After Virtual Fight, Emelianenko and Couture Discuss Uncertain Futures

LOS ANGELES – Fedor Emelianenko may hail from a small town in Russia that most Americans couldn’t find with a map and a magnifying glass, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have Xbox in Stary Oskol.

They do. And, as it turns out, one of them is located in Emelianenko’s house, or so he told MMA Fighting via an interpreter after showing off his video game skills at Universal City Walk on Tuesday afternoon.

“I play a little bit,” said Emelianenko, who described the feeling of seeing himself pummeling people in video game form as “fun.”

This information might have been useful to former UFC champion Randy Couture, who took on Emelianenko in a head-to-head match-up of the new EA Sports MMA video game that hit stores today. It was a spirited battle, but in the end the Russian, playing as himself, handed Couture a brutal TKO loss.

With just one fight remaining on his current Strikeforce contract, Fedor Emelianenko’s future with the California-based promotion could be decided this week, according to the Russian heavyweight’s manager Vadim Finkelchtein.

In an interview with MMAJunkie, Finkelchtein revealed that they are primarily negotiating with Showtime as they want to include in Fedor’s contract a deal to co-promote Emelianko’s fights with his M-1 Global corporation and Strikeforce’s broadcast partner.

Does this strike anyone else as being a bit odd? Can you see Ed Soares sitting down with Spike TV to iron out the details of an Anderson Silva contract extension?

I’m actually starting to feel bad for Scott Coker. It’s becoming clear that the patients are running the asylum.

New Deal for Fedor Could Be In Place Today

All of Fedor Emelianenko’s glorious accomplishments aside (which includes providing many, many, effin entertaining moments), it seems like the words ‘future’ and ‘could be’ far too often accompany the heavyweight’s name. Basically (and we will assume 90% of MMA fans are included in this) we just want to see the dude fight and fight often, but once again, following his loss to Fabricio Werdum this past summer, months will go by before that happens.

So what’s the latest word on “The Last Emperor’s” seemingly endless contractual and or bout negotiations? Well, according to a report from MMA Junkie today, M-1 Global could be close to inking a new deal which would mean that Fedor would remain with Strikeforce for the foreseeable future. The ‘crown jewel’ of the agreement, if it happens, M-1 Global would see some of its cards broadcast on Showtime. See—no wonder the UFC and Fedor’s management never came to an agreement. M-1 Global President Vadim Finkelchtein was quoted saying in the story:

“We have an agreement in place, and that agreement has one more fight on it. If we have to operate under that agreement; that’s perfectly fine. But if we have the opportunity to make the relationship more long term, than certainly we’re open to that as well. So we feel fine about that in terms of Fedor’s career because we know at some point very soon, he’s going to have a fight.”

So, long story short, Fedor will fight “soon”, which based off previous negotiations, could mean what? 5-6 months from now? Won’t Werdum be back by then?

Alistair Overeem to Fedor: Don’t Blame Me. Blame Your Management Team.

In response to recent stirrings that Fedor Emelianenko has called out Strikeforce Heavyweight Titleholder, Alistair Overeem for allegedly choosing to challenge in K-1 rather than face him, Overeem takes into consideration that Fedor’s management, M-1 might be speaking for him and suggests that Fedor should maybe get a reality check.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem

In response to recent stirrings that Fedor Emelianenko has called out Strikeforce Heavyweight Titleholder, Alistair Overeem for allegedly choosing to challenge in K-1 rather than face him, Overeem takes into consideration that Fedor’s management, M-1 might be speaking for him and suggests that Fedor should maybe get a reality check.

There was a lot of discussion if this was really Fedor saying that because people where telling that Fedor would never give a reaction like that. I know for a fact that M-1 does most of the talking when Fedor is interviewed in writing so I’m not surprised if M-1 gave this answer. On the other hand it could also be that Fedor made these comments but was not well informed by M-1 about the negotiation with Strikeforce and myself. M-1 is doing a great job of keeping Fedor away of the true reality about what is going on. If Fedor reads the internet especially in the US then he will be shocked how many bad things have been said about him and especially M-1. They singlehandedly destroyed the legacy Fedor had with all their weird demands and strange comments during the year. So I hope Fedor read[s] this and [it] will tell him exactly what happened.

Overeem continues by telling Emelianenko not to blame him but to blame his management team, M-1 for continually holding up negotiations with Strikeforce and says he was not going to wait around for him. Overeem says he committed to K-1 before Fedor ever called him out. Now Overeem is in the Top 8 position in the K-1 Grand Prix 2010 and should be tied up with the organization until early 2011. After K-1, he is expected to face either Emelianenko or the rightful Strikeforce Heavyweight contender, Fabricio Werdum who should be recovered from his elbow injury by that time.

(If you fire Jerry Millen, I’ll get rid of Gus Johnson. Shake on it.)

According to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, in 2011 the promotion will match each of its top heavyweight fighters up against each other and not just tease the fans by mentioning the prospect of said matches.

During an appearance on Sherdog’s Beatdown Radio Show on Wednesday Coker said his organization is planning on going all-in next year and aren’t going to hold anything back to protect certain future fights.

“One thing I can tell you is all these guys … Alistair, Fedor, Fabricio, Josh Barnett, [Antonio] ‘Bigfoot’ [Silva], [Sergei] Kharitonov, Andrei Arlovski, Brett Rogers — all those guys are all going to fight each other in 2011,” Coker said. “We’re not going to hold anything back. You’re going to see these guys fight the toughest guys because really, if you’re a heavyweight, there are no easy fights in Strikeforce. It’s arguably the best heavyweight division in the world, and I think Josh Barnett said it best. The competition is here. He signed with us because he wants to fight all those guys. We’re going to put those fights together, and I think the fans are going to love it.”
