [your fight], then you have enough money for 4-5 months of life, and if you win, for 8-10 [months],” he added.
In the end, the Russian seemingly has no choice but to compete.
