Stephen Thompson looked to pull off an upset and break Francis Ngannou’s world record punching power of over 129,000 units.

According to UFC president Dana White, Ngannou’s punching power is equal to 96 horsepower which is similar to getting hit by a Ford Escort going at its top speed.

Five years ago, ‘The Predator’ visited the UFC Performance Institute to see if he could break the record held by Tyrone Spong. He ended up having the hardest punch recorded in the world. It’s a world record that still stands today.

He just hits f**king unbelievably hard,” Joe Rogan said on his podcast in 2018. “His hands are so big. Every time I shake his hand I’m like, ‘How is that a person?’.”

Stephen Thompson Puts His Skills To The Test

On his YouTube channel, Stephen Thompson took on the challenge. After six attempts, ‘Wonderbody’ hit 58,006 units as his biggest score. He couldn’t achieve half of Ngannou’s punching record.

When it comes to fighting, Thompson (16-6, 1 NC) is scheduled to face Kevin Holland to headline UFC Orlando on Dec.3. The 39-year old is looking to bounce back from two straight losses.

Ngannou’s world record-hitting power has been on display throughout his MMA career. The Cameroon native has 12 knockouts on his record. He’s on a six-fight win streak with five coming by KO/TKO. His relationship with the UFC has been complicated since has been in a contract dispute for the past year.

The 36-year-old last fought at UFC 270 against Ciryl Gane in January. He was able to secure a unanimous decision victory against his former teammate and defend his title for the first time.

With a new contract, there is a chance that the heavyweight champion faces a returning Jon Jones in 2023.

Francis Ngannou reveals Jon Jones fight is likely next, reveals UFC ‘contract hasn’t been sorted’

Francis Ngannou

UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou revealed that his contract grievances with the UFC have not been worked out.

After knocking out Stipe Miocic to capture the heavyweight title at UFC 260, ‘The Predator’ engaged in a very public spat with his employer over what he felt were unfavorable conditions with his UFC contract. After nearly a year of back-and-forth between himself and Dana White in the media, Francis Ngannou returned to the Octagon, successfully defending his title for the first time against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270.

With Francis Ngannou undergoing knee surgery following the bout, many assumed it would give the UFC plenty of time to work out a new deal with the heavyweight king, especially as the promotion began to hype a potential clash between Ngannou and Jon Jones who has been working towards his heavyweight debut for the better part of three years. Unfortunately, it sounds like the UFC has done very little since January to work out the kinks with one of their biggest names.

In a recent interview on the ‘Joe Pomp Show‘ with Joe Pompliano, Francis Ngannou confirmed that Jon Jones would likely be the man to meet him in his return to the Octagon, but also revealed that his contract dispute with the promotion is still unresolved.

“Maybe Jon Jones, if we get things sorted out,” Ngannou said when asked about his highly-anticipated UFC return. “Because this contract situation hasn’t been sorted.”

Francis Ngannou Believes Current UFC Contracts Offer No Protection for the Fighter

‘The Predator’ aired his grievances with his current contract and once again shared a desire to fight for organizations outside of the UFC.

“The contract says you have to fight when they tell you you have to fight. But your contract does obligate them to give you a fight. They can sit you down for two years. You can’t say anything,” Ngannou said. “So unless they want to make you fight, you won’t fight. So that’s something that caught my attention. What is this contract good for? How this contract protect me, on what? Nothing. I have nothing.

“When you sign that contract, you give your ownership to the UFC. But technically, it’s not protecting you from nothing, from anything. They can cut you whenever they want, they can give you a fight, yes or no, and they don’t have to answer to anybody. They can do whatever they want. So why am I signing a contract? I have no protection in that contract.

“Unless you can guarantee me something in that contract, there’s not a reason to do a contract. Matter of fact, you say I’m an independent contractor. Let me fight, I can fight for you and fight for someone else. Why am I having exclusive contract with you with no benefit? I’m supposedly an independent contractor.”

With Jon Jones’ heavily rumored return at UFC 282 in December now dead in the water, an early 2023 return when Francis Ngannou is fully healed and ready to go makes sense. However, the UFC is going to have to pony up the dough if they want to bring fans what would undoubtedly be the biggest fight in UFC heavyweight history.

Zhang Weili

Former UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili is just days away from the opportunity to recapture UFC gold at UFC 281 on November 12th.

Weili will be the first to challenge new strawweight queen Carla Esparza after ‘Cookie Monster’ scored a split decision win over ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas in what many called the worst fight in UFC history. Nevertheless, Esparza earned the victory and began her second reign 2,612 after her first reign came to an end.

Deep into preparation for the highly anticipated UFC title fight, Zhang Weili put in some work at the gym alongside UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. In a clip posted on Ngannou’s Twitter, Weili is seen impressively picking up the 239-pound heavyweight with relative ease.

“I can’t believe that @zhangweilimma just picked me up like I wasn’t 293lbs. I didn’t want her to do it I was scared of her hurting her back and was trying to explain this to her….then found myself suddenly up in the air. Her strength ratio is through the roof.”

Zhang Weili Excited to Test Her Skills Against an Elite Wrestler Like Carla Esparza

Zhang Weili is known for her standup wars, specifically her 2020 Fight of the Year against former women’s champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and their subsequent rematch at UFC 275. At UFC 281, Weili will fight a woman whose success primarily comes on the ground rather than the feet. Riding a six-fight win streak, Esparza is notorious for getting her opponents to the ground and grinding out a win. That will be a unique test for Weili who has typically only fought other strikers.

“Because Joanna and Carla, they are different fighters… Joanna is a stand-up fighter, Carla is a wrestler, so our tactics will definitely have some changes,” said Weili in an appearance on the Fruiting Body Podcast. It’s my first time fighting a wrestler, I’ve never fought a wrestler before,” she concluded. “I’m very excited and I also want to test my wrestling and my controlling skills.”

While Esparza is known for wrestling her opponents into oblivion, Zhang Weili is a much different fighter. In 22 career wins, Weili has 11 victories by way of knockout and another seven via submission. If Weili can fend off the relentless takedowns of Esparza, she stands a good chance of catching ‘Cookie Monster’ who will have a significant disadvantage on the feet. If Esparza is able to implement her wrestling, it will be a very long night for Weili and the fans watching UFC 281.
