UFC President Dana White isn’t going to let a potential Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight hold up his promotion much longer.

During a Thursday appearance on the Jim Rome Show on CBS Sports (via Fox Sports’ Damon Martin), White said he’s placed a Sunday deadline on McGregor’s side of negotiations for arranging a boxing matchup with Mayweather.

White has tried to clear many hurdles in setting up the mega-showdown between McGregor and Mayweather. He told Fight Hub TV they “lost” their September 16 date when it was announced Canelo Alvarez will take on Gennady Golovkin on that Saturday.

During a Tuesday appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, White noted it’s been tough sledding trying to work out a deal for McGregor to challenge Mayweather.

“I’m not hinting that it’s getting close,” he said, per Fox Sports’ Nick Schwartz. “I knew this was going to be a nightmare to get done,” White said, “if it can even be done. We’ll find out. Obviously both guys want to fight each other, but you know, what’s the deal? Can the deal be done? That’s the question.”

McGregor and his girlfriend welcomed their first child on May 7. He hasn’t fought in the Octagon since last November when he defeated Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title and become the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history.

Dana White Doesn’t Care If Mayweather vs. McGregor Happens, Insists It Has To Be Right Deal

Just one month ago, UFC president Dana White came out and said that he was going to focus on making the super fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather happen. As for the reason, he wants to “do this for Conor” in consideration of the many times McGregor has stepped up to the plate and help out the promotion. However, as seen in the past, just because White says something, it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

The boss of the biggest MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) promotion in the world spoke with Colin Cowherd on Tuesday afternoon on The Herd to talk about various topics including the difficulties that exist in making the super fight happen. In his words, the fight is nowhere close to being set, and that eventually, he could wash his hands of everything.

“It’s not getting close at all (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). I knew that this thing was gonna be a nightmare to get done, if it can even be done. We’ll find out. Obviously, both guys want to fight each other, but what’s the deal? Can the deal be done? That’s the question.

“It’s not even Mayweather. It’s not even Mayweather. It’s definitely both sides. It’s not just Mayweather, it’s both sides of this thing are gonna be hard to get done. And absolutely, there’s gonna come a point where I’m done [clears his hands]. This isn’t what I do. This isn’t my business and I’m definitely gonna walk away.”

All of the things that go into making the fight of this scale are piling up and Mayweather has been a notoriously tough negotiator. Even with Mayweather’s insistence that he’s “the A-side” and the specifics of a purse split being hotly contested, the fight will still require a substantial amount of work. Putting that aside and topping all of that, the biggest current star in boxing, Canelo Alvarez, just announced a match against Gennady Golovkin for this September, which is a date that was being targeted for a potential Mayweather-McGregor bout. Obviously, that is a problem. Alvarez vs. Golovkin is the biggest boxing match in several years and basically ensures that McGregor-Mayweather won’t be fighting until the end of the year.

There are so many roadblocks still standing in the way of the fight being made. It’s fair to ask if White’s intention to “walk away” is coming sooner than predicted. However, White insists that he still wants to make the fight happen as a boon to McGregor. The UFC President also insists that “the right deal” must be struck. As to why it has to be the right deal, it’s pretty simple. It really doesn’t matter to him whether the fight happens or not.

“Listen, if it doesn’t work for me personally – either way, it doesn’t matter to me. I know that these two guys want to fight. I’ve said many times I respect Conor, and I’d like to do this fight for him, but it’s got to be the right deal. We have to get the right deal done, or it’s not going to happen, because, at the end of the day, this isn’t what I do, the UFC is what I do, and I should be focusing on that, and not a boxing match that – obviously, a lot of people want to see it, there’s a lot of interest in it, but it’s not really what I do.”

On a weekend devoid of fights from the UFC, perhaps the biggest news in the MMA world was Conor McGregor welcoming son Conor Jr. into the world with longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin.

News broke yesterday that Conor Jr. came into the world at 8 pounds, 14 ounces according to his grandfather Tony McGregor.

