FORT HOOD, Texas – Great comeback stories in sports are so common they’re a threat to become a cliche. Such might be the case with Melvin Guillard – if he was less believable in his desire to become one of those great comebacks.

Guillard continued on that path Saturday night with a convincing win over Evan Dunham in the main event of the UFC’s Fight for the Troops 2 card at Fort Hood. Dunham’s only loss before Guillard rolled through him came against Sean Sherk at UFC 119 – and that was a fight even UFC president Dana White said he was ignoring because of controversial judging.

But Guillard gave Dunham – and his boss – something to think about besides Dunham’s record with a barrage of knees that won the fight in the first round. The win was Guillard’s fourth straight and seventh in his last eight fights. He said it’s just the beginning.

“I’m going to make my run,” Guilard said, echoing comments he’s been making for weeks leading into the Dunham fight. “This is my dream. I have a legacy, and at the end of the day I have a great story to tell some day when I’m an old man. That’s part of my legacy to fulfill, and I will get that belt.”

FORT HOOD, Texas – In the grand scheme of things, it’s just a sport, just one night of entertainment.

But the UFC’s second “Fight for the Troops” show on Saturday meant a night away from the stresses of military service – stresses most will never understand. About 3,200 troops attended the show, which was set up in a temporary arena inside a hangar on an air strip – tanks and helicopters just a couple hundred feet away from the Octagon.

The troops posed for pictures with Chuck Liddell and Bruce Buffer and Dana White and the Octagon Girls and Stitch and every fighter walking past – and most stopped to shake hands, sign autographs and get a snapshot, win or lose. They ate burritos at a tailgate outside the hangar. They cheered and booed the same as they would if they were in any other arena.

Tim HagueFORT HOOD, Texas – Tim Hague is back in the UFC. Again.

And this time, he plans on sticking around a while.

The Canadian heavyweight went 1-2 in his first two stints with the promotion, winning his debut against fellow UFC Fight for the Troops 2 fighter Pat Barry at UFC 98. He was the victim of Todd Duffee’s record 7-second knockout at UFC 102 – which Hague says was merely a “freak of nature” occurrence. And a loss to Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 109 sent him packing.
