Well, it looks as if we are one step closer towards seeing Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor meet inside the squared circle.

After months and months of back-and-forth negotiations and rampant speculation, UFC President announced late last night (May 17, 2017) that he had indeed reached a deal with his lightweight champion. White then said that he would begin working on a deal with Team Mayweather:

“The McGregor side is done,” White said on TNT following game one of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. “I’m starting to work on the Mayweather side now.”

“I’m not saying the fight will happen but I got one side done and it’s time to work on the other,” White added.

McGregor also confirmed the news, revealing in an exclusive interview with TheMacLife.com that he had signed a contract in order to make his bout with “Money” a reality:

“It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management,” McGregor said.

“The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.”

Over the last year or so, White and McGregor have often seemed to be on different pages regarding the potential mega fight, but for the first time, the two have come to an agreement, which is a major step towards making this fight official.

Mayweather hasn’t fought since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in Sept. 2015. McGregor, on the other hand, has been out of action since knocking out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 last November in New York City.

Dana White Says He ‘Can’t Keep Messing’ With McGregor vs. Mayweather

UFC President Dana White isn’t closing the door on a potential boxing fight between Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, but he does know that both sides need to start moving forward with negotiations.

Recently speaking on the topic, White said that he hopes to have a deal done with McGregor on Sunday before beginning negotiations with Team Mayweather on Monday:

“I plan on having this thing locked up by this Sunday and then moving on to Team Mayweather and start to negotiate with them,” White told “The Jim Rome Show” on CBS Sports Radio. “If we really do get it done in that timeframe, then this thing could possibly happen. Again, I still have to go negotiate with them. There’s no guarantee that we’re going to come to a deal.”

“I think (the chances of a deal with McGregor) are pretty good,” White said. “Hopefully Monday I’m going to sit down and negotiate with Team Mayweather. I just can’t keep messing with this thing. I have to run my business and I have to focus on all the other things that are going on around here.”

White attended a boxing fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada last weekend. After the fight, which “Canelo” won by unanimous decision, it was announced that “Canelo” would be taking on middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin on Sept. 16, 2017.

White said that he was hoping to have McGregor fight Mayweather on this date, but admits they ‘should have moved faster’ with negotiations:

“That was the date we were shooting for,” White said. “I was doing an interview earlier and they said, ‘Well the MGM says you hadn’t held the date.’ We hadn’t – we hadn’t held the date. But that’s the date we were shooting for. … I didn’t see any big fights coming up that we couldn’t have took the date from if they ended up with that date.

“Then they come up with Canelo and ‘GGG,’ which is a real fight. That’s a fight I’ll actually buy tickets for and go to myself. So, yeah, life waits for nobody. We should have moved faster, we should have moved further along in the negotiations, and it’s our own fault.”

Do you still have hope that Mayweather and McGregor will meet in the squared circle?

Anything can happen in a fight and Floyd Mayweather is well aware of that.

The former multi-division champion has remained in retirement since winning a decision against Andre Berto in Sept. 2015, but it’s quite possible that he returns to the squared circle later this year for an unprecedented super fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Many have given the “Notorious” one no chance of competing with an all-time great like Mayweather in a boxing match, but “Money” doesn’t quite share the same sentiment.

Recently speaking with TMZ, Mayweather admitted that ‘anything can happen’ in a bout with a ‘heavy hitter’ like McGregor:

“I’m not gonna sit right here and knock Conor McGregor. He’s gone out there and done what he’s had to do. It’s obvious he’s done something right thus far to get to the point where he’s at. I’ve been off for a couple years and I’m 40 years old now. So, I’m a lot older and he’s still in his 20s and I’m in my 40s now. So that could play a major key, we don’t know. And he’s a heavy hitter. Every time he goes out there and defeats fighters, he’s standing up. He’s in a boxing position and he’s beating fighters. Does he have a good chance of upsetting Floyd Mayweather? I can’t say, but anything can happen in the sport of boxing.”

Do you agree with Mayweather, or would he completely outclass McGregor in a boxing match?