And today, we’ve got some pictures of the new baby and parents. McGregor, who has not fought since his UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight crown because of Devlin’s pregnancy, posted one of his sleeping son and Devlin on his official Instagram account first:

Dee and Junior are doing great everyone! Thank you for all the kind words, I am one proud and blessed Daddy ??

McGregor then posted one of himself holding his new son:

We can land the left paw from anywhere. Who wants it.

With his son now happily welcomed, McGregor can supposedly get back into the cage (or boxing ring) after taking the time off to not put stress on Devlin during her pregnancy.

But even with that major milestone now in the rearview, McGregor’s fighting future is anything but certain as he continues to seek a boxing megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., even if Dana White said they just lost their date last night and talks have significantly died down in recent days.

With Conor Jr. safe in his mother’s arms, maybe they’ll start to pick back up gain. Or maybe, just maybe, McGregor could finally just decide to defend a UFC title.

The biggest crossover fight in combat sports history has hit another snag.

After months of apparent negotiations and discussions, and the promotional tug of war and complications associated with something of its magnitude, Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor has lost its target date, at least according to UFC frontman Dana White

“We just lost our date to Canelo and [Gennady Golovkin],” he told Fight Hub TV (note: link and video below contain language NSFW). “But good. That’s a good fight. I’ll be at that one too.” White was in attendance for Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday and relayed this tidbit in real time upon learning of the Canelo-Golovkin booking.

Alvarez won a dominant unanimous decision, after which it was announced he would meet the man known as GGG on September 16.

White didn’t seem too ruffled at the prospect, complimenting both boxers and giving a brief analysis of the matchup. He also discussed the differences between boxing and MMA and paid respect to the sweet science and its influence on his career as a promoter.

For his part, McGregor has bigger things than Mayweather to focus on after recently welcoming a son into the world. He also previously said he wasn’t expecting to fight Money before the end of this year anyway.

Assuming we believe White, that September 16 was being targeted for Mayweather vs. McGregor, it raises the question: When will this unprecedented fight be rescheduled for? In the meantime, fight fans can look forward to the biggest actual boxing match the sport could put together finally getting booked.

Boxing had a big night on Saturday night as the much-anticipated super-fight between Canelo Alvarez, and Gennady Golovkin was officially announced following Canelo’s bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The bout is set to take place on September 16th, which apparently was a significant date for the UFC as well.

UFC President Dana White was in attendance for the boxing match this weekend and revealed in an interview that they initially planned to have the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather bout to happen at the same day.

“We just lost our date to Canelo and GGG, but that’s a good fight,” White told Fight Hub. “I’ll be at that one too!”

White, who has his roots from boxing, commented on being excited for the GGG vs. Canelo fight.

“Canelo looked good tonight. Canelo looked awesome. GGG is fun, man. He is the type of guy that boxing needs, so it will be a fun fight — and so is Canelo,” he said.

When asked for a prediction for the fight, White made it simple yet very clear.

“The fans. The fans win that fight. That’s going to be a real fight. That’s going to be a fun one.”

It should be noted that White recently stated that getting the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight isn’t an easy task. However, he vowed that he plans on doing everything he can to make it happen.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor announced he planned to take the beginning of 2017 off to welcome his first child into the world after winning the 155-pound title from Eddie Alvarez at November 2016’s UFC 205, and that has now become a reality.

McGregor and longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin reportedly welcomed baby boy Conor Jack McGregor Jr. to the world according to McGregor’s father father Tony in a report to The Irish Mirror:

“There’s great news for the McGregors and the Devlins. Baby Conor Jack McGregor was delivered last night at 8pm in the Coombe Hospital.

“He came in at 8 pounds 14 ounces. The whole family are absolutely delighted.”

It’s great news for the two respective families involved, but it could cause some headaches for future generations of the fight game if Conor Jr. is anything like his brash trash-talking father.

Now that “The Notorious” has become a father for the first time, the fight world may finally find out what his next move is as he continues to chase a lucrative boing match with Floyd Mayweather, a bout which talks about have cooled in recent weeks.

He’ll always have a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz, and basically the collective whole of three UFC divisions are angling to get a fight with the UFC’s biggest golden ticket. For now, however, McGregor will sit back and welcome his first born into the world.
