UFC strawweight Felice Herrig is calling it quits after eight years of competing in the UFC Octagon.

Herrig lost to former strawweight title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz on the UFC Vegas 56 prelims. She lost via second-round submission after Kowalkiewicz got her back and sunk in the rear-naked choke.

After dropping her gloves in the center of the cage, Herrig officially announced her retirement during her post-fight Octagon interview with Paul Felder.

Herrig had rejected the idea that she was in a ‘do or die’ scenario ahead of UFC Vegas 56. yet, after a fourth straight loss, the 37-year-old decided to call it a career.

Herrig earned a shot in the UFC following a successful run on The Ultimate Fighter 20. Despite a loss to Randa Markos that eliminated her from season title contention, she earned a win over Lisa Ellis at the finale to secure a spot in the promotion.

Herrig would go on to lose against Paige VanZant, before winning four in a row over the likes of Alexa Grasso and Cortney Casey. Her streak would come to an end after a split-decision loss to Kowalkiewicz in their first matchup at UFC 223.

Before her time in the UFC, she enjoyed brief stints in Bellator and XFC. She made her professional MMA debut at Ultimate Warrior Challenge 5 back in 2009.

Herrig concludes her professional career with a 14-10 record in the cage.

Felice Herrig is returning from a long layoff but is not feeling the pressure.

It has been nearly two years since UFC strawweight Felice Herrig last fought in the Octagon. She has been dealing with injuries and recovery but is finally ready to get back in action. She will be taking on Karolina Kowalkiewicz at tonight’s UFC Vegas 56.

The road back to health and athleticism has not been an easy trip for Herrig. She sat down recently with Kevin Iole from Yahoo Sports to discuss her comeback.

“I tore my ACL and meniscus,” she explained. “It’s not like you can kind of train a little, you can’t like train at all and then feeling like it’s never getting better. Like, you’re doing everything, you’re supposed to be progressing. I felt like, every time I would progress, then I would take like 10 steps back because it will get worse. So that’s mentally hard. They say that it’s not if you can physically overcome an ACL surgery, it’s if you can mentally override ACL surgery.”

Her last three fights all ended in losses, however, the four before that were all wins. The beginning of her recent slump was a bout against Kowalkiewicz and now she will be looking to turn it back around against the same opponent. The ups and downs are part of the game and Herrig knows this. After her last loss, she recalled hearing hater calling for her retirement, but Herrig is not ready for that yet. She is coming into this next bout without feeling that pressure.

“But I don’t have that desperation anymore,” she explained. “Like, I have to win, I have to win. No, if I get cut from the UFC I get cut from the UFC. I’m also a great boxer, you know, I can go, I could still fight if I wanted to, you know, other promotions would be willing to take me on, if that’s what I chose to do. But I feel like everything comes down to my performance. If I perform the way I have been performing in training, I will win this fight.”

Do you think Felice Herrig can get back in the win column at UFC Vegas 56?

Rising UFC Women’s Strawweight contender Paige VanZant recently appeared on “The MMA Hour” at MMAFighting.com to discuss her upcoming UFC On FOX 15 bout with Felice Herrig.

“I always had on the back of my mind that me and Felice would fight, because we’re the hot girls in the sport,” said VanZant. “So I kind of got myself ready for that.”

VanZant, who is one of a handful of Women’s MMA fighters who uses her sexuality to her advantage when it comes to marketing also spoke about how she looks up to Herrig.

“She’s been around for a long time, and she’s been somewhat of a veteran in the sport,” said VanZant. “Just to be fighting her, and to be at her level in as honor. I looked up to her when I first started the sport. She was someone who I wanted to follow in her footsteps.”

VanZant concluded, “Now to be on the same playing field and the same level as her, it’s exciting. I’m really excited about this fight.”

Strawweight contender Felice Herrig (14-8) has detailed how she was forced to utilize her fighting abilities outside of the cage last month.

The 35-year-old was allegedly punched by a drunk woman in Las Vegas after attending UFC 246 in the T-Mobile Arena. According to Herrig the altercation began after the other lady stopped traffic to pick up a penny, the UFC fighter made a comment and things began to spiral out of control. Ultimately Herrig was left with a bloodied nose. She has now explained exactly how everything went down whilst speaking with MMA Junkie, she said.

“Yeah,
that was really weird. That was the start of my Vegas journey, and it wasn’t my
fault. I feel like people in Vegas are crazy. …

“She
stopped traffic to pick up a penny! Literally a penny. And I called her out on
it.”

After
making her remark Herrig walked on thinking nothing more of the incident. However,
after a while she noticed the same woman was following behind her.

“Three
minutes later, there’s somebody behind me saying, like, ‘The penny was on
heads!’ And I’m like, ‘I do not give a sh*t.’”

This
only seemed to rile the woman more who was persistently getting in the UFC
fighters face shouting. “What are you gonna do about it?”

“And I’m
like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything about it unless you do something about it
first,’” Herrig said. “If you punch me, I will defend myself. And she punched
me. And I had to defend myself, so I punched her back really hard.”

A brief scuffle ensued, and the woman ran away according to Herrig’s version of events. The bloody nose she was pictured with on Instagram, was actually a result of an accidental headbutt during the scuffle rather than the woman’s punch.

However, Herrig got into an altercation with another woman after the event which resulted in her getting punched.

Herrig detailed the incident in an Instagram post along with a photo of her bloody nose:

“Vegas sucks!!! Some chick got mad at me for giving her sh*t over stopping traffic over a penny. She then proceeded to punch me in the face. I punched her back but didn’t want to be too violent because I was protecting my knee and hair. She ran off like a little b*tch. The END. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

As for her fighting career, Herrig is currently recovering from a torn ACL which ruled her out of her fight against Xiaonan Yan in the summer.

The 35-year-old is currently on a two-fight losing skid following losses to Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Michelle Waterson.