Boxing Champ: Diaz Would Beat Conor’s A** In Boxing

Many in the boxing community have given Conor McGregor no chance in a potential boxing match with former pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Former boxing light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver is no different. In fact, Tarver said that Nate Diaz, McGregor’s rival in the Octagon, would ‘beat his ass’ in a boxing match:

“Not a chance in hell,” Tarver said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Because Conor McGregor can’t beat the top-20 in the division, how the f*ck is he going to beat Floyd Mayweather? Not a f*cking chance in hell (of even a puncher’s chance), because he’s not punching with those four-ounce gloves on. He’s punching with 10-ounce gloves on. Big difference.

“It’s a money fight. I don’t know if it’s a mockery, but it’s a money fight. That’s what it’s all about. Conor McGregor can’t beat Nate Diaz in a boxing match. In a boxing match, [Diaz] will beat his ass, and there’s a whole lot of other fighters out there who will beat his ass in a boxing match.”

McGregor and Diaz have met twice in the Octagon, with Diaz submitting the Irishman at UFC 196 in March 2016 and McGregor scoring a majority decision victory over Diaz in their rematch at UFC 202 last August.

Tarver, however, doesn’t feel as if McGregor’s fighting skills or his power would transfer over to the squared circle. The former light heavyweight titleholder even said that Mayweather may be able to knock the “Notorious” one:

“I think Floyd can knock him out, because Floyd is a boxer,” Tarver said. “[McGregor] is not going to know what to do. He hasn’t had the repetitions. He hasn’t had the experiences. He don’t know what it’s going to take. Sh*t, he gets tired in a five-round fight, even though they’re going five rounds and they’re wrestling. What the hell you think is going to happen in round six, seven, if he gets that far? When he’s mentally fatigued and tired? Because I’ve seen him in the Octagon getting mentally fatigued and tired. So he just needs to be taught.”

Do you agree with Tarver’s comments?

Many have counted UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor out of a potential boxing super fight with the legendary Floyd Mayweather simply because the “Notorious” one has never competed in a professional boxing match.

UFC President Dana White, however, isn’t completely counting out his biggest star:

“At the end of the day it’s a fight,” White said (Via MMAJunkie.com). “Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old; Conor McGregor is 27. Conor’s a big dude. Floyd has trouble with southpaws; Conor McGregor is a southpaw. And Conor McGregor hits like a truck. When he hits you, you know it.

“So, in no way, shape or form am I saying Conor McGregor wins this fight. I don’t know. But it’s more interesting than people think it is. … I promise you Conor McGregor will hit him. When they fight (Mayweather) will get hit, and it will be interesting to see what happens.”

It’s still unclear whether or not the fight will actually occur, but it seems as if it inches closer and closer towards a reality each day.

McGregor hasn’t competed since last November when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 to become the promotion’s 155-pound titleholder. He recently announced that his next fight will be announced soon.

Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since Sep. 2015 when he scored a decision victory over Andre Berto. He then announced his retirement after the bout.

Would you give McGregor any chance of beating Mayweather?

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre is gearing up for his return to the Octagon, which is expected to take place later this year in the form of a middleweight title bout against 185-pound champion Michael Bisping.

Despite his upcoming fight, St. Pierre recently discussed the potential boxing match between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, which St. Pierre ‘doesn’t think’ McGregor will win:

“I think it will happen,” St-Pierre told RT Sports. “I know Floyd will never fight Conor in a mixed martial arts fight, but Conor could fight Floyd in a boxing match. I don’t think he’s going to win, I don’t think he’s going to win at all, but I think he wants to do it and he’s going to make a lot of money out of it.”

“Rush” isn’t the only mixed martial artist that has given the “Notorious” one a slim chance against “Money”, but unlike some other fighters, St. Pierre doesn’t think a loss against Mayweather will have a supremely negative affect on McGregor:

“If he loses, and I’m pretty sure he’s going to lose if it happens, the odds are not in his favor,” St-Pierre explained. “But if he manages to survive, it could be like a win for him. Because after he’s going to start talking, ‘Hey, I’ve stepped into your game, why don’t you step into mine?’ So it depends not only on the result, but how it’s done. It all depends on how things play out.”

Do you agree with St. Pierre’s comments?
